cool. i'll be heading there this week, or next, to grab my MoBo and 6700k.
the Corsair Strafe RGB (with the Cherry MX Silents) is my top mechanical KB choice so far because of it's aesthetics.
i like how they did the white/clear trim around the keys. my build is mostly white so it'll match it nicely. LED's will probably be off, or on the lowest settings, most of the time.

Hello
When u posted here, we (the public) didn't know that at Computex 2016 which just ended, Intel would release the Broadwell Extreme series of Cpus; it's available right now at MicroCenter as of a few days ago: 6800k is the entry candidate, at MCenter's low price of $400.
I had a choice to say nothing, or, hear later about why I said nothing, possibly. You spoke of 6700k, in the same week just about as Broadwell's release, so we can open debate SkyLake vs Broadwell-E, if anyone would like to. I still suggest the 6700k, based on your budget & needs. But I thought it'd be fun to hear what other people have in mind.
They reqwire different motherboards, since they use different sockets. 6700k Z170 chipset is a 95w quad-core, 6800k X99 chipset is a 140w hex-core.
Skylake motherboards can upgrade to KabyLake later, oh, 3/6/9 months or so, since it will be Intel's next release. Broadwell-E will be the last of its kind, (it's the upgrade path from Haswell-E, circa 2014) & so it is the top CPU & last cpu those motherboards will be able to use.
Skylake is a mainstream quad-core, Broadwell is an Extreme Cpu, available in 6, 8 &10 cores. The 10-core has an MSRP of $1723 but is thankfully only $1600 at MCenter (150 less than Newegg). As time progresses, a person may find the 6850 | 6900 | 6950 for less, for depreciation, pay less.
Any Asus X99 chipset socket 2011-v3 will be fine for Broadwell. The Deluxe II (revised for Broadwell) is their Flagship X99 board, $420 Newegg. MCenter appears to have Sabertooth X99 & X99-E (white accents) $240 / + $30 off. The *X99-Pro is a $315 choice, so is *X99-A (~$225). *not at MCenter, Newegg etc. MCenter has two 2011-v3 boards, listed above, at the time I looked of course
The world is a-buzz over competitions between 6700k & 6800k, so you can find all that online, utube etc, duals between these Cpus to figure out which does what best & which might be best for you & your needs / expectations.
Again, I suggest SkyLake, then move to Kaby later, but you're bound to see Broadwell at your MCenter, & I thought I'd mention it now than later or never.Last edited: Jun 4, 2016Kaze No Tamashii, TomJGX and houstoned like this. -
yeah, i think i'm just going to stick with the 6700K. the extreme processors u speak of just sound like overkill for my needs/wants. i doubt i'll even be pushing the 6700K to it's limits because i'm no OC'er.Cass-Olé likes this. -

going with the Asus
i couldn't live with that green color that the Gigabyte G1 comes in lol.
i'm waiting for MicroCenter to open up and then i'm gonna head that way. surprisingly, i've never been to it lol. -
went to Micro Center earlier, but they were all sold out of Asus Z170 MoBo's. also got to try the Cherry Reds and Browns there. after messing around with both, i was confident that i'd be happy with the MX Silents.
they didn't have the new Corsair Strafe RGB with the Cherry MX Silents, so i just ordered it online.
the guy helping me told me that they are getting 2 "big" shipments in this Monday and Wednesday, so i'll be heading back there later.Cass-Olé likes this. -

the main purpose for the first trip was to really go play around with some mechanical keyboards. i'm glad i did because i guess they've come a long way.
the build is almost there: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/h4tmPs
just waiting for the Asus ROG Strix 1080 or the EVGA FTW 1080 to hurry the hell up and get released. MoBo, CPU, and the Samsung 850 Pro SSD will be bought as soon as MicroCenter gets more Asus Z170 Deluxe boards back in stock.
@HTWingNut: really glad that u suggested the Corsair Strafe RGB to me. i just received it today and it's been awesome so far.
the Cherry MX Silent switches are pretty damn silent. it, pretty much, sounds like typing on a regular keyboard. it has an almost "cushion-y" feel to it without those annoying clicks.
there's a ton of custom RGB profiles on the Corsair forum too. i'm going to install some and play around with it a bit more. i saw a Star Wars one where it looked like 2 light sabers were doing battle on the keyboard.

