So I recently decided to try out WoW again with the Vanilla server announcement at Blizzcon. The other morning when I launched the game I thought I heard some weird noises coming from my PC but when I took my headphones off I could not hear anything and I thought I was just imagining things. This morning I launched the game and heard an extremely loud buzzing/coil whine type noise. Opened up my PC, everything appears fine with my video card and the sound appears to be coming from the PSU. Something odd that I noticed is that the pitch and volume of the sound changes coming out of the PSU, depending which character I have highlighted on the character selection screen, it seems to be affected by what background is behind the character and almost as if the specific effects going on are causing the issue. Original races from the game is the very quiet sounds you hear, the loud sounds are from selecting a Deathknight or Demon Hunter class with their special backgrounds and snow/fire effects going on behind them. I am assuming it takes a little more power to run the graphics for these screens vs others and when it is trying to draw that extra power, that is what is causing the volume of the issue to go up and change? Not sure, I find it a little odd and even amusing what is going on and wanted to share it. I've had this PSU for 9 or 10 years, I got my moneys worth and cannot complain but I was in the process of building a new desktop and selling this one to a friend, now I need to buy a part for this one before I can go any further which is kind of annoying = \. The PSU is a Tagan BZ700 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817814015 which they sadly do not seem to make anymore. Really loved this PSU, worked great and lasted me for years, and I liked the blue fan and illuminated modular ports on it.
I just wanted to share, and see if anyone else has experienced anything similar. I've had coil whine before and had PSUs die before etc etc, but never seen something like this where it was so intermittently displaying the issue depending on what was going on at the time, let alone fluctuate so much and change just by which character I have selected on a login screen. Afraid it may just crap the bed pretty soon and it potentially taking other components out as well.
RIP Power Supply
