I wonder how much the new DDR5 ram affected/skewed the rumored Cinebench scores for 8+8cores Alder Lake vs. Ryzen 5950X. Alder Lake CPUs will offer a 19% IPC increase over Rocket Lake CPUs. And Alder lake have half of the cores as small lower clocked power efficient phone cores and without HT. Add 19% IPC on top of this Hybrid mess and I can't see how they should beat or come on par with 16 cores 5950X without some help from DDR5 in multi threaded load. Will this mean Alder lake will fail hard in multi threaded performance with the older DDR4? We will see maybe end of month.
Edit.
How can sub 10% IPC increase, 8 added low clocked phone cores without HT over Rocket lake beat 32 threads and 16 real cores? There has to be some magig baked into Intel's new Hybrid soup. Either with help from Microsoft or DDR5.

It has long been established to outpace Gear 1 in real world .exe's Gear 2 will need to scale much higher than DDR4 currently does (~5200) with much better CL than we have right now. It's fun to see big numbers in gear 2 mode for those stuck in Aida64World but Alder lake looks like a refined Rocket lake on the IMC front: DDR4-3600 standard with some IMCs able to push 3866 and a select few hitting 4000. It will be interesting to see what Alderlake does to take better (if any) advantage of Gear 2 than Rocket Lake.
Personally, I never found much improvement with higher memory frequency with CB23. A 19% uplift of IPC over Rocket Lake is pretty massive considering Rocket Lake was a ~13% uplift over CFL. That would be an overall substantial uplift over AMD 5000 series. Rocket lake ABT was already outclassing AMD PBO single thread performance in CB23. If that uplift for AL is valid....whoa.
If I give Alder lake a whirl down the line I will most likely go with a DDR4 motherboard and tight gear 1 with my B-die sticks. DDR5 just isn't ready to overtake DDR4 yet. If there isn't a decent DDR4 motherboard I would probably just wait unless real world results show even first phase DDR5 equals or beats DDR4. Only way I could see that would be with AL Gear 2 using some type of interleave type IMC interface to take full advantage of all the frequency/bandwidth Gear 2 has to offer.

I agree with this completely. I focus on architectural improvements and single core results then work my way out up to ~6-8 cores for a "real world" result table. Then I extend it to a much smaller segment of the market who can actually take advantage of more cores/threads in real world usage.
In the end, benchmarks are going to be run and results thrown up to see where they all land.Clamibot, Papusan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -

Thanks! The first thing I noticed was how snappy and responsive it feels compared to my Alien, like woah. I did not expect that at all.
The i5 10600K in my X170SM-G is worlds different in performance from the i7 4930MX in my Ranger. This thing is also suprisingly consumes less power while idle than my Ranger. I did not expect a battery life improvement either. I'll be installing a 10900K in my X170SM-G shortly.
The only thing I don't like about this laptop is the trackpad, but I don't really like trackpads anyway. I almost always use a mouse. I love everything else about this machine!
Now I'm encountering a very strange problem when using Intel XTU. Regardless of what version I install, the CPU Core Frequency is reported as -0.8 GHz. I have never seen this happen with an unlocked processor before, only locked ones. Does anyone know what causes this?electrosoft and Mr. Fox like this. -
The EVGA Z590 Dark Motherboard Review: For Extreme Enthusiasts anandtech.com | Oct 15, 2021
Testing overclocks manually from 4.7 GHz and beyond, we managed to achieve an all-core stable overclock of 5.2 GHz at 1.42 V on the CPU VCore. This was a little disappointing as we have been able to achieve 5.3 GHz all-core on this processor on other overclocking-focused models we've tested, so we know it can do better. We did notice very large levels of VDroop in our testing at both 5.1 and 5.2 GHz. From 4.7 GHz to 5.0 GHz, VDroop was relatively tight, however.
Overall we would have expected to achieve at least 5.3 GHz all-cores on the EVGA Z590 Dark, but it seems the real bread and butter of this board's performance will likely be unleashed with more extreme cooling methods.
Congrats bro

