Yeah I've been watching out for more announcements as well. I'm sure something will come up sometime this year. I ended up finding an Acer V15 Nitro Black Edition on eBay for $740, planning to use that when these egpu enclosures hit the market. In the meantime with a few minor upgrades its a good budget work/gaming laptop at only 5 lbs.

More on AMD’s XConnect Tech: Thunderbolt 3 for External Radeons
by Ryan Smith on March 10, 2016 9:00 AM EST
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/10133/amd-xconnect-external-radeons

"Today then is the formal launch of AMD’s Thunderbolt 3 video card efforts, which they are branding XConnect. The first drivers for XConnect were released last night, and now AMD is qualifying the Blade Stealth as the first laptop ready for XConnect. That said, it should be noted that while the Blade Stealth has been shipping for some time, Razer’s accompanying Core chassis has yet to ship, so anyone looking to try out XConnect will need to wait to get their hands on a Core."

'Mobile' depends on the strength of the owners. Wikipedia's M3xx table says Amethyst / Tonga (config / design) GPUs like M390X, M395, M395X, W7170M have 125w TDP so they tend to appear in large desktop replacement notebooks or all-in-one systems which have space for larger cooling radiators than more mobile laptops. Notebookcheck's Mobile Graphic Cards benchmark table lists them above 965m and approaching or passing a 970m depending on the benchmark. It also lists Neptune / Pitcairn GPUs like M390, M290X, 8970M (100w) and Wimbleton / Pitcairn GPU 7970m below the 965m and above the 960m. It lists a Saturn / Bonaire GPU M6100 (~75w) above 960m, while slower clocked Strato / Bonaire M385X and M385 approach from below.

Speaking of lists, someone has started a TB3 eGPU laptop list (laptops with TB3 that have or might someday get BIOS ACPI extensions compatible with an XConnect eGPU chassis).

Acer has announced a smaller Graphics Dock to give ultraportables a mobile gaming GPU like the 960m. I wonder if it uses XConnect.

Seems like eGPU for P50/P70 mobile workstations was still uncertain but in active consideration in January.
I wonder who their "partners" are?
Intel & NVidia ? (no AMD workstation GPUs offered are offered on P50/P70.)
Or their ODMs? (original design manufacturer/assembly factories)
    Or third party accessory companies?

An Intel and Inventec demonstration at the Intel Developer Forum in August featured two designs that appear to be earlier prototypes for the Razer Core (w/PCIe slot) and Acer Graphics Dock (w/builtin GPU). KitGuru via GLJ

Interestingly, one ODM, Inventec, appears to be involved in both designs.

I wonder if they were sponsored by Intel, so the expertise can be shared with other customers of Inventec, or if they were sponsored by Razer and Acer respectively, so the expertise is siloed in divisions for each customer.

Do docks need to go through a certification process before they can show the Intel Thunderbolt logo? (If so, a reason other docks all use proprietary connections might be to get to market quickly, avoiding an Intel certification bottleneck/gateway, where Intel can give priority to its favored customers.)

If someone can confirm that it works, I'm in the market for a P70. Till then, seeing is believing.
On the one hand I wouldn't count on a sales rep who may not be familiar with the tech details. On the other hand, only when and if someone tries it and shows that it is / isn't possible will I, personally, take that as a confirmed / final word.
I think there are is just not enough people who have the P laptops, are into eGPU, and have the necessary dock to actually experiment.

Powercolor announced their Devil Box, an XConnect Thunderbolt3 external GPU enclosure with PCIe x16 slot. Has I/O ports so it can serve as a dock, just connect the TB3 cable and power. Tom's HW noted it should be large enough for most cards alone but not large enough for a radiator as on the Fury X.

[Update: Tom's HW has more pictures at Powercolor's Computex booth, dwarfing an Intel Skull Canyon and what looks like a Razor Stealth. There were two prototypes, one with a handle installed.]

