my son bought a Gateway E-machines from Best Buy, about 4 months ago. It needs a new headphone jack (piece broke off in the jack).

Best Buy wants to replace Mother Board ($382) to fix Headphone jack.

Is this really necessary or is Best Buy scamming him? How do I fix it?

Depending on the models, one should be able to replace the circuit board that controls the audio/mic - but it requires soldering and buying the part, which sometimes can be hard to find.

Take it apart, look at it and decide.

    cheers ...