Just wish the 2080 Super was more compact for my P750FM, who knows maybe a 3070 will spring up in the wild.
Still doing ok with my recent acquisition though. Almost bit on a 3090 but the guy ended up being in El Paso instead of Ft Worth like his listing stated, 10 hour drive not something I am keen on. The red flag that had me walk away from it (figuratively speaking of course) was only willing to use cashapp and venmo or zelle. None of which have buyer protections. Oh well always next time! Passed through El Paso many times growing up but never been keen on the place, more of a lack of interest than any one particular thing. That all being said, yeah 10 hours is too much, Im ok with a full round trip in a day as I can just throw on some podcasts and leave the world behind me for a while but if i need a hotel then its a hard pass for me.
Ahh ok, maybe it was just a matter of chance that I happen to see non-LHR models locally under that particular model, hadnt considered that in the moment. -
If the price were low enough it would even be worth staying in a cheap hotel. But, it would be a long trip to find out when you got there that there is something about it that wasn't disclosed, like cosmetic blemishes or something. But, yeah, unless you are stationed at Fort Bliss and don't have a better option, El Paso (and other towns along the Southern border) is not the greatest places to be unless you're looking to participate in some questionable activities without having to look too hard to find trouble. There's not much to like about any of them. Especially now that the "stay in Mexico" order was replaced by the "door is open, let yourself in, steal whatever you want and bring COVID" invitation. I feel bad for the people that live there. I can imagine it would be similar to living next to a maximum security penitentiary that didn't actually have any kind of security measures in place.Last edited: Oct 16, 2021SierraFan07, Rage Set, Papusan and 1 other person like this.

I can't get my BCLK over 101.767. I'll set it as 102.00 in the BIOS, but as soon as I do 102.10, the BIOS freezes and I have to shut off the computer. I'm assuming this is because instability, but could it be my RAM?
I know I have good RAM, but it seems the top two CBR15 4710mq record holders use G.SKILL sticks instead of the Kingston ones like I have. The timings also seem a bit better on the G.SKILL stuff. -
Yep, could be the ram. Haswell mobile can be finky and you run mem above Intels specs. Maybe try reduce mem clock speed, reduce timings an put CR down from 2 to 1. Or just reduce mem clock and see if you get rid of the freezes (to confirm if its the ram sticks).
-
If memory serves me correctly and it is a CPU with a built in iGPU that is why. Unless something has changed, Intel locked out higher BCLK on those SKUs because going higher than that on BCLK causes issues with iGFX.Last edited: Oct 16, 2021

I am happy to see prices for 1200W+ PSU come down a bit. I want another high quality 1300W+ PSU, but I do not want to pay over 250 for it.
I ordered the only water block (Bykski) for my Asrock 6900 XT Formula OC from aliexpress, the cheapest price as instock US retailer prices were 190 to 200+, but I got it for 112 on aliexpress. It quoted me Nov 9th as the estimated date before I paid. After I paid, the shipping message stated 31 days which doesn't quite add up to Nov 9th
. That's better than the mirrorless camera (Canon R5) that is going on nearly two months from Russia. eBay claimed 35 days. I got to wait until Oct 21th (the day after my Bday) to start the Buyer's Protection process.
In other news, I have a 3080 TI and 3090 sitting. The 3080 TI I jumped on because I got it for a better than scalper price, it was impulsive and I kicked myself after it arrived. I was going to put it in my X99 build but I don't know right now. Todays Joke? @Ashtrix
Forced to use Win 11 and then you get this...
Intel's Alder Lake CPUs May Not Work With Older Games tomshardware.com
Intel recently shared a developer guide for its forthcoming 12th Generation Alder Lake processors. Gamer's Gospel discovered an interesting tidbit that DRM solutions, such as Denuvo will require updates to support Alder Lake's hybrid design.
It shouldn't be a huge issue for modern games since developers will in all likelihood provide the update for Alder Lake. The problem arises for older titles that are a couple of years old that likely won't get any updates, meaning they'll be unplayable on Alder Lake chips. There are many gems out there that have high replay value so gamers will be annoyed that they can't play them on the shiny, new Alder Lake processor that they just bought.Ashtrix, Rage Set, Clamibot and 1 other person like this. -
That is actually kind of funny because the only reason game devs use DRM is because gamers keep buying their trash that uses it. Gamers should have organized a massive boycott against all game devs and studios that use DRM filth years ago. (Not just the titles that use DRM, but a boycott against the devs and studos, all of their products, as punishment for their sins.) Now the gamers and the devs will both be screwed. If devs weren't acting like Nazis with the DRM virus crap then gamers wouldn't have to worry about it, and neither would the devs.
-
I think it may be RAM though because the other two guys got there BCLK to 102.05, which seems to be the limit for mobile haswell based systems.
Wouldn't it be impossible to get the BCLK high on any of the M/MQ chips as they have IGPU's? -
I'd have to check on my Tongfang turdbook (it is the only computer I own with iGFX) and I don't want to have to unpack it and turn it on to check. It's something like that number is the limit. If you try going higher the system won't even try to boot unless you clear NVRAM.

