Hi all,
I've already received a decent amount of help on the laptop forum regarding what model laptop to get with a dGPU and settled on a medion for around £800
with these specs:
Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM processor.
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium.
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX560M DirectX® 11 graphics.
750GB hard drive.
8GB RAM.
Now I noticed this seems the best place to talk eGPU's and they really interest me as I have the spare parts to put one together with a corsair 430x and a 6770 or should I get a GF 4xx. Obviously I will need the required cables but that brings me to my next question and the reason for the above specs!
How cost effective is this method? Would a eGPU + New laptop beat the above Medion Erazer on both cost and performance - so could I get a laptop + gfx card + eGPU kit for under the £800 the ready built costs. Furthermore from what I understand it seems better to aim for x2.0 which requires a certain type of laptop. I would want to buy the laptop that requires minimum modification. (I had looked at the recommended Levono x220 but it seemed fairly pricey for the specs).
I know this thread crosses into laptop discussion but due to its focus on eGPU's I figured this was the best place to capture the attention of those with the best knowledge of eGPU setups.
All the best and thanks for any advice in advance,
Ben.

If you are happy with it, then go for it.

I just need it to be able to play battlefield 3 every so often, I'm not very familiar with the 1.1 1.2 2.0 pcie stuff but I've heard some people having micro-lag. What kind of set up would I need to look at to be able to achieve this? -
You will be able to handle Battlefield 3 with no problem with a 560M GTX!
Specially if you have installed a 720p lcd on your laptop, like yours... -
Ok fair enough. But still I wouldn't mind hearing the advice of someone who has built one maybe if they wouldn't mind me pming them a few questions.

Have you looked into this thread?

eGPU doesn't seem worth the expense of it all. I would put that extra money into a better laptop.
