What's in your desktop?

There are many like it but this one is mine:
Some time ago I finally got around taking couple pictures of my gaming rig. I bought new graphics card and used the opportunity to blow some dust at the balcony as well as take the pictures.
Case is Cooler Master HAF XB EVO
Sound card with front panel is Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Champion
Optical drive is dvdrw+bluray read.
CPU Cooler is Corsair h100i with four 120mm fans, since the GPU update only 3 fans
Mainboard is Gigabyte z97 Gaming 5
CPU is Intel i7 4790
RAM is 4x4GB (16GB) Kingston 1600mhz DDR3
new GPU is Gigabyte GTX970 G1 Gaming
Five drives inside: 250GB and 500GB SSD, three traditional as storage.
Keyboard is Xtrfy mechanical kb and with the GPU I bought some rubber washers to silence most clacking. It has Red switches that do not click.
Mouse of the day is Logitech G300. I don't like bigger mice, since I use finger grip.
As a monitor I use LG 32LM660T television. It has all the Smart TV things and also passive 3D. Since it's only for gaming and movies, 32" and 1080p is good enough for me. I'm so old and slow already that if there's input lag I do not notice it. Cannot really imagine playing with a smaller screen eithern=1, Jarhead and killkenny1 like this. -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Here's mine.
Sorry for potato quality photos, took them with a smartphone in a very bad lighting environment.
What really grinds my gears tho, is that even in such crap quality dust is very noticeable. Need to get a big brush and a vacuum cleaner to do a proper cleaning later. Also will put some dust filters once screws arrive from China.
My old laptop was way easier to clean from dust from desktop...KLF likes this. -

Checked my photo archives, and apparently I only took pictures of my desktop partially assembled while constructing it, and they were even more potato-quality than killkenny1's pictures, thanks to being from not the my dumbphone that preceeded my smartphone, but the dumbphone before that. Since it'd require some actual effort to get decent quality photos, stock photos will have to do. Though I'm still somewhat surprised I have more pictures of dragonfruit than my desktop.
The case is the Antec P280:
It's actually pretty big, though the stock photo doesn't make that clear. It's designed to be quiet, and I've been pretty happy with it. Other than when I briefly had a reference R9 290X, a card infamous for being noisy, it's always been pretty quiet.
After a few piecemeal upgrades over the years, it has:
Dell U2412M monitor
Core i5 2500K CPU
CoolerMaster 212 Evo CPU cooler
Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 GPU
8 GB G. Skill DDR3, 1600 MHz
DVD R/W drive, plus Blu-Ray R/DVD R/W drive (upgraded in 2013)
Vintage mid-'90s floppy drive (not currently functioning due to lack of mobo support, though likely still in working condition)
Gigabyte Z68 motherboard (4x USB 3.0)
Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600
Gigabyte M7 Thor wired mouse (replaced disintegrating Microsoft Sidewinder X3 in 2014; I like big mice)
$30-ish Logitech speakers from MicroCenter
Grado S80 headphones (upgraded from Sennheiser HD 280 Pro in late 2013)
2 TB 7200 RPM Toshiba HDD (replaced WD 5400 RPM in 2013)
2 TB 5400 RPM WD HDD (backup)
256 GB MX-100 (upgraded to in 2014)
80 GB Intel 320 SSD (now booting Linux)
So, HDD, SSD, mouse, headphone, and speakers is what I've changed since it was new. Might do a refresh next year, but am still pretty happy with the core components' performance. -
Not exactly my build, just did a hugely budget build/salvage for my brother a couple of days ago and it feels appropriate to post it here.
In 2010 I did a office/media build for my parents business. The office was very dusty/sandy/dirty due to the nature of the type of business and work, and I'm fairly certain they never dusted the system even once. Fast forward to today and they're using laptops and the desktop was sitting in an attic. I've been telling my brother we could salvage the build and use parts of his aging GX660 laptop to get him a decent gaming rig. He called me up and said lets get it done since we both had the day off and nothing to do.
The rig when he removed it from the attic: The pictures just don't do justice to the heaviness of the dirt/dust. It was caked on, and very difficult to remove. Especially the fans since they were reused.
Cleaning it up..
MSI P55 CD53 -reused
Intel Core i5 750 @ 4.0ghz 1.3v with max gaming temps around mid 40s. -reused
Corsair H55 AIO water cooler for CPU. -$60 Micro Center
MSI R9 390 8GB - Open Box $280 @ Micro Center & Free Dirt Rally Game Code
Crucial Ballsitix Sport 8GB 2X4 1600mhz $43.99 @ Micro Center
OCZ 120GB SSD - reused from laptop
WD Black 7200rpm 750gb - reused from laptop
Corsair CX750m -donated by me since it was sitting in a box since I upgraded to an EVGA G2 850.
Antec 300 Case - reused
2x120mm intake fans - reused
1x140mm exhuast fan at top - reused
Win 10 Pro OEM - $55
Total cost out of his pocket was about $460.00
I was blown away at the performance of this build. He is able to run current titles like H1Z1 at Very High even Ultra settings with well over 60FPS @1080p.Apollo13, n=1 and killkenny1 like this. -
6 cans of compressed air? Wow. I can tell from the pics that was going to be a lot of dust, but that's a ton of compressed air.
All in all quite nice. I'm not surprised it can run new titles well - the 390 is a very respectable card, and that's a great price on it as only Micro Center can provide. At 1080p it should handle essentially everything with aplomb. CPU-heavy titles would suffer a little bit compared to with a newer Devil's Canyon-ish CPU, but Nehalem is not nearly as far behind the latest as its age would suggest, and 4 GHz is a very nice speed. Definitely a better value for the money than going with all-new components; well done. -
Got the 980 KINGPINs in, finally got an SLI setup in my desktop again after a couple of years lol.