Yet another Ugly child from Dell. This time with a window so the boys and girls can see the RGB light show also inside the chassis.
Dell's new Alienware Aurora gets a striking visual overhaul along with substantial internal thermal redesign hothardware.com
According to Dell, this qualifies as an "open-air design," though that's using the term rather loosely. Regardless, the upshot of the redesign is that Dell says it managed to increase the internal chassis volume by 50 percent, while only expanding the overall footprint by a little bit.
There is at least one compromise that comes with all this. Dell says it built a custom (read: proprietary) motherboard with power connections placed towards the edge. This is to prevent any airflow obstructions, and it also negates the need for a daughter board to handle front I/O chores—each USB port has a direct lead in to the core architecture. It also means you won't be swapping out the mobo with an off-the-shelf alternative, if you ever wanted to upgrade the guts. Yet, they call it upgradeable

What kind of 3090 did you end up picking up?
Even though I I will never play Witcher 1 and 2 I still bought them to support CDProjectRed and their GoG store, I did eventually play Witcher 3 and I did enjoy it.
I would be careful, BCLK OCing is how I killed my daughterboard on the 17 R1.
I didnt know Dell was getting in on cookware, that thing looks like an air fryer.
Alienware motherboards look the same as their Precision 3640 systems which are super basic in my view. Their Precision 5820/7810/7820 etc etc are better but they still annoy the hell out of me for the weird limitations. -

Yes, that is definitely the issue. They're so obsessed with greed and worry about the lowest common denominators being able to play their games without paying for them that they end up penalizing everyone else with buggy crap. It is not an honorable way of running a business and I hope the Redmond Retards find it impossible to ever fix it and cannot make Windows 11 compatible with DRM. That would be a hilarious failure that ultimately serves justice and the greater good.
I don't care for Witcher titles or anything else that is similar (due to not liking the genre and play style). I have all of them and I have only used them as benchmark tools. I also like to support GoG because they are anti-DRM. If I like a product and intend to use it, I will purchase it. I will buy a license for each system... ONCE. I'm not paying them more than one time for a single-user/machine license that I am only using on one machine. The DRM filth makes me want to use a crack to play a game that I would otherwise have no interest in playing just to spite the sucky game dev and studio for their Nazi-like behavior.
The same applies to any other software. When they impose activation count limits and tell me I have to pay again because I have exceeded the activation count limit due to my frequent OS reinstalls and hardware swaps, or that I have to purchase another license to run it on more than one OS on the same machine, I am going to take whatever steps I need to take in order to continue using the product I paid for. I don't give a damn whether they approve of it or not. I gave them my money already, now it is out of their hands and no longer their decision. And, I sleep well knowing I did the right thing by paying for something (once) rather than stealing it. I have been purchasing Micro$lop Office directly from the Redmond Retards for years. As soon as they blacklist the keys I have purchased from them due to the frequent system changes I continue using the product through "unauthorized" means. I willingly gave them my money and have proof that I did. I did because they deserve to be paid and I do not approve of piracy, but after the purchase, I'll use my way.Last edited: Oct 18, 2021SierraFan07, Ashtrix, electrosoft and 3 others like this. -

