I don't have a case. I did away with that long ago. To many problems with trying to go extreme in a case.

I would not either if they offered an open bench. I actually suggested that they add open bench "case" as a configuration option in the survey I took. I really like how my case looks, but it's already inconvenient, LOL.

Don't get me wrong... There are some very nice cases out there, but..... They just make things far more difficult when it comes to swapping parts on the fly. :D

Every time I buy something from NewEgg now I end up regretting it. They used to be really fast, like Amazon, but unless you waste money on their "Premier" crap their shipping is slower than a 10-year itch. I ordered SATA cables from them 5 days ago and I won't see them until Saturday. They dilly-dally around for several days before they process orders. They use DHL hybrid USPS crap shipping to save money and most of the time the tracking number doesn't even work until after the item is delivered. I should have spent an extra $5 to get the cables from Amazon and I would have had them in 24-48 hours, LOL. I don't mind paying for Prime because I get a lot of extra stuff with it, but you get almost nothing with NewEgg Premier... just added cost (annual fee to get "normal" shipping).

Oh, I know. You and I have talked about that several times. But, I have what I have and it's OK for now. It looks really nice, but it's a pain in the butt when I want to do something inside of it. I kept the side window off for several days for that very reason.

Mine is a baby tank. Just 60L, but the guys at AirGas always took care of me.

They were like....Awwww...look at the baby LN2 tank that really looked far better than theirs in the same class. LOL

The Big ones are 180L to 240L

I’m still rocking my 5960x on a custom water loop. It sits comfortable at 4.5ghz and I️ may try for more but most likely I’ll move to a different platform.

How do you like the 8700k so far? I think I'm going to hold out one more generation as my 5960x is doing well, but just curious.

Yeah so far it is more than decent. I'd like to hit 4.8 with the chip but I really don't want to pump that much voltage into it (With my custom loop, I won't have a problem with temps).

I'm thinking of my next build going "extreme" and trying chilled water. My biggest concern at that point will be keeping watch on condensation.

Well, I wish it was an i9-7960X or an i9-7980XE... that's what I wanted, but I can't complain. Comparing 6C/12T to 16C/32T or 18C36T, I really cannot complain. The 8700K is a sweet CPU for at 4 to 5 times less money. It's hard to think anything but great things about how it performs. Has to be the strongest hexacore CPU I have ever seen... pretty amazing.

For less than $400 compared to $1600 or $2000, what's not to love? It's too bad performance doesn't scale in direct proportion to price. Imagine if 7960X or 7980XE had physics scores that were 4 to 5 times higher, LOL. Wouldn't that be something?

Thats why im waiting for the EVGA X399 Dark, that one has proper VRM cooling, once the board is out i might get the 7980XE or the 7900X, probably the latter, since i dont need all those many cores anymore.

Yeah, for most, I say coffee is the way to go! It is the only one to buy unless you have a need. Intel's 7960X and 7980XE, although impressive, it's overpriced crap for most users. Wait until Ice lake when Intel pulls its head out of its butt and isn't releasing in reaction to AMD and has proper socket and power delivery systems (and real specs given to properly support high core count chips).

Hell, I pull over 400W alone on my 16 core when I pull all current and tdp limitations off this chip. Intel 16 core pulls even more unlocked on power. So this was a shock to manufacturers originally planning for less than that.

By waiting until the next gen, a lot more will be on the same page, you'll have better power, likely support for DDR5 (4266MHz or above with double bandwidth), better PCIe slots, etc. Waiting it out until 2019-2020 should be a LARGE jump, hopefully. As I said, coffee is best until ice, but after EUV gets here (tiger and Zen 3), we've got a new game as we won't be using quad patterning for the chips at that node.

    That WOULD be something!!

My hope is to switch over to the mainstream platform next year for Ice Lake and then have a large bruiser machine for tasks that use all those threads. I used to do this a few years about but consolidated for some strange reason.

Well, it looks like the Slow Shipping Posse at NewEgg has 8700K back in stock. Anyone that wants one should hurry before it's too late... unless supply problems are gone. But, it looks like the bass turds are price gouging for more than Intel's MSRP.

Intel Core i7-8700K Coffee Lake 6-Core 3.7 GHz (4.7 GHz Turbo) LGA 1151 (300 Series) 95W BX80684I78700K Desktop Processor Intel UHD Graphics 630

WOW - Micro Center is shafting people for $499 - ludicrous, LOL

Intel Core i7-8700K Coffee Lake 3.7 GHz LGA 1151 Boxed Processor

B&H Photo is also charging more than MSRP, but less than NewEgg. Of the three, B&H has the lowest price

    Intel Core i7-8700K 3.7 GHz 6-Core LGA 1151 Processor

    For the record...

