Comments on other games:
WoW's FPS flat out doubled. At times on PCI-E 1.1 it was as low as 16FPS. Now I see no lower than 32 FPS. Wow would definitely benefit from even more bandwidth.
On PCI-E 1.1, SWTOR had microstuttering around 30% of the time. This microstuttering was eliminated with PCI-E 2.0.
SC2 can now be run with ambient occlusion on without stuttering.
BF3's fps improved significantly. With the game maxed out I used to see fps as low as 20 with PCI-E 1.1. Now the Lowest I've ever seen is 28fps, with significantly higher average fps.
A PCI-E 2.0 adapter is definitely an upgrade worth getting over a 1.1 adapter.
Setup:
It's plug and play. Nando's setup program is not required. All I needed to do was plug everything in. The startup sequence is boot with eGPU off, then turn it on as soon as the laptop begins to POST. If I boot with the eGPU on I get 2 black screens, unless I do not have a driver installed for the graphics card (extremely weird), in which case a normal boot occurs and my TOLUD drops to 3.0GB. Sometimes only a PCI-E 1.1 link is negotiated. To correct this, I use the "safely remove hardware" utility in windows to disable the 580, then I turn it off and back on, and a 2.0 link is then established. I have the graphics card supported by a styrofoam cutout. The PE3A as at the perfect height to be supported by a CD case. Note that with the 460 that hotplugging was necessary instead of simply powering on the 580.
So should you get a PE3A or wait for the PE4L? It depends. Remember that with the PE3A that you have to solder on an external 12V supply, and after that you may have to disable the internal 12V supply. If you don't use your laptop's screen and keyboard while using an eGPU, you don't have to hotplug, and you have faith in your soldering skills, I'd get a PE3A. The PE3A makes using the laptop keyboard awkward, but that's no problem with a USB keyboard. Also I would not get a PE3A if you have to hotplug due to how fragile the PE3A is.

Is the 6870 really that bad on Windows? I mean I look at benchmarks online and see that it can play games such as Battlefield 3 with fps over 40... Sure it's not full x16 pci-e 2.1 but it can't be that bad. If someone uses a 6870 with an egpu, benchmarks would be awesome

And I looked at websites for getting 5xx and 4xx to work with lion. Over the past 4-ish months, the way you get it to work has changed. This isn't very reassuring, since it probably means I will have to alter the files every time there is an update (which I probably could do, but I would rather just plug and play).
And does Optimus work with with an external monitor? If it is only internal screen (which I know CUDA is internal only) then I don't have any reason to buy an Nvidia card.
If this were my decision, then I would buy a 560ti and solely use my macbook for Windows. But my parents told me I had $1000 to find a desktop solution for the family (mac mini as desktop, egpu for me/ mac mini). The last thing I want to happen is waste $200 because the Nvidia card I bought for my own benefit doesn't work with the family computer

With PCIe 2.0 Gb/s, 6870 is not that bad compared to Nvidia but if Nvidia can provide better performance, why you want to get ATiAMD instead?
Optimus is not CUDA. The Optimus compression will engaged on both internal & external monitor.
Please look at my eGPU experience (link in my signature). I did a comparison between PCIe 1.0 x1 vs. PCIe 1.0 x2. The PCIe 1.0 x2 is equivalent Optimus setup with current kit (x1.Opt). -

Like I said earlier, you can't get both; good game performance & compatibility on Mac. If the latter is most important, 6870 is suitable for you. However, I don't see Apple offer 6870 in MacPro, only 5870. Anyway, even if you use ATI instead of Nvidia, there still a chance the driver support can be broken in next Mac software update. This is downside when using non-Apple hardware (PC graphic card) on Apple computer, running Mac OS X. It has happen in the past & I'm sure will happen again in the future. The only foolproof solution if you buy Apple graphic card. The highest ATI card is offered by Apple right now is 5870. -

I saw it on sunday, sounds like an 8x PCIe 2.0 should do the job very well (and that's double of what we can have at best with a single thunderbolt port.
Surely TB will fit the needs of these newer cards IMHO. If modular configs will be the future (and i hope it), we'll see optimization in that direction, unlocking Optimus compression for link > x1 (nVidia side) and and implementation of something similar from AMD.