I was going to install my 10900K in my X170SM-G, but I wanted to see how the 10600K that came with my system would overclock before I did.
I had some fun with it. I think it's a dud for overclocking since I have to apply an overvolt for any frequency higher than for 4.9 GHz, and I'm not sure my 4.9 GHz overclock is entirely stable. The voltage is already at 1.43v at that frequency.
5 GHz requires a 50mv overvolt to be stable, so I'm sitting at 1.48v now
. It's a thermal throttling mess for cinebench, but it works great for games. I'm not keen on leaving an overvolt applied all the time though. Yeah, I think I'm gonna install my 10900K soon for more interesting results.
On the bright side, I can achieve 144 fps in Far Cry 5 now since I can overclock to crazy high speeds. This'll allow me to power though laggy unoptimized Ubisoft games.

Posted a lot of stuff... but excuse for the tangential ranting.
I don't want to sugarcoat anything but here it is bro papu, DRM of any kind is nonsense. I'm not going to pay for that junk. Devs supporting ? yeah I do with buying some merch and artbook etc. But I aint paying for something which I will never own but get a stupid license which Steam or any digital store will have control over and shaft me when I say not approved safe space friendly stuff on their forums. Steam forums uses to be cool. Now if you say anything or point out anything, you will get a community ban if it goes far. Permanent community ban. If it goes even far then Permanently banned from Valve. EGS is a really trash store which deserves nothing, they just using that punk money from Fortnite garbo and Unreal Engine work, forum doesn't even exist lmao.
DRM is just utter trash. Every single corporation has an incentive to make money I get it. Sometimes some of them remove the DRM after a year or so, because the way how Denuvo works is it's contract based and it's expensive too. Crysis Demaster was under contract, the total cash was $140K for the DRM protection 12 Months remember this company was bankrupted with real talent leaving and now has that much money ? well they had the bribe from EGS for a year of contract and once the product ends on that platform exclusivity on PC the devs do not care or have passion they only care about money only exception was Metro Exodus because 4A was forced by their masters Koch Media / Deep Silver... on the same note of Crytek check this awful garbage from Crytek, simply ported bs console port because they know the money exists on the console cooonsumer platform esp that Switch where demasters sell for AAA tag $60, every single Crysis Demaster is a Junk conslow port, it was expected but they think people are dumb not to see through their BS.
And the way how Denuvo works is it generates an online token that is only valid for a few hours. I think a year or couple back the token activation limit was over a Week. Like you need to get Online to authenticate with the Servers to get the game running. Now the token window is so small, it's just 24-48Hrs depending on the game and also activation limits I think around 5 per 24Hrs or something. That means every single Denuvo protected game today that exists is an Always OL DRM system. There's no way out. One has to bend over. We have some really nasty companies that keep DRM for ages. Square Enix is one to note, Ubisoft is another, perma DRM.
Coming over to the other type of DRM looking at Blizzard, theirs is purely Always OL, the game code will run off their servers this means only partial code exists on the user computer. Which is really insane. Diablo III was not AlwaysOL on console junk but only on PC it is. The last game that Blizzard made that I would really care about is StarCraft II Legacy of the Void expansion. COD MW and Black Ops Cold War are strictly online only for SP campaigns. Ubisoft is notorious for not just one DRM but a Pentragramesque 4-5 layer DRM system. We all know UWP. Anyone who supports this is part of the problem there's no question about it. EA is in business Ubisoft is also along with other trash publishers. Square Enix tho lost their everything for that dumpster fire DOA Avengers, I'm very happy to see them go broke losing a ton on that. They killed Deus Ex for that trash, now in this current climate of triple A, I don't want Deus Ex get butchered, hopefully the IP stays dead.
The funniest part is how ADL is having issues with these DRMs lol. Big little junk and has some issues already, reminds me of StarForce and SecuROM which went bricking PCs and DVD drives. I wonder how old games will even work on this processor, will Intel Thread Director able to handle it properly and Windows10/11 NT Kernel will handle it properly ? Soo many questions for that new CPU design. I really hate Intel harder than ever, Sapphire Rapids doesn't have any of this junk but LGA1700 has because Intel screwed it up in the power consumption and clock scaling along with greed for BGA high volume junk margins to mint money. Also DDR4 like Gear 1 only system is now history. They hit the wall. RKL was first sign. You said perfectly how come ADL with reduced instruction set, reduced IPC, reduced clocks beat true full fat x86 cores on Ryzen parts. Unless M$ shenanigans or some weird DDR5 trickery is at work. Well well M$ already at work, their new updates kill Ryzen CPU performance badly on top of that VBS BS.
Final closing note, the same people buy the MTX laced total normie crud bottom barrel kool-aid with even worse tech, Kernel level Anti Cheat. Riot games mints bags of cash from their games Valorant, which have abusive system admin level access. Activision's latest COD has Ricochet Anti Cheat at Kernel Level with system admin level access as well. Stupidity beats everything when they outnumber others. It's going to get even worse as AAA is now more of a fancy politically checkbox driven trash than compelling escapism experiences and fun.
I will go one more step GOG has most titles with galaxy dlls which have issues on their own, if you delete it the game won't run but do note it checks with their servers and checks for their Galaxy client always when you execute the game exe. So yeah every single game distribution out there has it out for you. The only silver liming is GOG is still there and exists even with some negatives. Their recent fiasco was controlled else they would be losing sales from their relatively small user target. To those who do not know, IOI had new Hitman reboot listed on their store, which was designed to be Always OL Server side game code to play the game for some features in the game itself. GOG listed it on their DRM free store with an Always OL DRM not working means only 50% of the game and worse blasted reviews calling this BS out (check this link on how GOG was intimidating lol). However GOG quickly controlled before it would implode on their face and removed the game.Last edited: Oct 17, 2021electrosoft, Clamibot, Mr. Fox and 2 others like this. -
Cant comment on everything as I dont follow it all as closely as you have but I remember me and my friend would often remind people that Steam is still DRM. They have done well in disguising that fact with generally speaking how well it runs (certainly not in the beginning) and likely more importantly the steam sales but lately and I believe this may be similar for many others who've been in the target market that sales and free games have for the most part lost their luster as the list of genuinely interesting titles has always been small to begin with.
The one that irks me more often though is the EA Online store, Dead Space 2 I have to yell at them to reactivate the license because its out of tokens but from an unprincipled point though their customer service is better than most. Just wish I didnt need them every other time I think about playing an EA title lol
Not a pro or con point to @Ashtrix just my 10 second opinion to add to the mix.