Ice would be late 2018 to H1 2019. Just FYI. Intel has "taped in" those CPUs. AMD is taping out some 7nm this quarter. So, looking at the same time period. Now remember, with Ice, servers and HEDT likely will come first. AMD is also releasing their 7nm commercial GPU next summer (no reports of hard or paper release). Nvidia regularly announces and gets to specific partners commercial next-gen GPUs before doing the Titan or consumer cards. So we don't know if AMD will follow suit. Time will tell, same with the addition levels of AMD servers over the next year.

That is just legalese for guidance on where the numbers are and to defend retailers not following MSRP. Also, from that wording, it suggests retailers are paying that much per unit, so their margin is above that, which is ludicrous as that would make it the wholesale price! Just more horse hockey!

Yeah, don't bother, 4.8 or 4.7Ghz it doesn't make a difference, may as well stay at 4.7Ghz! Depending on what you do with your rig you likely won't need to switch out your CPU for the next 5 yrs or something ridiculous!

How are you liking the 1950X? Im currently debating between getting the 1950X / 7980XE / 7900X , kind leaning towards the latter since i can easily use my current 64GB CL14 3000Mhz kit (goes upto 3800Mhz CL16 with my 6850k) .. and more specifically the 7900X since it over clocks better and i really dont need more than 10 core anymore, but it never hurts to have the extra cores on the TR for almost the same cost.

It depends on your use. Does your software take advantage of more than 10C/20T? Is it for gaming? Will you keep the board if you upgrade to Zen 2 or 3? Does the majority of your programs rely on high speed, single or multithreaded (light) workloads? What cooling solution is being used? Etc. Price performance, the 1950X is a no brainer. But, best bang for the buck can be more complicated once considering specific use cases. It is best to sit down and write out how much you perform what tasks on the computer and which programs are used. This gives a breakdown of use cases by percent of time (include expanded uses or where you can now do more than one thing at a time in that analysis).

Then, look at the performance reviews of the two chips using the same or similar programs. After you have that breakdown, you can now quantitatively analyze which is best for you. I love my chip, but I also know you do some heavy cranking on stuff that I don't.

As to memory, I'm using my 4133 with it, but you'd be limited to the imc on TR, which is usually 3600. So...

Yeah I'll probably try for 4.6 as long as I don't have to pump much more vcore through it. I think I'm at 1.325v at 4.5GHz and max core temp is 68c at full tilt x264. I don't do avx2 stuff because I rarely use it.

Yeap, a lot actually. Rendering and 3D FX Simulations etc etc.

Yeap, DOTA2, CSGO, PubG, Overwatch. That about sums up my gaming. :p

If its upgrade-able , then hells yeah.

All the tools i use are Multithreaded. Only a few sub tools are benefit from higher single core clocks, but i can work around that to compile them at run time and have then run multithreaded.

Custom Waterloop , with QDC's and added ports at the back for a Chiller.

As for the memory till the time i can do 3600Mhz @ Cl14/Cl15 using my existing kit (it does 4200 CL16 on a skylake system) im more than happy. My workloads dont benefit too much from memory speeds.

Then it sounds like TR could do a world of good in your life. My 4133 that ran 3733@CL14 and 4000@CL16 could run 3600@CL14 until the most recent bios revision with AGESA 1.0.0.4, but that increased compatibility for 8x16GB setups! Since I could no longer get CL14 perfectly stable, I went to 3466@CL14 with tighter timings. Slight loss on read and slight increase in latency, but low effect on actual performance, comparatively (which I could just flash the last BIOS and have 3600@CL14 back up and running). So if you get a STRONG IMC on your chip, no problem. Not only that, SL has the top 5% using [email protected] or less (I got mine when they first went on sale for SL and am not disappointed, plus mine has a decent IMC with [email protected]).

The gaming is seriously not going to be overly effected with a strong GPU, so that really won't be much of a consideration between the two.

The multithreaded use is AWESOME! And, this socket is supposed to be upgrade-able to Zen 2 for sure, and potentially Zen 3. Considering how long it takes for DDR to go from commercial after listing to consumer, it really just matters the improvement of the IMC support on Zen 2, as DDR5 will be insane on pricing until 2020 or beyond (although still tempting).