My apologies if this has been posted (I've been googling and reading forums threads for days now) or if this is not the right place.
I have a Sager NP5160 / Clevo W150HNQ laptop and wish to use the free mPCIe port for a firewire card (for connecting a soundcard). I have attempted to test the port by moving the WLAN mPCIe card but have had no luck.
From looking at the slot it seems that all pins are connected but I don't know if this rules out it being usb only. The other thing to note is that the port has "3G" (WAN) written next to it.
I also attempted to connect a TV tuner card from my old laptop which seems like it is USB only (I'm assuming this because of the reduced number of pins) but didn't see anything appear.
I asked about this in the owners thread for this laptop but was simply told the port is disabled.
I've tried using Nando's setup program to enable the port but when I run the IPORT enable command it seems to just hang indefinitely.
Anyone know any tricks to get this port working?

It seems like 560ti will work very easily even on a Mac pro ( unlike 460 which will have issues)... So if it is in your price range don't bother looking for 6870 cause it doesn't worth it. OS X major updates come every ~6 months and you just have to add your device ID to the specifies kext, no big deal. Since you are originally tempted to buy an eGPU for gaming purposes 6870 won't be enough. I initially purchased my eGPU for video editing and wifi exploitation tools and that's why I went for amd (4870 for my c2d U9200 and now 5850).
But all game test show that Nvidia is far better @ x1.1 or x1.2.
EDIT: It also seems that 550Ti will also work on OSX. So if 560 is out of your budget you can go for a 550Ti. -
Don't know if it will help you cause it's my particular experience. I launched Setup 1.x via usb key and then perform pci compaction. Only one combination of pci compaction worked for me. 36 bits for Igpu then 32 bits for Egpu. After that, you chainload to Windows 7 and that's it. That's all i had to do, it was a one time thing. Now it's very simple, i just have to put windows in sleep mode, turn on the egpu and there it goes.
This aside, i finally received my Club 3D Green edition GTX 560 and i must say i'm in love. It's a little jewel, small, cute, cool and silent. Nice and compact heatpipes cooling system on board.

I can probably go with the 560ti. $210 (which is what I found on newegg) is the highest price I could go for, but my parents would agree. Getting the 560ti to work on mac os x will probably be fine, since of the cards I am looking at, it offers the best performance. And yeah, the AMD cards will probably need to be updated just like the Nvidia cards.

The main reason I was looking at buying an AMD card was for mac compatability. In all honestly, Both Nvidia and AMD will have problems with mac os x because Apple is a bunch of *!$@>'s who don't care about drivers -.-
The Nvidia 560ti is the best card I can get (that also works for mac) so I think I will go with that one. -

The fans staying on high speed is a sign of hardware problems. It could be your mHDMI cable.

Would anyone be able to confirm if cards could be switched with the PE4L? And example would be using a 560ti under windows, but using a 5850 under mac os x. The OSes would be dual booted on my macbook pro. It seems that the only issue that will arise is making sure I can easily unplug the cards; but I am building my own case for the eGPU so physically swapping them won't be an issue. Just wondering if switching between the cards will mean I have to re-download the drivers each time... Don't think I will, but want to double check.

Hey guys. I currently have a Dell E6320, a Vidock 4+ and a gtx 560 ti. I can't get optimus to work on this system thus far. I have the optimus drivers installed, but the only way I can get my computer to see both the intel graphics and vidock is to boot without the vidock being in the express card slot, once windows boots, I then insert the vidock card (hotswap?) and optimus is enabled (can see the appropriate option in Nvidia control panel) but then my computer locks up. Do I need to buy a copy of setup 1.x to get this to work? My 3dmark 06 scores are very low without optimus working (6300). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you try to insert the expresscard in windows sleep mode ?
Also, by curiosity, could you post a picture of the specs of your Vidock 150W power adapter (the one with two barrel outputs) or just say what's the name of the manufacturer ? That would be kind of you. -
I did try inserting the vidock during sleep mode. When I would wake my computer from sleep, my computer would reboot instead of just waking up.
I will be happy to give you guys the details on the 150w power supply. Will post when I get home.
Any other ideas as to what to try to get Optimus working? -

I have been doing some additional testing on getting optimus running and still no luck. I can now get it to boot and show both the intel device and the vidock using the F8 method at startup but my computer locks up about a minute afterwards. Anybody have any ideas how to fix this? -

Good news. On the next week i'll move from my i5-2520M to a i7-2630QM and from 4 to 8GB of ram. During the weekend i'll upload the last videos missing on the game benchmarking table and starting from the following week i'll post a raw comparison in performance between the 2 CPUs (always with a GTX560Ti).
Once i receive the PE4L 2.1 i'll start making videos of the most interesting games with the support of the PCIe 2.0. Feel free to request missing game videos in the dedicated thread

