Hello,
I recently built a desktop with a Ryzen 5 3600. I used the factory heatsink and fan that comes with CPU. It spins from 1400RPM to about 1900RPM. The CPU hits 95C with Prime95 and only 4 threads, around 80W, Its frequency drops from 4.2GHz to 3.8GHz and there it stays but at a constant 95C/80W. I first used a graphite pad, and then changed over to Kryonaut with no difference to the thermals,
Whilst the machine runs fine, I believe 95C to be unhealthy. I can buy another heatsink/fan even though having already paid £170 for the CPU, paying another £40 for a good cooler means a ~25% surcharge for what it should be out of the box.
I have not tried overclocking or undervolting.
Has anyone tried another cooler for this CPU and was it worth it?

To answer my own question it appears the included cooler is very weak, hence the bad temps.

I have a Scythe Mugen 5 Rev.B that I picked up for $40 on amazon that does an amazing job on my 3700x. Much cheaper than the Noctua/be quiet stuff out there...

Not gonna derail this thread, a better thermal paste like IC Diamond or Kryonaut or Phobya Nano Grease or Cooler Master Maker should last a long time when paired with cooler suggested by custom90gt.

To stay on budget I have ordered
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0068OI7T8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
which will arrive in a few days.
I will use the Kryonaut thermal paste on it.
It is a shame (a scandal?) AMD's own fan allows the CPU to reach such high temps,Vasudev likes this. -
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO installed: very bad (and small) instructions, very, very bad back plate insulation (dangerous, had to use an additional sheet plastic insulator), assembly rotates a few degrees even if firmly clamped (not great when using graphite pads), temperatures much better than with default cooler (-10C). Would not buy again.

I would like to say this for those 1000s of posts slamming the AW15 and other laptops like the Clevos that get hot.
The Ryzen 5 3600 has a surface area maybe three times as large as the i9-8950HK. At around 80W it reaches 90C with a dedicated cooler and fan maybe three times the size of the AW17R5, and inside a wide open mid tower case with two 120mm fans pushing extra air through. The AW17 manages to draw 110W out of a CPU a third the size of the Ryzen 5 3600, with a cooler a third of the Ryzen's, and inside a case maybe a tenth the amount of free air. Based on this I'd say the AW17 is a hero. I should copy this to all the laptop bashing threadsVasudev likes this.
Very hot Ryzen 5 3600