sigh . . .
so tired of waiting for a EVGA or Asus Strix card to go on sale. i've been checking religiously every day for over a week.
the EVGA 1080 SC went on sale today and sold out in like 7 minutes. by the time i got the notification email, it was already gone.Talon likes this. -

even have the text alerts on.
almost got an EVGA SC a few days ago, but it was sold out as soon as i clicked the link... -
-
got an alert email this morning for the EVGA SC on EVGA's web store. i immediately jumped out of bed and grabbed the CC. i hopped on my computer ~> clicked the products page ~> waited about 5-6 mins for it to finally load up ~> clicked 'add to cart' ~> waited another 5-6 mins and it came to an "error reaching EVGA site" message.
by the time i was able to get back to the 1080 SC's page, it was gone and replaced with an 'auto notify' button instead of 'add to cart'.
an hour or 2 after that, i got an alert for an EVGA 1080 Founders Edition on Best Buy. i said F it and added it to my cart because i'm just really frustrated at this point. by the time i filled out my info and clicked 'place order', it was sold out ...
Newegg had an ETA: 6/13 for the Asus Strix version so i've literally been refreshing my browser on my phone and computer since 9pm on 6/12. nothing yet. i feel like i'm about to jump kick my girl's dog.Cass-Olé likes this. -
today, i struck out on the EVGA 1080 SC from the EVGA web store and 4 Founders Editions -- Amazon, Best Buy, and twice at Newegg.
le sigh.
i got an alert at around 4am for a MSi 1080 Founders Edition, so i just settled for that.
tired of camping sites day and night. my F5 button can finally get a rest lol.
plus, i can always sell the GPU later when i want to upgrade to whatever's next. 1080 Ti or 1180? i can finally get this desktop up and running! -

i just really wanted an aftermarket 1080 because of the better, more silent cooling solutions.
i'm about to start putting this together! i chose next day shipping from Amazon, so hope my GPU gets here by this weekend.Last edited by a moderator: Jun 17, 2016bloodhawk likes this. -

that's my parts list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/zzy23F -- i need to redo the math with the tax included and see what the damage was. i was trying to save some money by not buying a new gaming laptop, but that plan went to crap lol. my original budget was like $2000-$2500. i'm guessing i've spent around $3500 already.
all this junk has been sitting next to my computer desk for a little while:

first and foremost, i want to thank all the guys that helped me in any way, shape, or form on this build. i really appreciate it.
#SnowWhite fired right up when i plugged her in
i guess Noctua has made a believer out of me. i got the 2 NF-A14's running intake & the 2 NF-P14 Redux-1500's on my radiator. 7 140mm fans total and it's about as loud as my NZXT Cryo LX laptop cooler lol.
if u subtract the monitor from the build, i still went over my planned budget. i'm about to order a set of white cables from CableMods as well.
i haven't booted up Windows 10 yet. i was going to wait for my GTX 1080 and just do a whole big initialization process.TomJGX, killkenny1 and Cass-Olé like this. -

in the meantime, i can use this til the 1080 Ti or 1180 comes out.
i've got 2 Noctua NF-A14 FLX's running intake + 2 of the 140mm fans inside the case blowing right at the GPU area. -

every review i've watched, or read, has been raving about the Strix 1080.
i'm not really worried about a couple of bad comments on Newegg.
i might upgrade to one of the watercooled 1080's, though. if the NZXT G10 adapter works for the 1080 then i might consider that as well because the bracket is available in white.
stupid green letters!

well Tex? I know that feeling when you get your hands on a nice motherboard; yours looks mighty fine in the piktures; I do hope it feels premium to you there in person & that you can tell you got your money's worth, got a lil' bling with it. For the kute lil' power supply? Lil snow bunny? Nzxt builds in a two-way mounting system, at least for phantoms they did, which allows an up or down fan mount. When fan is placed down, it woofs kool air in from underneath, through the filter. When placed upright? Which is how I have mine? I've bought a sqware dust filter to place over the fan grille for two reasons: to filter dust & akt as a skrew katcher. Got it? Dust bunny filter can kome off for piktures ... take kare til you get a 140mil dust skreen for your lil' precious
Lights! Kamera! Aktion! Kraken!
edit: up is fine; now it's been turned into a good large case fan earning its keep.

fast forward to today. i took my tower to MicroCenter to try to see if the Knowledge Bar guys could help me figure out what was going on. if it was, indeed, a bad MoBo then i could've gotten a replacement while i was there.
the tech plugs up my tower, pushes the power button, and then it boots right up to the Asus UEFI BIOS . . . . . . . ended up buying a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router on the way out lol.
as for the PSU mounting, i just couldn't stand the look of it while it was upside down lol. something about the wording being upside down just irked me. the bottom of my case does come with 2 dust filters that cover the whole bottom.Last edited: Jun 21, 2016 -
where/what are some good benchmarks to test my CPU and GPU?
i've just been messing with the fan profiles so far. the Asus MoBo auto OC'd my CPU to 4.6GHz and my memory is on XMP mode running at DDR4-3000MHz.
i've only tested League of Legends so far and it hasn't even made my system break a sweat yet. temps were hovering in the low-mid 30*c range and i haven't even heard my GPU's fan yet. i'm about to DL MSI Afterburner so i can get a little more familiarized with it. -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
for CPU - AIDA (paid) or Prime 95 (free, use version 26.6!);
for GPU - Unigine Heaven.
Well, LoL isn't exactly the most demanding game of them all, so if you want to really push your system, you should try harder
Also, I would suggest you redo your OC manualy. Auto OC usually adds too much voltage. You already know your stable clock (hmm, 4,6GHz doesn't sound that much though), so you could try lowering your voltage from there.houstoned likes this. -
honestly, i'm a total noob when it comes to OC'ing. this is my first time really even messing with it so i have no idea about voltage and all that stuff. i don't think i'll be doing any extreme OC'ing where i'm running my CPU/GPU at 100%. i'm cool with a stable OC that makes it run around 70%-80% when i feel like pushing it.
my fans are also running pretty low. i don't think they've even hit 40%-50% yet. i will have to DL Afterburner to really mess with the fan settings a little more.
messed around with MSI Afterburner this morning and i'm pretty happy with the results. i wanted to test the GPU a bit because of a few horror stories i've read about the card running hot.
right out of the box, on stock settings, my 1080 boosted right up to 1911 clock speeds. i was able to OC it to 2139 and around +350 (i forgot the actual number) on my memory clocks. the Heaven benchmark started crashing when i set the memory offset to +400, so i stopped. with the fans at 100% my card was hovering at 60*c to 63*c, so i'm pretty happy about that. i will be gaming with just a mild OC of about +50 to +75 on the clock and around +100 to +125 on the memory speeds. already set a custom fan curve and the card is pretty unnoticeable when the fan speeds are below 75%. all in all, pretty happy with my purchase so far.TomJGX likes this. -

