For ex. Photoshop is using the X3100 integrated OpenGL renderer rather the the external ATI Card...

You do need to have an ExpressCard slot for an eGpu; I assume you know that, but some people seem to think you can use a USB port. Sorry if your way past that, but since only the current MBP 17 has an EC slot it's rare that you see an eGPU with a Mac.

@masterchef: where did you get that amazing-sounding screen!

I suppose that depends on what you are comparing it with. It is the same thing that it is.

It's not my dream machine, it's just the notebook I had delivered from the future. I don't have any way of knowing exactly how far into the future it's from, or if the portal by which it was dropped came from a slightly different parallel universe where a recent release had different specs than the one we will get.

Hard to say with these things.

Just need to run the Photoshop on the external monitor (connected to eGPU). If necessary just need to set primary display to external monitor.

If some odd reason it still picked up the integrated GPU, just removed (make a backup first) the kexts responsible for integrated GPU. This way internal monitor will always stuck at Apple loading screen & external display will become primary display.
