Hi, I am looking to buy the Vidock 4 plus. I was wondering if it will power an integrated display? Yes, I searched and found very conflicting claims. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Could you list your computer specs? What kind of graphics card are you planning on using?

    Hi, the specs are:
    Dell Precision M4700
Intel Core 3rd Generation i5-3320M Processor
    NVIDIA Quadro K1000M with 2GB GDDR3
Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit Operating System
    15.6 INCH UltraSharp FHD (1920x1080)
    4.0GB, DDR3-1600MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS

I'll be using my GTX 570.

Crap. That's not good. If it gives me any issues I'll probably sell it and then buy a GTX 670.

Do you know if I have to do any custom BIOS or is it just plug and play? Do you know if it'll work with the integrated display? Thank you.

No custom bios required, just plug and play as far as I know. You might have to disable the dGPU (K1000m) in device manager.

Some reports says boot in first and see; it might bluescreen. Other say let Windows boot up then plug in.

I'm tempted to buy one for my M6700 as I don't fancy upgrading my internal GPU as I still have 3 years warranty left.

The Vidock 4+ has a 320w power supply and a 570 has been successfully used with the older vidock with 225w, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. But if you were thinking of upgrading, I'd get a 660ti instead of a 670 just because of the expresscard 2.0 bottleneck. The difference of performance would essentially be nothing.

Your set-up seems to be plug and play. You would probably have to disable the dgpu but thats easy enough to do. And if you have error 12, you can always use the setup x.1 software.

Is there still 2 PSUs supplied to get the 320w? Before it was 150w + 75w PSU?

Is the 660TI the best we could hope for through the SC 2 port?

    Yeah there's a 120w and 200w.

By hope for do you mean strongest card given the bandwidth? Honestly even the 660ti would be too strong of a card, personally I will be purchasing a 660 just so its somewhat future proof and still has a nice bang for its buck.

Thanks everyone for the help! Really helpful. I'll update this when I commit to the purchase. Does anyone know it will power the integrated display? Say I wanted to travel and just bring the laptop and the vidock.

My setup works perfectly fine on the move. Brought just my macbook and vidock to my friends house and was gaming on the internal display no problem. Just make sure you have three wall plugs (two for the Vidock, one for the laptop). Good luck!

For internal screen you just need intel 4500mhd or newer, and nvidia optimus capable card (fermi or newer).

Okay, I think the M4700 has optimus with my K1000M so hopefully it works!

    Hi

I am thinking of buying the Vidock 4 Plus as well. It seems like the perfect option as I brought my laptop for £1600 back in 2009. It has served me very well over the years but is now getting a bit slow when playing games. I still want to get another good 3 years out of this laptop & I work away so am in hotels most nights which is why I cant build a desktop.

What I was wanting to know is if I will be able to use my laptop screen cause I don't want to be carrying a monitor around with me. I plan on using a GTX 660 as the external card. My system specs are as follows:

    Brand: Clevo
    Model: N980NU
Processor: Mobile Quad Core Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000
    Operating System: Windows 7 64bit
Memory: 4GB (Thinking of upgrading to 8GB)
    Chip Name: Nvidia MCP79
Display Adapter: Nvidia Geforce GTX 280M
Express Card Slots: 1 slot 2.0

    Any help would be good.

    Thanks
    Jimmy

It will work, but performance will be lower, an additional 10-20% performance penalty when using Optimus to send the signal back to the internal screen.
    I tested it before.
