Hi every body, I am a new member to this forums and i hope to receive some good advises come from you guys![]()
My lap is ok for most the game however with new games coming as well as problem with mobility Graphic card so i try to looking a good way to upgrades. A desktop is out of question as it is too much for me to build a 'good' gaming so after a while looking on the internet i found this solution "eGPU". After long read thread in this forum and lots more research about it, i think it is the best way for me to get a gaming machine.
My current laptop is HP Pavilion dv6-3150sa Entertainment Notebook PC.
Processor Intel® Core i5-460M Processor
- 2.53 GHz (2.8 GHz maximum Turbo Frequency)
- 2.5 GT/s DMI
- 3 MB L3 Cache
Operating System Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
RAM - 8GB installed DDR3 memory (2x4GB which i upgraded)
- Supports up to 8GB DDR3 memory (2 slots)
Graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 Graphics (switchable with Intel HD GMA)
- 512 MB DDR3 dedicated
- Up to 3226MB total graphics memory
15.6" Full HD screen as i bought it with Blu-ray driver
Driver
- OCZ 120GB Solid 3 SSD - 2.5" SATA-III - Read 500MB/s Write 480MB/s
Its a good specific for gaming in my knowledge but the problem is
1st the graphic card is HD mobility with lots of graphic errors
2nd it is switchable graphic card which mean the driver update must come from manufacture(HP) which the newest is 12/2010
Some games i play got graphic error such as LoL( the screen break a part and i have to use Intel HD in orders to play) Dynasty warrior 7, etc. and i hate to have to look for solutions (which most of them dont have) every time i got an error so i come to final solution upgrade the GPU.
As i mention i trying to build an e-GPU which i already got an MSI R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0.
There is what i confusing about:
1 The basic question is my laptop and graphic card compatible to build an e-GPU?
2 My computer dont have Express Card Slot so that mean i have to use mPCI-e , does this mean i wont have wifi connection anymore and have to use LAN?
3 What is differences between PE4H and PE4L and what should i use for the best performance if i can build 1 ( btw i dont get what x1, x2 x4 isand my mPCI-e is 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0?)
In the end sorry for make this thread so long for you guys to read but i want to provide as much information as possible and I appreciate any help i can get.
Thanks again for reading it
Best wishes for everybody.
Kensei
P/S : is there any better way to buy e-GPU component from UK because it will take ages to deliver from China![]()

1) yes it's compatible but you'll be limited to 1.0 (2,5Gb/s bandwidth). Have you already checked TOLUD?
2) you could use a usb wifi card, they're cheap.
3) PE4H is to create connections higher than x1. You could do that only if you have more than a mPCIe slots (unlikely but you can check the insides of your notebook). You are 1.0, probably x1 1.0. Or at best x2 1.0.
They aren't sold by european retailers, AFAIK. Sadly, since I'm from Europe too! -
Thanks for the reply. BTW i found out that my lap is 2.0. i bought PE4L v2.1b and got it in about 4 days( quite impress as i thought it should about 1-2 weeks at least). I put everything together however my lap do not start. To be more specific the graphic card run normally but there are no signal on monitors, my lap still running as the light on my power button and wifi on and it turn when i press the power button again( without holding it)
i tried everything as i can do but nothing happen. so i try on my old laptop the monitor go up and window running but it got froze on window start up
I dont know what to do any more. Please help

What is your PSU? Has it got enough current on the 12V rail?
Also, have you tried switching on the egpu and then booting the laptop with the expresscard already connected? -
My PSU is a normal 400w PSU and i think i got it connected as the fan on GPU run normal and the light on PE4L also up. I tried everything i possibly think of and here are the result:
Turn on laptop -> turn on power for GPU ->connect to lap top=> nothing
Turn on laptop -> connect the GPU -> turn on power => nothing
Turn on laptop -> connect GPU -> turn on power when window logo start appear => nothing
Connect GPU -> turn on power -> turn on laptop => Laptop start with 2 short beeps and then stay there fan still running but monitor won't turn on and i dont think anything is running except for the lap top fan
Connect GPU -> turn on laptop -> turn on power => nothing
after a quick research on HP website i found out that 2 beeps mean BIOS got corrupted and wont turn on => need update bios but they haven't update any new BIOS for my model since ages ago.
Last solution Setup 1.x -> cost money and i dont want to risk it as it is like an extension of BIOS and since my Lap wont even turn on or recognise any new device when i connect the mPCIe so i dont think i can even go to bios menu of Setup 1.x to change anything

The only thing you didn't try yet is attaching the egpu during standby. I don't exactly remember, but it was something like that. You may want to search in the main thread.
And about the psu, what is important is not the overall power (400w) but the 12V power, which can be very smaller. Check on the label of the psu, your card requires about 150w on the 12V rail, which is not so little.
Some noob questions regard eGPU( I trying to build 1)
