Yeah out of 12 the lowest was an SP81. The IMC was the icing on the cake. If it could do >=4000 I would have contemplated keeping it and seeing where the OC would take me but that just sealed the deal.
Did you see the guy who walked into Best Buy over there, bought one and it was an SP96? Nice.
A few of our local Best Buys have one in stock. I might see if they are available tomorrow morning and just ride up and exchange it if I can to retain the 10% discount.Kana Chan, Papusan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
5.5Ghz at 340 watts temps are 58-67C. I’m still reducing for R15 runs. Then I run full AVX loads, and add voltage until it is stable “If Needed”
What a chip lol. My mount was not good or something, as I was saying solder was still on the edges of the die. I must have missed some solder some how, only a mirror circle was in the center of the silicon. After cleaning it up, this thing is like a totally different CPU now. Weird!

In “Profile Test”.
Out of all (100) people there are only like 5 actual people running 5.5Ghz. And that is due to us 5 people having IMC’s made of unicorn horn and then wiped clean with tears of the fall unicorn lords. Everyone else is on exotic cooling, with IMC’s made of standard horse hooves lol.

Well, the CPU from Brother @Talon seems to be stuck in Dallas and now expected delivery date no longer shows when I look at the tracking number. It arrived in Dallas just before 1:00 AM this morning and hasn't moved.
So, just killing time now. Hopefully, it will show up tomorrow. Otherwise, I guess it will be Monday. That must be why they call it "Priority Mail" LOL.
I got sick of the vertical GPU. I honestly never really cared for it, and it made doing anything in the case a huge pain in the butt. Problem solved. I personally think this looks better as well.
Finally got around to installing Linux again on my work desktop. ZorinOS 16 Pro with Cinnamon DE.
It is so stinking hard to find anything good or nice to say about Winduhz 10/11 trash.
One of the many lovable things about Linux is the ability to install and run a variety of desktop environments at will. Same system as above, but ZorinOS Desktop versus Cinnamon.

So yesterday I thought I would finally mess around with memory overclocking on this Gigabyte Aorus Elite DDR4 motherboard and I couldn't get any overclock out of it. After struggling with it for a couple of hours, it seems like it's a bug and that ALL of the Gigabyte Z690 boards suck, but at least Buildzoid has some hints:
Looks like I may be looking for a DDR5 kit and an Asus MB sooner than I was planning, ugh...Ashtrix, Papusan, tps3443 and 1 other person like this. -
I don't recall exactly because it is rarely talked about in the current culture that besets us all, but I can vaguely remember that the silicon cut from either the center or outer edges of a large wafer is always of higher bin quality. But, I could also see batch numbers having some kind of influence as well. Even in a sterile and controlled environment, climate conditions and other factors can cause minor variations. It would stand to reason that all of the CPUs from a particular batch would have the same ideal/less ideal influence on them.
I always find his videos informative and educational, but painful to watch because of the rambling. I know it is because he loves the subject matter, but often find myself skipping around because of the rambling. The guy is brilliant though. It is unfortunate that we often find out after the fact that we wasted money purchasing an inferior product. That has happened to me more times than I would like to admit. I think the underlying cause is there are not many superior products to choose from, and lying and deceitfulness have become an artisan marketing strategy. What little experience I have had with Gigabutt hasn't impressed me.Last edited: Dec 11, 2021Ashtrix, Papusan, custom90gt and 2 others like this. -
@electrosoft Don't feel too bad, I am right there with you. My 12900K is a SP82. I always strike out with Intel on SL but I tend to get the best from AMD, go figure.
-
So, killing more time... I noticed that my dual rank B-die was getting a lot warmer than my single rank. Makes sense, but I also noticed if the memory stayed below 40°C it would pass TM5 tests that it would fail with errors if it hit 45-50°C. I had some kind of tacking-looking RAM heat sinks that came in a bunch of stuff I purchased really cheap on Craigslist. They are brand new. I wondered if they would help, and guess what? Dropped my overclocked RAM temps by about 12°C. What was more revealing is how worthless the heat sinks are on the G.SKILL Ripjaws V modules. They are very thin aluminum and attached to the ICs with what looks to be two-sided Scotch tape. And, the tape was not even sticking to some of the ICs. They came off with almost no effort by lifting them away from the modules with a fingernail under the edge of the heat sink. They're not the best looking things, but definitely work well. I might see if I can remove the heat pipes and that would actually make them look pretty nice. I seriously doubt the heat pipes are helping anything. I think the thick aluminum body is enough that the temps probably won't change. These are old suckers. They are made before DDR4, but they fit perfectly. The kit came with little fans, too. I can't feel any air being moved by the fans, so I doubt they would be of any value.