    • From the outside, looks wide enough for multiple cards (no CPU cooler to get in the way).
    • The edges and corners look like they could be sharp (zombie fans might like bloody cases or ripped clothing or luggage).
    • No case fan mentioned, to supplement the fans on the graphics cards to exhaust heat out of the case.
    • No case handle visible on one prototype, so when moving a notebook off the desk carrying this eGPU may be a two-handed task. The other prototype has a handle installed but it is off-center at the top edge, so when you carry it, the bottom edge could dig into your leg.
    • The extra rim lights might not be standard, but maybe a demo of what you can do, a customization for the showroom.
    • The mesh side appears to have four feet. Maybe it can work with that side down. But then the logo would be sideways. Maybe it was designed so it can work that way when a card produces less heat (small GPU, in winter), and can be turned to expose the mesh when a card exhausts more heat (large GPU, in summer).
    • No availability or prices have been announced, so they may be still feeling out the market.
[update3: Tom's HW asked and PowerColor is uncertain but expecting to beat the lower $400 price of the Razer Core.]

[Update2: Tom's HW visited two other booths at Computex showing external GPU cases.

Gigabyte was showing two prototypes, one using Silverstone's nice-looking desk-space-saving vertical design with handle. (Maybe for popular midrange GPUs, maybe to expand their BRIX computers as well as their laptops.)

Asus was showing their XG Station 2, adding a USB-C style Thunderbolt3 socket in addition to their proprietary connection sockets. Now at 650 watts, with 100 watts for powering devices over the Thunderbolt3 cable.]

Dave2d has reviewed the razer core on its youtube channel and the dell/alienware laptops could use it but had to deal with disconnects. Acer predator laptop experienced a very flaky connection.

That thin HP laptop couldnt connect at all.

It's promising to see AMD XConnect expanding the market for desktop GPUs and VR, and the technology could work regardless of manufacturer. So far the two reviews have tested NVidia cards in the Razor Core. I wonder whether Radeon GPU drivers/firmware work any better (less disconnects) for AMD XConnect communications via imperfect Thunderbolt3 connections and the Razor Core.

Dave2D tried ( Yt) quite a few laptops besides the Razor Blade, and Derek configured ( UbR) a Dell XPS 15 in addition to the Razor Stealth. But both only tested NVidia GPU cards in the Razor Core. Dave2D connected to an NVidia 1080 and an NVidia 980Ti. Derek connected to an NVidia 970 (MSI). Dave2D says he'll have an updated review when the new AMD cards are available. (It could be months before they make it to the street, though articles may start to appear June 29th when an NDA lifts.)

Bass at Lowyat says the Acer external graphics dock may come to Malaysia sometime in Q3. Fagot and Ngo at Notebookcheck estimate launch in Europe may be around September 2016.

The slim portable Acer external graphics dock was demonstrated with onboard NVidia 960M plus USB and monitor ports. It is expected to be around €350, including the on-board GPU. Notebookcheck links to their video ( Yt) from March 2016 at Cebit, where it is powering an Acer Aspire Switch 12-S.

    • This dock looks like a nice solution to add gaming-laptop level GPU power to ultrathin laptops and convertibles, great for travelers like many journalists, salespeople, and distributor buyers at conventions who prefer not to carry around a full size gaming laptop for work.
    • A traveler might use it while on a train or bus with power outlets. The short Thunderbolt3 cable might prevent putting the dock on the floor. The cable might reach to a net pocket behind the seat in front, or on top of a bag between the shins, if the dock can be positioned so the airways are clear and knees have space. Another natural position to try in cramped quarters is to place the laptop on top of the dock.
    • Placing a laptop on top of the dock might end up preheating the laptop air, so its fans would run louder, disturbing other passengers. Maybe that's one reason that the Acer display table in the video shows the dock with the convertible Acer Aspire Switch 12-S, which puts the processor behind the screen rather than under the keyboard.
    • The September date might be after next generation Radeon or GeForce mobile GPUs become available. They might offer more performance for less heat.

Notebookcheck has pictures of Gigabyte Thunderbolt3 dock ideas it is developing, one of which can house a desktop PCIe GPU card.
    • GIGABYTE GP-T3GFx (This number seems to be used for multiple eGPU designs.)
      (The vertical Silverstone case.)
    • GIGABYTE GP-T3x550-AT2
      (The dark horizontal windowed case.)
    • GIGABYTE GP-TBT3
(No GPU. Many ports, including slots for SD cards, PCIe M.2 SSDs, and WiFi.)
    • GIGABYTE GP-T3U3.1 (USB 3.1 hub)
    • GIGABYTE GO-T3M.2 (M.2 SSD slots)
    • GIGABYTE GO-T3U.2 (U.2 SSD slots)
    • GIGABYTE GP-TBT3 Bay
(Not a dock. Adds a front Thunderbolt3 port to a desktop case via 5.25" bay.)
In this picture the dark windowed dock is shown with a 10GbE two-ported network card. A similar case has been shown with a GPU card before. Confusingly, it was also numbered GP-T3GFx.

