I’m curious if anyone knows how this would perform in a external GPU box over Thunderbolt 3 “40gbps” using my laptop to power this..
I’ve just got a new GTX Titan XP special edition. I’ll be using a External monitor as well, to help with performance all I can.
I’ve researched external GTX1080Ti through TB3, but every scenario I’ve found is a laptop with an extremely slow CPU, and slow system memory on top of that..
I was going to build a desktop, but things have recently changed over night. And I’d like to use it externally through TB3”40gbps”.
Im still deciding on a GPU enclosure/ or box to use.
What kind of performance would you guys expect over a gtx1070? If I’m running through TB3, at 4K, and a external display, on a 7th gen 4.3Ghz+ intel i7 CPU.

You can expect about 1070 level performance due to being bottlenecked by TB3 to PCIe conversion latency.

Hmm That’s oddly slow, from what I’ve gathered.
Most external gtx1080ti’s I’ve found are ran on 2-4 thread thin and lights. With only 2-3ghz processors. But there still beating my built in Overclocked GTX1070 by a small margin of about 5-10% and this is not on a external monitor.
I was guessing it would run like a GTX1080 FE, but with much more VRAM as I’m running out from time to time.
I’m new to the external gpu segment. And was hoping somebody would chime in.Last edited: Jun 29, 2018 -

So best case scenario, gtx1080 like performance. I bought this card for $575. I hardly had the funds, but just couldn’t pass it up.
Unless I find a really good deal on a external gpu box with psu I doubt it’s worth the time.
I have no desktop whatsoever to put it in, so maybe a Threadripper 2 build in the future next year. I’m simply to broke to build something for it now, until then it will look nice and pretty on my desk lol!
I’m only imagining what my laptop would be like with this much GPU power!
If only they made laptops with “I/O” PCI-E plugs on them. Then you could plug a desktop gpu directly in to the source.
I wish.. -

Hmm never knew that! I always assumed Alienware being a proprietary plug for the GPU box was a bad thing..
