    Greetings,

    I have a couple of questions about building a eGPU, but can't seem to find a straightforward answer, so I was hoping you guys could help.

    (Correct me when I am wrong :) )

    EDIT1:
    I have bothered to read the whole first page of DIY eGPU experiences and I have to say, that it is an amazing summary. It has answered practically all my questions, which I have archived below.

    I am rethinking my decission in selling my old Lenovo X200 and I think I can get the performance I want from it although there are some things I dont know.

    1. For instance, can my CPU (L9400 1,87 GHz) bottleneck my eGPU (GTX 560 Ti for example)?
    2. Is there anyway I can overcome this bottleneck? Does the Octane rendering software help?

    OLD POST. PLEASE IGNORE

    Code:
     P.S. Do note, that I am kinda a nab at this thing, so bare with me and my long rant :))

    [LIST=1]
    [*]I have 2 laptops at the moment. The first one (the main one) would be Dell Inspiron 5110 with an internal Nvidia GeForce 525M. As I have found out, this Dell's chipset allows the PCI-E speed bandwidth at max 5 GT/s per direction, per slot. (PCI-E version 2.0)
    [*]I also own a Lenovo x200 Tablet. This lenovo has a GM45 Express Chipset, which, as I understand, has a max bandwidth of 2.5 GT/s (250 MG/s) per one PCI-E slot. In theory, the bandwidth speed can be max'ed out at 5 GT/s (500 MG/s), but that would be the case evaluating the speed in both directions the same channel (PCI-E version 1.0)
    [/LIST]
    So in comparison, Lenovo laptop offers an older PCI-E connection and thus, twice as slow GPU experience. Whit this information, I am assuming that building an eGPU would not bet worth the cost, because I could not expect to the performance I want.

    I would like to have 1 laptop, instead of 2, but only if it would have a similar GPU capacity, that is why I am thinking of building an eGPU.

    Based on what I have found, I plan on selling both laptops and buying a Lenovo X201, which would have support for PCI-E 2.0, because it would have an Intel QM57 chipset (5 GT/s - same as Dell 5110).

    [LIST=1]
    [*]Now, my first question would be: Can I expect a similar performance from Lenovo x201 with the same PCI-E speed capacity (when connected to an eGPU) in comparison with the Dell 5110 (mentioned above)?
    [*]Considering that the eGPU can be connected via expresscard or PCI-E x1 slot, could someone clarify, what is the difference between the two?
    [*]If I buy an eGPU adapter (EXP GCD Beast or PE4H/PE4L), is there a difference if it has a x16 slot on it or a x4/x1 slot, if the PCI-E slot on my laptop (which it would be connected to) would be a PCI-E 2.0 x1?
    [*]What is the difference between the EXP GCD Beast and the PE4H and PE4L besides the price?
    [*]If I buy a x16 slot eGPU adapter, does that mean I can expect a x16 worthy performance from it, it is connected the laptop via PCI-E x1 slot (I guess that might be the same question as above). If not, should I consider buying an eGPU adapter with a smaller slot or a stronger GPU?
    [*]Either way, I am kinda lost how this whole speed thing works. If my PCI-E slot is at x1, and the GPU is connected at x16 slot, does that mean the GPU is bottle necked 16 times?
    [*]How can I find out what components of my computer might bottleneck the GPU?
    [*]At my national forums, I have read a rumor, that the GPU connection is bottle necked by 20 percent when connected to a PCI-E 2.0 x1 and it needs a x4 slot to realize the full potential of the GPU. How can these numbers generated? How can I know how much of the GPU's true capacity am I using?