This is true. Your AMD gets are really nice. Your golden 5800x was definitely better than my golden 5800x (super golden?).
Only once did I get a golden Intel chip right out of the box and that was my original 9900k p0 which was better than my 9900ks for overclocking but ran much hotter at stock (hence the 9900ks for the P870TM). -
I discovered this when I got these Corsair sticks. G.Skill is terrible at cooling ram. You can overclock the nuts out of them, but they’re as frail as aluminum foil under load.
What I don’t understand is, their Royal-Z line is supposed to be the premium lineup. And they too have the chintzy aluminum heat spreaders.
This is why I was considering watercooling memory when I owned that G.Skill 4x8 set. G.Skill needs to hit the drawing board again. -
These are the heat sinks I think I mentioned to you when we were considering me buying those ugly Royal-Z sticks. They would look a lot better with these on them. Especially if the heat pipe is easily removed. (I am going to look into that a bit later. I think I can probably pop it off with a flat-blade screwdriver.)Papusan, electrosoft, Rage Set and 1 other person like this.

Doing some 3DMark benches on a non-fresh install of Windows 10 using the 12900K on the Strix D4 with the Asrock 6900 XT. Apparently, all of my 3DMark results are invalid because I somehow modified the tessellation. All I did was update the AMD drivers. On UL's website, they say that newer AMD driver software modifies the tessellation, that I must do a factory reset (which I did) and the problem is still reoccurring. I'm going to do a full reinstall of the AMD drivers and see how that goes, but this is driving me insane.
Ashtrix, electrosoft, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
I think it’s 3Dmark. I had issues some days ago with CPU Profile test saying invalid every run. I had a HOF top 100 run with the 11900K at only 5.4Ghz. And It was the only 11900K at 5.4 in the whole (100). And, it said my run was invalid. I’ve since fixed it, but it was frustrating. 3Dmark was so impressed they were like “Pffffffffffftttttttt no way” D, D,D Denied lol.
My 3Dmark is through steam, which is even worse. -
Damn! I should be back on the HOF with this run... https://www.3dmark.com/fs/26778666 (In better news, this Asrock card while still air cooled for the moment is still impressing me).
I have two installations of 3DMark, one from steam and a solo install. Both have the same issue. -
So they (AMD) think they know better than the users? I can see Microsoft ain't alone create a mess for the users. This is just tragic. But I expect benching isn't on their agenda. Sweet looking apps and nasty software settings as default is what todays pc users prefer over anything. And the OEM, M$ and HW manufacturers deliver it in loads. Yep, that's insane

It sucks that 11th Gen does not clock as well as 10th Gen does. I feel like if this was a 10900K, it would probably run 5.6-5.7. While most 10900K’s can already do 5.3Ghz 5.5Ghz. And most 11900K’s can only do 5.1Ghz to 5.25Ghz.

New Firmware Boosts RTX 3080 Ti Mining Speed By 21 Percent tomshardware.com
This whole conversation started when Reddit user @bravo_char, posted information on how to improve the performance of the 3080 Ti. According to him, most RTX 3080 Tis with the default BIOS have a hidden power limit that is activated during periods of high memory load, which is a trait of mining workloads.
Thankfully, the issue was brought to EVGA's attention and the company has issued a fix. Bravo noted that after updating the firmware on his XC3, the card went from 66MH/s to a whopping 80MH/s, a gain of 21 percent.
But the results could be even better than what EVGA's cards can achieve. Another miner known as Red Panda Mining on YouTube, upgraded his Inno3D 3080 Ti iChill X3 to the EVGA XC3 BIOS, and gained an even-higher 91MH/s.
Yep, the miners live in a golden age. With good help from Nvidia and their AIB partners

11900K @5.5Ghz all cores during (Cinebench R20) run.
This CPU is certainly competitive against overclocked 10th Gen in multithreaded applications. Unfortunately not all 11900K’s can do this.
Testing AVX stability does require 1.550V for 5.5Ghz on this chip. I’m going to assume it’ll be ok daily long term, since my temps are in check. I think it will be ok.
So, straight 5.5Ghz is 1.550V with no AVX offsets stable. Or, I can run 5.5Ghz with -1AVX offset with only 1.495V. Or, I can run straight 5.4Ghz with 1.450 volts.

A pretty disgusting experience. AMD Ryzen. The snappiness of this 5000 series chips is bad. Load etc Cinebench from Benchmate take several seconds. I expect Win 11 is one of the reasons for that. Even my 10 years old two cores Intel chips and whatever OS I use load benchmarks faster than this. But a few more trophies and points for @Prema Team

Better chip overall even being an SP82 vs the old SP81.
That SP81 was not very good (me being polite). IMC tapped out at 3867 and at pure stock (cmos reset) it pulled ~242w vs 215w on the SP82. Even running @ 4100 the SP82 pulls 1.261 under load and 217w CB23.
A combination of a decent SP82 vs a very bad SP81. In the end it is still an SP82 but at least I'm ok with the IMC before moving on to seeing where it OCs.

