Monitor recommendations for laptop

I will soon be purchasing a new laptop and will need a monitor to complement it. Budget is $300 and it will primarily be used for work with light gaming


Specs of laptop are
Gigabyte Aero 15W v8-BK4 Ultra Portable Gaming Laptop - 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) 144Hz IPS Level LCD w/ nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 - Intel 8th Generation "Coffee Lake" Core i7-8750H - 512GB M.2 SATA SSD, upgradeable to 2x 2TB PCIe NVMe x4 SSD or 1x 2TB M.2 SATA + 1x 2TB PCIe NVMe x4 SSD - 16GB DDR4/2666MHz upgradeable to 32GB DDR4/2666MHz - Windows 10 standard

 

Here a few questions that will help narrow down some choices.

1. How good are your eyes and how far back from the monitor will you be sitting?
2. What kind of work are you performing on the monitor?
3. Is the room you're going to be using this in mostly walled or are there a lot of windows?
4. Will you be mounting it with a monitor arm or just using the stand?
5. Do you want it to be able to rotate and have height adjustment?

 

I think honestly... monitor choice is very personal. One thing you have to keep in mind: if you get lower refresh rate than your laptop, it might be very painful for you. There was a noticeable mouse lag on our cheap 60Hz screens compared to the gt75 (120Hz screen). It was so bad I in fact invested in a 144Hz screen to use aside my laptop and gave the cheap monitor to the bf who now rocks 2 of them and is extremely happy (cause when you have nothing to compare it to directly it's ok - but using 144Hz and 60Hz next to each other is imo really painful). Just something to keep in mind.

 

How much room do you have on your Desk to use the laptop would determine what size you want for the monitor. If work I just go with a 27" monitor that is small enough but not big enough since you only light gaming. I think anything bigger reaching 40"+ would require a Desktop Gaming Rig to get the full benefit of it back.

 

I totally can't find a 40 inch screen with 300 bucks budget haha. Also, a 1060 isnt enough to drive 4k for gaming imho, another thing to keep in mind. I agree that a nice 27 inch screen would probably be the best, or if supported by the laptop, 2x 24 inch screens for a nice dual setup (should be able to squeeze those in 300 dollars budget too).
As for brand: pretty much any bigger brand will be ok, just look at the reviews online.
If you use HDMI for your new screen: dont forget to open nvidia panel and set the colors to full range instead of limited to get proper blacks.