So far, from what i could tried, Dead Island, Metro 2033 and Battlefield bad company 2 worked flawlessly on my internal screen. It was with PE4H + GTX 560 ti. -
Just received my Gigabyte 7950 (the one with 3 fans) today, and tried to get it working with my Vidock 4+. Unfortunately no luck so far.
Windows detected new hardware and installed AMD video drivers and HDMI Audio device drivers from Windows Update.
I then installed the latest Catalyst drivers I got last night, everything looks normal.
Then I restarted the system, but my TV reports no signal.
Checked inside device manager, and it shows an yellow asterisk next to generic VGA display adapter, I looked inside and got a message that the device cannot be initialized. Code 10 error.
Restarted the system then opened up eGPU setup.
Tolud reports 2.74GB, with 128MB available for eGPU, reports allocation valid.
I proceed to do nothing then restart the system. Still Code 10 error.
Restart go thru eGPU setup menu, performed 32bit PCI compaction, successful. Choose chainload MBR, then it just goes to black DOS screen that says grub<.
Restart system, repeat compaction, choose chainload win7, same result, stuck at black DOS screen that says grub<.
System: Lenovo ThinkPad W520 (Intel 2820QM, 8GB, QM67)

Can you chainload your system after doing a clean boot, prior to any compaction? Have you loaded the last Lenovo bios that allows a boot with the eGPU attached and powered (at least does with X220/T420). -
Yes, I have the latest BIOS for the W520.
I will attempt chainload win7 prior to compaction now.
UPDATE:
shutdown the system for 3 minutes then did a cold reboot.
Went into eGPU setup and chainload win7 did work prior to compaction.
And version number is 1.10b2 instead of b1.

What does dGPU demotion do? Could it be the nVidia Quadro 1000M just doesn't want to play nice with the AMD Radeon HD 7950?
Update 2:
Shutdown, cold reboot, performed 32bit PCI compaction for all devices, report successful, chainload win7, stuck in GRUB again.
Shutdown, cold reboot, removed expresscard. normal boot into windows, hot plug vidock expresscard link after win7 desktop appeared, same result, Code 10 device cannot be initialized. -
Guys, I'm still very new at this "enthusiastic" approach. I have been doing some research into ThunderBolt eGPU solution and correct me if I'm wrong in what I found.
Current MBA has a EalgeRidge controller -two Thunderbolt channels (2 x 10Gbps bidirectional = 40Gbps aggregate bandwidth). Where as the MBP has a LightRidge controller (soon to be replaced by CactusRidge in next refresh, CactusRidge will also be the first non-mac TB controller -ThinkPad S430) -four Thunderbolt channels (4 x 10Gbps bidirectional = 80Gbps aggregate bandwidth). Is this right ?
Another thing,some people are saying TB offers us higher bandwidth upto 20 Gbps for eGPU solution. However I don't think we are getting 20 Gbps for PCIe data, but actually 10 only. Thunderbolt a has up to 20 Gbps available in each direction (full duplex). There are actually two channels over the same cable: one dedicated to DisplayPort for video, and the other for PCI Express data
So are we getting PCIe 2.0 x4 @ 10 Gbps ?
And According to here Sonnet - Thunderbolt Storage, Adapters & Expansion Boxes
they claimed to have a x4 expansion for Mac Mini (which as EagleRidge controller - four channels). Is this all true ?

The part number ST-C-150-12001250CT has a hit that leads to short-circuit.com from 2009. I emailed them asking if they still sell those AC adapters.
Other option would be a XBOX 360 203W adapter. It's 12V/16.5A, the end connector has room to shove a wire into the pins and attach leads to a molex/pci-e cable. It's slightly shorter than a small video card and two stacked on two of each other would be about the same height and give 398W (ie: could drive a GTX580). Only negative is it's supposedly has an internal fan, it's end cable is 1m long, fairly thick with a large ferrite bead on it. Could snip it off and wire directly to internal wires instead. Still it would be the #1 AC adapter I'd be looking at for a GTX560Ti or less. or 2 of them for a GTX570 or better.