I dont have a wide array of software to grant me that perspective but software with valid licenses without the Internet or some kind of non-local timer out of the box is long since deprecated.
Thanks! it takes up about 4 square feet in the corner of my room, it took a while to setup in a manner that doesnt dump 1500w of heat into my bedroom, I'd like to hit 1Gh/s, not sure if I can do that reasonably. Sourcing cards that dont appear to be sketchy has been getting less common lately. Wanted to get a few 3080's but with Nvidia muddying the waters I may have to stick with AMD for the remainder until I hit 1Gh/selectrosoft and Papusan like this. -
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Almost everything Galax releases looks aesthetically hideous to me, and that white GPU with the geometric shapes in the plastic is no exception. That looks horrible to me. It might run well, but I wouldn't want a tacky looking GPU like that in anything I own. And, swapping the thermal unit out for a water block to cure the ugliness is not something you can easily do if the PCB is not a standard reference version. In fact, there may be no water block available in some cases.electrosoft, Rage Set and Papusan like this.

Looks generic to me, I wouldve thought this was a Gigabyte card

Not trying to do a thread hijack with all my recent posts, but I just thought I'd report my results with my 10600K since I've been messing with it.
This thing does not want to go any higher than 5 GHz. No amount of additional voltage will keep it stable above that frequency. I even tried applying an additional 125mv, which resulted in about 1.56v being pushed into the CPU. Even that didn't keep it stable at 5.1 GHz, and I'm not willing to test higher voltages than that. Anything higher than 5 GHz seems to be unattainable on this 10600K.
It's definitely time to have some fun with the 10900K.