I'll see how far it wants to go. Right now I'm running the B-die with loose timings so I can see where the IMC gives up the ghost.
It's crazy we're back into the land of RKL massive variances in pull considering the difference between the SP81 and SP82 is ~240w vs ~215w. Heat and temps again is a major consideration. I'm sure there are worse and there are better. I suspect SP90+ pull under 200w or even 190w but I haven't gathered enough data.
And yeah, even the worst 12900k is still a monster and really outclasses 11th yet I'm equally excited (if not more) about the X170KM-G I have coming in tomorrow to install this cool hand luke 11900k and start tweaking and optimizing.
If what seems to be is true and the X170KM-G is the last of a true desktop CPU laptop, might as well ride it out.Papusan, Rage Set, Clamibot and 1 other person like this. -

Having some computer problems and seeking advice from you guys. I am having an issue where my computer with freeze/black screens, and or BSOD (so fast it doesn't log the error/I can't see it before it reboots). Sometimes it will lock up, then BSOD, sometimes black screens on both displays then BSOD, sometimes sound will cut out and then BSOD. This all occurs while gaming. What I have found is that I can trigger the behavior by moving to my secondary screen while in game and opening chrome or other programs and so it seems to be driven by using dual displays/moving off the main display although it will still crash even at idle in game with both screens open eventually. At least when using a single display/full screen the issue doesn't seem to occur or maybe I've missed it during all my troubleshooting.
I've been ripping my hair out over this issue that has now persisted over my 11900K across 2 motherboards and now my 12900K seems to also have it on the Z690. I've now used 3x different kits of ram so thats not the issue. All pass memtests and stress tests, and JEDEC/XMP does not matter. 3 CPUs. Multiple CPUs from 11th and 12th gen. So that is out.
The other day I was at Microcenter and grabbed a 3060 Ti that they got in stock when I snagged my 12900K. I pulled the KingPin and put in the 3060 Ti this afternoon and VIOLA, no more BSOD. Now this could mean bad PSU since the wussy 8-pin 3060 Ti obviously is not as power hungry, or it's a bad 3090 or bad display ports on the 3090? vBIOS issue?
I'll likely ring EVGA in the morning and see what their thoughts are. Both PSU and 3090 are still well under warranty through EVGA. I would like to get this fixed ASAP but feeling relieved swapping GPU has seemingly fixed it.
Edit:
I should add I've done clean installs of the games, OS, and DDU to Nvidia drivers. I've swapped display ports and even cables. I've done chkdsk and sfcscans. I've tried just about everything. -
Are you running any power cable extensions to your 3090?
Have you tried another bios on the 3090? Have you checked to make sure no particular components on it are getting hot?
I’ve never had the issue my self. And I hope I don’t. Hopefully you get this figured out.
Also, do you have any jumpers switched on the 3090KP? -
I'm using this cable kit, but have swapped back to stock EVGA cables with no change unfortunately.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HMFZLR8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
I was thinking the vBIOS, but I do think I've tried this previously with no change. I will go back and retest this, and maybe flash back to the non ReBAR vBIOS since I almost never use that/turn it on in BIOS.
The DIP switches are in the stock position/Off. I'll try and monitor the ICX sensors next. Let me swap back now that I've at least verified the 3060 Ti has no issues. Been gaming on it for a couple of hours and trying my best to get it to crash but nope. I can do whatever I want on the system and monitors and it chugs right along.Papusan likes this. -
If it just recently started doing this, I doubt very seriously that it is something like the vBIOS. Firmware can have bugs, but it doesn't magically change by itself. (Unless you have a fancy turdbook that allows drive-by shootings, phones home and takes its orders from someone other than its owner.) I'd be looking at a recent Windows update first, (more likely cause,) drivers and would start with the GeFarts driver.
Can you check event viewer and find the bugcheck codes? They can be helpful. Go into Advanced System Properties and clear the checkbox for automatic restart.Last edited: Dec 12, 2021 -
Welp. I'm not sure what NES (the old blow into the cartridge) gods blessed the issue but between 2x DDUs for both Intel iGPU drivers and Nvidia drivers, a fresh Nvidia install, and swapping GPUs, it's somehow working fine now? WTF!! I suppose it's possible that when I swapped to 12th gen I didn't manage to properly click the GPU and it was working when under lighter loads? Honestly dumbfounded. I'll update if it BSODs again, but for now so far so good again. Thank god I can finally go back to tuning my CPU/memory. I put it all to stock while I tried to figure out this issue.

I did not, but I suspect they will be here soon going via snail mail. Unless you used a plain letter-sized paper envelope with no cardboard reinforcement on the inside. If that is the case, the screws and tool might have been ingested by a mail sorting machine. Hopefully, won't be too much longer.
When they are fast, they're fast. When they're not, they suck. It used to be the most affordable, fast and reliable way to go and now it is none of those things. It might still be the cheapest, but not by much. Earlier this year I placed an order for a couple of Koolance QD3 fittings from Performance-PCs and it took 14 days for them to get to AZ from FL using "Priority" mail. It took 11 of the 14 days for the package to leave Florida. And, the status was never updated in terms of expected delivery date. It changed to in-transit on day 3 or 4 with no expected delivery date and went from in-transit to delivered. Never had "out for delivery" status.
The waterblock I recently sent to @Rage Set and the 11900K sent to @tps3443 were delivered on day 3.Last edited: Dec 13, 2021Papusan, tps3443, electrosoft and 2 others like this. -
