    Hello all,

I recently purchased an emachines E627 laptop.
    1.6 ghz TF-20 Single Core 64bit processor,
    2 gigs of ram
    160 hd.

I went on ebay and bought an TL-50 1.6 Dual core (Same Cache size) processor. And 2x 2gig sticks for a total of 4gigs of ram.

My question is, is it worth it to upgrade the processor? I have bought the new processor but then I've seen a disassembly video and it looks like alot of work. I'm pretty decent when it comes to assembling PC's and Xbox 360's (Assembled/Disassembled many times). I don't want to get the laptop apart only to not get it back together again. I think my feet are getting frosty.

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter? I like to watch .MKV files and would love to get some games on here also, but is it worth the trouble?

Thank you all for your time and thoughts on this matter! :D

Is it worth the trouble? Only you can answer that. If you're not sure, why not use the computer as is for a while?

I've posted some extensive info on upgrading the E627 in the Acer forum.
If you are careful, you can *safely* triple the performance with a TL60. You can overclock the TL50 roughly 200mghz. The increase in overall performance is substantial. You WILL want to make sure you use a good laptop cooler.

some more info. I've been experimenting with undervolting and overclocking the TL60. Currently I'm running at .8v and core cpu temp is currently 23.2 C as i type this. :) And this is the 35watt version of the 60.

I cannot say yes enough times. If you haven't performed this already, do so now. You will enjoy this laptop much more with the substantial improvement in performance. If you can disassemble/reassemble an Xbox, you can do the same with this laptop. The scariest part for me was seperating the plastic housing near the touchpad. The rest is honestly simple.

I posted in the Acer section as well, but can you give me a hand with what settings you used in RightMark to achieve these temps? I believe I have the same CPU you have used.

I've posted several times how I got it where it is now. Another member has given specific voltage rec's. do a forum search on "Seer" and you will find the link to a tutorial on how to use rmclock as well as my settings and techniques advice.
g'luck. The E627 is really a marvelous deal.

It *appears* that the E627 shares the same battery format as the 62* series. Check the specs for the other models in the family, the more expensive ones :) and see if they list a stronger battery.

Ok I pulled the tirgger and bought the emachine e627 and it came with win 7 home. Has anyone upgraded to win 7 business and were you able to do it through acer or emachines thru their upgrage program or did you have to buy the upgrade. Also looking at upgrading the wireless card to 802.11n nad is there any possibility of adding bluetooth. bought this laptop basically to have fun with and see what upgrades are possible. I know about the processor and undervolting thread in the acer section but haven't seen anything addressing the wifi card and bluetooth.

just saw this, on mine the wifi is "N" and I have it up and running on a Belkin N wifi router as I type this. I don't have any info on bluetooth for you as I don't use it since there is no built in microphone, I use the logitech usb headset for sound (which is beautiful btw). I've done a bit more *tuning* and in my final configuration as a *real world* example, I use it more often than I should to run two simultaneous instances of WOW (two accounts with one BIG char dragging around a smaller char to raise levels rapidly :) on wifi, with a two fan under unit laptop cooler, with the cpu punched up to 2295mhz, and my consistent temps range from 46C to 53 C depending on whether I'm in a raid or not.

Frankly I think its the best laptop buy I've ever seen or heard of.

    Seer.

    Seer,

One last question have you considered a blu-ray player for this notebook? If so which one.

No sense putting 7 Pro on it AT ALL unless you get a processor capable of virtualization. Unless you really need the network expandability. A processor that cannot virtualize can't run the XP compatibility mode anyway. The 2650e/TL-20 can't do that as it is a single core processor.

The processor that I would be using with windows 7 pro would be the tl-60.

Marv, I'm not into blueray, and to be frank almost never use the dvd. A couple of 16 gig thumb drives, and I havn't looked back. I do *have* a big sony unit hooked up to the tower, but its an early unit, way too expensive, and I'm sure there are better options out there now.

Seer, thanks for getting back to me, the thumb drive is not a bad option but I prefer not to have something sticking out of my computer when I'm on the road traveling. The e627 is now my netbook since I've gotten rid of my gateway e-100m. I appreciate all your replies to my post but I think for me, I will continue to look into the blu-ray option. If you can think of anything else to do to this puppy that you already haven't discuss please feel free to enlighten me. Once again thanks I've enjoyed reading what you've done so far.
