I just replaced my Hyper 212 cooler and after I removed it I discovered these marks, there are corresponding marks on the CPU as well. I had recent lapped it but I had rinsed it out with isopropyl alcohol fairly well, I had been attempting a run at 5.0 and the temps were quite high for short periods. Has anyone seen this?

looks like burn marks as it is mostly on the heat sink my guess would be:

    A. tiny amount of metal/something stuck in gap between the heat pipe & the metal block, it is strange that it is in the same place on both sides of the block

    B. that is the remains of the fluid from the middle two heat pipes

    you probably know this but:

If you are lapping to see an increase in cooling you need to lap both faces (heat spreader & heatsink) as CPU heat spreaders are not flat, the increased thermal performance most of the time will be very minimal

Also you would see a greater increase in cooling performance by deliding the CPU & replace the thermal paste - look into how to do this for your series processor as the last few gens of intel CPUs have had a very thin PCB making it easy to damage, cannot do what I did (hammer & vice method)

as normal my advice will break your warranty

Thanks for the reply, I wonder if there was some alcohol left over which reacted with the TIM that caused the burning. As for the lapping, I discovered some pitting so I was mainly trying to remove that, I didn't want to lap the CPU. I also don't want to delind it until I have one standing by to replace it. I will try it some day though. The combination of lapping and using a better quality TIM dropped my temps about 5 degrees, not enough to cool my new 7700k for 5.0 so I bought an Corsair AIO cooler which made a huge difference and allowed me to get to 5.0, I now game at 4.9 and the temps stay below 80. I'll post a shot of the pitting I had at the bottom.

    Thanks

AIO coolers help a lot... Air coolers just can't keep up after certain clocks... I have a Corsair H115i and it keeps my 6700K really cool :)

I like it I just wish I had been able to get one with a 360 radiator but the circumstances didn't allow.

Lol, there is room on the top of my case for one so modding was necessary, It was the fact that I was able to grab this one off the shelf at Best Buy.

When I get around to building mine I think I will get one of these.

I like that, it definitely looks better then using a vice.

Works pretty good. This one isn't for Kaby Lake but the Delid 2 will be.

It's much safer so if you are going to risk a delid, worth getting it!

Not sure I'm brave enough. :D I'll have to see how the temps are when I finally get a build together. Within the next month or 2 hopefully.

It's just like the mark made from an electric arc, leaving carbon residue behind.

Of course, how could it be that?

It's possible, since it's a regular pattern between the same "layers" on either side of the heatsink build, it could be some contaminant leaking through from the layers that got trapped during the assembly, and gravity / heat leached them out.

Maybe send the images to Coolermaster and see what they say?

Sending the image to Coolermaster is a good idea, I'll put that on my to do list when I get home. I also thought of rotating it 90 degrees to see if the marks move, which I'm almost certain they will, or not. The problem is that I't installed on another machine at the moment.

Does anyone have any statistics about how many delids fail and what kind of performance boost I could gain?

I don't know any statistics, but I'm sure the failure rate is higher with a vice and hammer than it is now with special tools made for delidding. HardOCP got a pretty good drop in temps, depending on the TIM they used, on the 7600k. They were also using water cooling. I think the boost would depend on what you want to achieve. I would have to see what my temps were at the overclock I wanted before I would try delidding.

Agreed... The vice method is not that safe.. The specialised tools are much more successful as they are literally designed to be used even by idiots, excuse the pun, but you get the idea..

Could those marks be from certain thermal paste like IC Diamond? I remember people used to say it would leave marks on heatsinks.

I haven't use ICD, Grizzly Hydronaut was the latest paste. As soon as I transfer the build its on now to a smaller HTPC case I'm going to see if those marks are there with the MX-4 paste.