Actually I only sold my Titan X because someone was looking for a high overclocking one and they paid me a decent price. I was able to get the 980 KINGPINS + the SLI bridge for $100 more than what I sold my Titan X for after shipping/taxes. -

Even now it's not bad, at least in my experience. I'd rather have 60fps SLI than a 40fps single setup. Lower than 60fps is horrible on my 4k tv. Feels extremely lagy. It's not G-SYNC either.
I will probably keep these until the Pascal desktop cards come out next year. Thus far they're doing good. 80% of my games support SLI properly anyways and if there's any issues with SLI you can turn it off specifically for a game, at half the performance of two cards of course. -

@ssj92
Wow... I basically did the opposite of what you've done. Did away with 980SLI for a single 980TI. Best decision I've made in a long time. Microstutter on Maxwell is appalling .
But you're running 4k, whereas I'm doing 1080p 144hz so I'll let you be the judge of your experience.
Shame we couldn't have just traded had the timing been different. -
In Game Mode (4K @ 60Hz @ 4:2:2 chroma) the input lag is not bad, around 18-21ms I believe.
And if you are not using either of those modes it's like 112ms LOL. I usually use PC mode 24/7 for my PC and for my Wii U/Xbox One I use game mode.
The computer desk is very old....like I think 17-21 years old LOL. No idea where it's from at this point.
Sadly at 4K I needed extra horsepower. I will sell these when Pascal comes out and get that card. I would have gotten SLI 980TIs but most of my money went into the laptop beast.TomJGX likes this. -

Specs are in the signature.
Still going through some changes; removed one of the Titan x cards due to micro stuttering in some games (fallout 4, Battlefront) and setup both with hybrid coolers.

What physics score do you get in 3dmark11 or firestrike?

LOL my scouter says otherwise
My 10-core Ivy Bridge-E scored around the same Physics score as a 4.5Ghz 4960X so I'm curious to see where this 14-core stands.Dark_ likes this. -
Still a ridiculously powerful rig. Tetradeca core, crazy GPU power, and actually having over a hundred gigabytes of RAM. Some ultra-thin-bezel monitors there, too. Quite impressive.
Though I do wonder if it's optimal for gaming. That Xeon is only 2.3 GHz, and I'd be surprised if it could OC more than to the mid-3-GHz's with that many cores. Though presumably with such beefy specs, it's being used for more than just gaming.Dark_ likes this. -

*edit* 3dMark11 might not be a good version for me, looks like I'm getting the frame cap issue that others get (caps at 60fps).
Downloaded the latest demo and I'll give it a shot tonight.

Yeah gaming performance for me on my 10-core was fine as well even though single threaded apps were faster on my overclocked i7. Video rendering was much better still on the 10-core.

That's exactly how my 10-core Xeon was, wonder if the new 3DMark benchmark for next year will make better use of more cores.Dark_ likes this. -
In my nvidia control panel it has the second titan-x listed as my physics processor (won't let me select the cpu).
It this a common setting? -
Yeah that's normal. That's for nVidia PhysX, it doesn't affect the 3DMark Physics score.
Here's the results from my 10-core laptop:

old desktop from my parents that i got when they got a new one. Have it for a year now and recently started to improve the machine again. Cleaned the whole machine up and installed some fans. Upgraded windows 7 32 bits to windows 10 64 bits and just orderd another 2x2gb RAM.
Asus P5Q Pro
Intel core Quad Q9550
Radeon HD6950
Kingston HyperX DDR2 4gb
An awefull and really old Dell monitor and keyboard
Been overclocking a lot with it. The old ram is giving me headaches so i hope the new modules will work better. CPU running at 3.84Ghz now, but not stable in Prime95, im pretty sure the RAM cant handle the higher clocks and not the OC itself. Have finished wPrime at over 4Ghz. Flashed the 6950 to 6970 specs but not a lot headroom for overclocking now.

I had a few spare parts laying around and figured why not build another box. I am thinking about trying to get as much overclock as I can out of the CPU/GPU, otherwise I have no real plan/need for it.

Nice! I like the hefty increase on Physics thanks to that 6 core.
Were you running 2000mhz mem on the titan? I haven't touched mine yet considering I can't find much on what others have set theirs to.Last edited: Jan 3, 2016 -
Yes the 6-core makes a nice difference. 8-cores get even higher.
I ran 8Ghz (2000Mhz) on the memory. My 980 KINGPINS did 8.6Ghz (2,150Mhz) but here's a run of them at 8.4Ghz (2100Mhz) with a think a 1550Mhz core clock?