Now, PCIe 4.0 is finalized, but I don't think many boards will drop with it until H1 of next year. If that isn't an issue for you, then hell ya! Also, a board just announced has TB3.0 on it instead of the USB3.1c port, so you may want to review what offerings are about to come down the chute! But it does sound like you could benefit from TR. SL top offering costs $1200 for top binned ($50 cheaper than when I bought mine, but from my testing, my chip would have been in that segment anyways; top 5% of TR chips according to post by SL on OCN; although they are clearing inventory on it as it didn't sell as well for TR).

Edit: I forgot to point out, there is no AVX offset, which means you could limit OC to deal with the heat from heavy AVX programs, if you use them. Also, AVX performance is less than Intel. Wanted to point that out for your analysis.

Will Dellienware's engineers with Gods blessing from AW’s Vice President Azor, have to remowe more legs from the TRIPOD heatsink for next refreshed AWBook? Same also for the XPS line as Azor is the Vice President for both DELL brand. All this will probably come due the BGA package now will increase in size. Less space on MB, will force changes  Yeah, maybe glue will be the next big hit or shall we say a must!!

With Skylake you're safe up to about 1.45V, but I think I did read that with some of the earlier generations you have to stop the voltage sooner (I'm at 1.4V on my Skylake). Before I bought this Skylake chip my understanding with CPU voltage was that you wanted to stay below about 1.3/1.35V.

Yep, I've heard of electromigration & how overclocking can accelerate this phenomenon, especially if using higher voltages & at higher temperatures. After the research I did on Skylake, I decided that 1.4V would be my personal maximum, but only if I could keep temperatures below 75 degC, and the good thing is that my CPU doesn't go over about 60 degC with liquid metal delid; it was the delid that prompted me to go from a 4.6Ghz @1.35V up to 4.7Ghz @1.4V. I'm quite sure the CPU will last years at this 24/7 setting, I hope to keep it maybe 5 yrs, but time will tell & I will of course post here if it dies! This is one of the main resources I used to decide on safe voltages: http://www.overclock.net/t/1570313/skylake-overclocking-guide-with-statistics

Cool, but how did Chew beat you at only 3.4Ghz when you're at 4.04Ghz? In fact on closer inspection, there doesn't seem to be much of a correlation between CPU frequency in that table & result. Hell, I don't even know if that's a CPU benchmark or not?!

First, if you are seeing the stock frequency, often it isn't what was run. Second, this is a cpu specific rendering bench. Third, try it for yourself and see what your chip does.

Edit: for example, look at Chew's bench in spot number 8 where he says 4GHz

Thanks for the answers, I was just asking, curious. Not gonna bother trying it though.

Great timing I should happen across this thread. People may have noticed I've been absent from the Laptop forums for a while. I've been struggling with management and a $4500 laptop for 4 core CPU. During this time away and some critical thinking, I've decided to not go down the laptop route, but instead work on what I'm now calling my 'portable' build. This is defined as something that can be moved from place to place, but not necessarily contain a built in keyboard and monitor... Think LanParty, but for my purposes no need for a high end GPU.

The plan is for a SFF case using a mini-ITX system board with an i7-7820X, 32GB (SO-DIMM DDR4 from 3000 to 3800MHz) RAM and two M.2 NVME SSDs. I don't really have a need to spend on graphics, so, this won't have much, but a regular sized 1060 GTX should suffice. Although the case I currently plan on using supports a small water-cooled system, I plan on using the info here for tweaking...

With that, all I can say is thank you for sharing!!

He also has a video showing the ek coverage compared to the XSPC block, which looks damn sexy in black chrome (that is the block I got). He hasn't yet tested the Watercool Heatkiller block yet, but there have been delays with it getting to market. He also hasn't gotten to the Swiftech, but I do know Chew uses the Swiftech block. But I would definitely not look at EK and am pretty sure they didn't redesign the fin coverage for their monoblock from a visual inspection, which is a shame! They may redesign before release, but if not, pass on it.

On MB, here is the one that may have TB3 in the future:

I love the backplate on that board! I'm rocking the Taichi. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but is a solid board, especially for overclocking, which is why I got it.

Yeah seems like they just changed the cold plate pretty much with minor changes to the top housing. Not really confidence inspiring.
Ill probably order stuff mid December, hopefully he gets to test the heatkiller by then.