Everything is proceeding according to plan. Hot sauce Tex, hot sauce. I frequent Alienware forums, helping those pre-built system owners to mod their way towards a better future. A 4year friend ? I sent him your pics, here's what he said: "Makes we wonder why I’m even considering an Aurora R5. Look at all that room! Fill it with beefy retail-class parts … I think maybe its time. If a person has the tech-skills to build their own machine, they probably should, right?". Right. Here's the new R5 he was thinking of buying, not a pricey one of course, but yes they do get pricey fast. Not such an offensive Alien kreature on 1st sighting I suppose. Seemingly harmless even, like a pet rock for your earthly living space
Now, I know I can buy dual-1080s & 6700k for $1700, right? Right. Here's the hazing challenge:
There will be those who go for 'top-of-the-line' & pay $4000: they may be doing so as we speak & will take delivery soon. I hope this form of knowledge can & will help you step outside into the cold of the reality lived out by others, & after you can't take the bitter cold anymore from staring at the picture? Look away, turn away, say brrrrrr & look over at what you have there, & enjoy the warmth of comfort of what your hard-earned $ has bought u & brought u there: a Penthouse Suite with the dial on the furnace turned up to 80 ...
Knowing how bad others have it, helps us 'member how good we have it ... (the curious fact resides in how the R5 owner may have a joy eqwal to your own from what they've bought there ... ignorance is bliss over in Alien World)
btw: the answer's no, they can't have a baby window --> or it just might overheat. Thanx for havin a lil hazin fun with me
________________________it has a swingout power supply / caddy, it's a 'solution' to help make one of the smallest cases that can run dual-cards + top radiator

low performance
64Gb bare naked 2133 memory is $850, 4pin CPU power (not 8pin), GPU-augmented powa is only using 6wires (not 8), ummmm, whimpy cable set, 80Plus Bronze psu, basic 25mm kooler. $2300 won't buy them jack ***. Slide the side panel back on, tell people u got 1080/6700k & enjoy your $4000 pet Alien

that's crazy. is that 2nd picture of an R5 disassembled?
my Asus 1080 Strix OC should be around Tuesday and i had to do a custom order on my CableMod kit. i needed a longer 24-pin cable to route it through the grommet i want in my case. the 24-pin that's included in the kit is only 600mm (SeaSonic's provided cable is 610mm) so i emailed them about a special order. i wanted the whole kit but with a 700mm long 24-pin cable instead and they basically did it for me for an extra $20 bucks. my kit came out costing $109.90 instad of the regular $89.90. a custom 24-pin from the configurator would've costed $40, so they basically "hooked me up" for half off of that.
honestly, it wasn't very hard to assemble my desktop -- especially with the help from u guys and just studying a bunch of Youtube videos. just have to take your time and humble yourself enough to ask for help when u need it. this is the first desktop i've ever assembled, by myself, from the ground up.
i got bored and played around with overclocking a bit more. i was able to get my GPU to 2152 boost clocks and +500 on the memory.

*sniff* *sniff* she's so . . . . . . . beautiful.
loving the Asus Strix 1080 so far. quieter, cooler, and this thing looks straight beast. i kind of hit the silicon lottery with my Founders Edition because it can actually overclock to a higher max core clock of 2152. but that's with 100% fan speed and it'll still throttle down to around the 1900's to right under 2000 core speeds sometimes. my Strix 1080 hit 2101 right out of the box and is able to maintain that speed the whole time during my benchmark tests. plus, it hovers at around 55*c with a custom fan curve that's still very quiet. i might change out my RAM's light bar kit to blue because the white RGB setting on my GPU and MoBo have a slight purple hue to it.
Founders Edition is going back to Amazon tomorrow. i'll be saving over $81 bucks because the Strix 1080 came from Newegg and they don't charge tax. alot of retailers just bumped the price tag on the Strix 1080 an extra $50 bucks also. i feel super lucky.
