    I have an Alienware 18 from 2013 With these specs: i7 4900mq 16gb ram @ 1866 mhz 512GB mSATA SSD Boot + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 2 x gtx 780m (SLI)

    Before anyone says anything, i realize that compared to the actually quality of the build the price was too high, but the reason i bought a portable gaming laptop is that i have traveled a lot in the past years;

    Now I've been thinking that, as I have a lot of money saved up maybe building a powerful, future-proof (compared to the AW as), gaming rig will be worth it. considering that my budget would be of (more or less) $2000, Is my alienware rig powerful enough for at least the next year considering i'd like to play on ultra settings at at least 50 fps, and therefore wait a while before i build a new rig, or will my AW's specs not hold up for that long, meaning that it's worth building a new rig now.

    Like I said, I Honestly only care about 1080p gaming and I'm perfectly ok with 50 fps even though 60fps is obviously preferable, anything over that i personally don't care about. Anyways as long as you guys think that a gtx 780m sli gpu setup (which is basically equal to a gtx titan (older model) in performance according to many hardware websites, only on games where sli is supported) will be able to run games on ultra settings (no vsync and AA not necessarily at the highest settings) at 50-60fps for the next year or hopefully more, i won't proceed with building the new rig until later on. :)

    Wait a year... The AW18 is still capapble for 1080p gaming... Pascal will be there in 2016 and it will be worth building a desktop then..

    What do you think? Do you feel like you need a new PC? Does your lappy have troubles negotiating (new) games or it can't play them at graphical settings you would like it to?
    If the answer is yes, then get a new PC and don't think about it. For 1080p tops what you should get is 980, 980ti is overkill, and with 970 you might need to lower some setting to get 60FPS. Though you mentioned it's not critical, but sometimes games stutter so much, it's either better to lock at 30FPS or lower down setting to get 60FPS locked.
    Otherwise if the answer is no, wait a year. There's always something better around the corner.

    Never wait for new hardware. There'll always be something else coming... buy now, build now... then start saving again :)

    If you are happy with the AW18 you should be fine to wait a year (or more). SLI 780Ms are pretty powerful and should be able to game at high/ultra 1080p for the foreseeable future. On the other hand if you are planning to sell the AW18 and build your desktop it would best to sell sooner rather than later as, with most things, the value will decrease. Right now we've got new Intel CPUs and newish Nvidia/AMD GPUs so it will be a few months before anything new is released. The only time to not buy is if you know something else is around the corner that is worth waiting for.

    If you sold it as-is with the 512GB SSD I'd think around $1500, but that may be way off I don't really keep up with the 18s and I'm not sure how demand is for them.

    I've thought about it and i'm gonna stick with the aw for an year or 2....I'm still running far cry 4 maxed out with vsync at constant 60+ so that's a good sign :D I'm just gonna save up more and get an even better rig. Thanks for all the replies guys!

    The sli 780m/i7mq was a good machine to buy at that time looks like u got a lot out of it and a year or so can't hurt. Do you plan to sell it or keep it around when you upgrade?