We have little more info since Intel haven't released datasheets and developers can't get the TB mux/demux chips yet. We can only speculate that a x4 2.0 link is possible based on the Sony Z2 achieving that with the optic-based proprietory Lightpeak arrangement they have. pci-e 3.0 won't be included as part of the mobile Ivy Bridge chipsets. Would be great if it was since it's a doubling of pci-e 2.0 bandwidth. -
It does require 2x 6 pin power connectors.
So it should fit within the 225w ViDock 4+ power limit, at least in theory. -

ATI eGPU + Internal Screen is since today impossible (for non windowed apps). Although Nvidia (with Optimus driver) when paired with an Intel onboard GPU can drive the internal screen at reasonable frame rates @ x1 2.0, ATI hasn't provided such driver solution yet. And, here comes the Virtu Driver. It is a 3rd party solution designed originally for h67, z68 desktop systems which when detects an Intel HD3000 (and soon other onboard graphics solutions with Virtu Universal), it can use the GPU to drive games on Internal Screen.

I am discussing about ATI GPUs cause Nvidia Fermi already have a solid Internal Screen solution and older Nvidia GPUs are not officially supported by the Virtu Driver. So we are actually talking for HD Radeon 4xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx.Internal screen for ATI Radeon HDs only?
The driver is not originally designed for notebooks so you may encounter blue/black screens and/or freezes, but you can use your ATI card to play a game on your lappy's screen. Till now with x1 1.0 gear such solution wouldn't be tempting enough, but now with x1 2.0 solutions being very close ATI owners should consider (if they are not interested for a trade with Nvidia Opt. setup).
I tested this driver two months ago but the results @ x1.1 weren't satisfying so I didnt give time on a review (check 6950 Internal Screen results). But now with my 55$ PE3A- R @x1.2 + a 100$ 5850 Extreme the results are really playable.
I am also interested to attempt an resolution scaling on Internal Screen on various DX11 games. Hope I will find time soon.
I am suggesting this setup to every AMD eGPU user with Intel HD3000.
The setup is very easy.How to install - THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT. UPDATE YOUR INTEL HD3000 DRIVER TO THE LATEST. It seems to solve some of the blue screen/freezes problems (if not all of them).
On some machinesyou need to open Device Manager, manually uninstall the device reboot and then you will be able to install Intel driver. - After you have finished driver setup of your eGPU reboot.
- Install Virtu Driver (after you attach your eGPU) and reboot.
My first attempt with an HD6950 @x1.1 was very disappointing since I had too many blue screens ( I could never for example run a 3DMark11 test). After that I didn't try it for a while since a week ago when I started the tests with my 5850 @x1.2. Time due to exams was very tight but I could finally make it to complete this experience post. Well I found out that most problems were caused by the ULPS (Ultra Low Power State) which somehow reduce clocks and power on ATI cards when not in use. I had to disable it. You can do it by editing reg entries but this tool is much easier. Many thanks to the author. I also found out that connecting a screen on the GPU (even disabled) would be also helpful on some benches. For example 3DMark Vantage won't provide a total performance score (check the 6950 screenshots internal screen) unless a screen (or a dummy) is connected on the card (found out on 5850 tests). But this trick will cause problem on RE5 and DMC4 when running on windowed mode... and more. I personally recommend the 1.2.114 Virtu over the update 1.2.112 which would cause me hangs on 3DMark11. I will be happy to provide help to anybody else interested for everyday use.Experience so far

Amd gpus on internal screen. Yay. Thanks Timohour. Would be interesting to see HD 6950 or stronger on 1X 2.0 since there's no difference between 5850 and 6950 at 1X 1.0.

i buy GTX560ti. when i start notebook its switch to egpu but after 2 sec i have red/black lines
on monitor and notebook freeze. maybe wrong alocate 128MB+64MB+32MB. its posible to realocate it? or where can be problem?

Well...my friend reminded me that Catalyst 12.1 does not support the new 7900 series, so I have attempted to install the WRONG set of drivers.
So I removed CCC via control panel, did a driver sweep, reboot.
Inserted express card after Windows 7 completely loaded, install drivers from Gigabtye CD. Just when I thought I solved the mystery to my disastrous misadventure, bam, BSOD when attempting to install display drivers.
OK, auto reboot, remove CCC, driver sweep, reboot.
Plug in expresscard again. install AMD 7900 series driver from the web. bam, BSOD again. This time I had my camera ready.

What's the development status on the PE4H ver3.0?
Would I be completely out of my mind if I ordered the PE4H ver2.4 now just for the heck of it?
Nando4 mentioned the ViDock 4 Plus could have a PCI reset delay issue that could be interfering with my 7950, I assume the PE4H will not have this problem, am I correct? -
On PE4H the delay circuit is configurable up to 14 secs, so if that is the problem you could easily change it ^^