One concern for the current vertical design, using the Silverstone case, is the location of the Thunderbolt3 port.
    • The port appears to be located at the top of the case just inside the cable opening.
    • This means it may be ~15in or ~38cm or so above the base. The plug points down, so the length of the plug is lost.
    • Dave2D's Razer Core review revealed (Yt, 01:37) that the active Thunderbolt3 cable Razer used is only about ~20in or ~50cm long, to avoid signal degradation.
    • This leaves only ~5in or ~12cm of cable to reach the laptop, assuming both are normally placed on the same surface. With diagonal routing a little more distance may be available. This may be enough to place it beside or behind the laptop, depending on what side of the laptop holds the TB3 port, but not much further.
    • (A desk with a shelf or stand at the right height below the desktop might be used if the laptop TB3 port is near the edge of the desk. The short cable would still limit the position of the laptop keyboard relative to the route of the cable through the desktop or around the edge.)
    (Some ideas:
    • Redesign or use it as a horizontal case. This loses its unique desk-space-saving feature.
    • Redesign or use it with the ports at the bottom. This might make it difficult to access the plugs and power switch.
    • Redesign it so it can oriented either end up. Then people who need more than ~5 inches of cable can stand it with the cable opening at the bottom. This may work best with a symmetric logo, or a logo on a door or panel that can be flipped or rotated.
    • Redesign it with the thunderbolt port on the outside. That will save a little cable when used on a desktop because it doesn't reverse direction to reach the laptop. It may have consequences for the signal paths on the circuitboard, however.
    )

well im not sure what the price is on the acer

but if it has a gpu that is the class of a 980 gtx now, maybe what might be called a 1060m it would be ideal

i think that the egpu is outside of optimus so it could power the vr headsets

eGPU compability issue: Apparently Thunderbolt3/TB3 eGPUs with a newer TI83 controller might require that the laptop BIOS approves the eGPU (listed in a BIOS whitelist), whereas the older TI82 controller did not. (Some TI83 eGPUs have firmware that overrides this restriction.)
    (Have I understood correctly?)

    TI82 Razor Core
    TI82 AKiTiO Thunder 3
TI83? PowerColor DevilBox eGPU firmware override
    TI83 Asus XG Station 2
TI83 AKiTiO Node eGPU firmware override
So buyers, who have or plan to purchase an eGPU with a TI83 controller without special override, will need the laptop brand to publish a list of which eGPU is approved for each laptop before they can plan to purchase the laptop.

Dell has said they will certify eGPUs for XPS laptops.

    LInk:
Dell will begin certifying XPS notebooks for external graphics: Frank Azor [by Black at Notebookcheck]
(more source links on that page.)

(Is this more FUD slowing the market and encouraging buyers to purchase from the same manufacturer for eGPU and laptop?
Or is this some sort of security feature? Can users edit the whitelist?)

    13R3 – GTX1060 dGPU / 13R3 – GTX1060 eGPU / XPS9365 – GTX1060 eGPU (akitio node)

    Unigine Valley 2,368 2,408 2,067
    Unigine Heaven 1,431 1,363 1,188
    Unigine Superposition 2,085 2,073 2,164
    3DMark Time Spy 3,537 3,677 3,507
    3DMark Fire Strike 11,326 11,005 9,292

Metro Last Night Redux 83 FPS 71 FPS 58
Rise of the Tomb Raider 54.28 FPS 47.83 FPS 43.13
    Tom Clancy’s The Division 49.9 FPS 40.8 FPS 39.1

so there is only a loss of fps between 20%(tom clancy/ rise of) and 30% (metro last) for dell 9365. i think it is a good result for a cpu like Intel Core i7-7Y75 1.3 GHz and without plug (only battery) :)

Thanks, but I know about these. I'm hoping the same guys from notebookcheck would do one so the results can be directly comparable.
