I've spent the last couple of weeks reading through the eGPU experiences thread and have decided to have a go at building one for my Lenovo X220. My primary goal is to be able to run CUDA-based programs but in all likelihood I'll end up playing some games too!

With this in mind I've decided to go for a GTX 460 as this seems to be the best balance between performance and cost taking into account the limitations of the ExpressCard slot. (Unless I go down the Quadro route - I may do this at a later date but I want to put together a working system first and then build on that.)

In the post referenced below Xav achieves a working system on a similar X220 with a PE4H, however I have read that the PE4L can take advantage of faster ExpressCard slots on Ivy Bridge systems. I'm not sure how this is affected by (or would affect) the Optimus performance so I thought I'd ask here, even though I am tempted to simply copy Xav's setup as it seems to be working for him!

    The post in question: http://forum.notebookreview.com/e-g...scussion/418851-diy-egpu-experiences-403.html

For reference my system is a Lenovo X220 with an i5 vPro and 8GB of RAM, and I intend to power the eGPU with an XBOX PSU.

You should bring your questions to the other forum board (forum.techinferno.com), as this section isn't going to be well maintained in absentia of Nando.

What's your question(s) exactly? You mean you want to know what's the difference between Opt1.1 vs 1.2?

Well for real world applications, like gaming, it can be significant. Check out Nando's Implementations table and compare identical graphics cards where they have 1.1 Opt and 1.2 Opt. For example:
    [email protected]
    [email protected]

Then compare the benchmark results. You'll notice that it can be quite a significant difference, in favour of the 1.2Opt.

Thanks for the reply - I'll continue to research this on here and on the other board you linked to which I wasn't even aware of!
