I was trying to search for a guide, but couldn't find it. If anyone has a link to instructions, that'd be great!

A Thunderbolt GPU on a Mac : How-to | Le journal du lapin
its a monumental pain honestly on any machine without an internal expresscard slot. and it keeps breaking in OSX, and seems to be more of a windows solution. windows 7 is the only option if you want to use your internal laptop screen though since OSX does not have the ability to use an eGPU to backfeed the internal LCD.
I think there are still a few members who still use eGPU's I myself only use it on an older Lenovo X230.
I am certain that in another AV forum I follow there were a few who ran Sonnet Echo Expresses and were able to get them to work outputting to a pair of external screens without too much of a nightmare in OSX 10.8. 10.9 and 10.10 seem to be really buggy with external graphics.
We use these at work to give us raytracing and other pro features etc with Quadro cards from a couple iMacs.
