I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I'm really curious about this.

Now, I already know about expresscard/mini pcie eGPU options out there, so none of that at the moment.

I know you can buy cards to attach MXM cards to a regular PCI express slot. I have yet to find anything on the opposite though.
It would be really exciting to have this option. It would not run into the bandwidth limits that other eGPU options do.

Not to mention for dual GPU laptops, one could keep an adapter blank in the PC alongside a regular MXM GPU so it can still be used like a regular gaming machine on the go, and for single MXM slot lapotps you would at least be able to use the intagrated GPU.
For Alienware laptops, eGPUs are awesome becuase you can still use the integrated display thanks to the HDMI input. However, for other laptops this presents a unique oppurtunity- I would image with the assistance of a dummy MXM card, you could potentially have it still output to the main display...at least I would think. The desktop adapters for MXM cards add DVI and/or VGA ports for external devices, though I know that doesn't mean it would be easy to do the opposite of that. Of course, one could just convert the output to LVDS and snap it right into the screen, though that would be a permanent solution without the ability to use the old hardware, which would mean the laptop would not long be portable.
First thing's first though - simple conversion. What are the differences between MXM 3.0 and PCIe? I really don't know much about MXM cards, and I can't seem to find much info on this either.

Would like to add, if it is possible, and no products exist to aid in this, I'm not afraid of making an adapter myself. With some direction obviously on schematics.

Found some info on MXM cards including a pinout with pin descriptions.

I will look it over tomorrow.

I might not have to time to look to detailed till wednesday night, but a quick look and I notice the MXM to pcie adapters appear to be actaully passive, meaning they are directly wired, no voltage changes. the extra jusnk is just to provide power to the cards and convert the cards output to external ports. THIS EXCITES ME. More to come. I might try to get my hands on one of these adapters to investigate. I still worry about the problem of the VBios. Now the solution to that probably lies in using a dummy card, but that is above my head for now until I get more info/do more research. What I do know is I can make it work in a desktop, meaning I convert a pcie card to mxm, then plug it in via an adapter. Sounds stupid and redundant, but would be a nice proof of concept.

You know, I have been really looking into that myself. I've been trying to get a prototype up and running, but I'm still in the design stage. If I could get one running though, provided the legal monkeys wouldn't come after me, I was considering making a kick starter for making these. My goal would be to get inexpensive adapters into as many people's hands as possible.

Anyway let me know what you find out, I'd be more than happy to share what I know as well.

    Hello :)
just checking in on any possible progress, and i hope that you might be able to help me out!
I have an medion x7820, and the only thing im not so happy with is the GPU, therefore i am looking into the matter of replacing it with an external GPU (i have looked at the nvidia gtx 970)
my PCIe ports are only 1.0 1x, which i understand is to slow for running an eGPU properly.
To find the information about the PCIe ports and all that, i have downloaded Sisoftware Sandra, and she told me that i had an 3.0 16x PCIe that my current GPU was hooked up to, so i got exited and thought that it would be easy to just hook up an PE4L setup. But i then found out that the PCIe port was an mxm, can i somehow just get an adapter to insert in the mxm slot and do the PE4L setup? or what needs to be done :)
sorry for any bad language and/or lack of understanding, i have looked in to it as much as i could but i cant figure this out.
    any replies are welcome!
