I've got an M6805 that's caused me nothing but grief. When I try to install a 64-bit OS (either XP64 or the Longhorn Preview) the system does a hard freeze right after it reboots into graphical mode (you get through the DOS-mode stuff, it reboots, says "Installation will complete in 39 minutes..." and KABOOM!).

I know that people have gotten XP64 up-and-running on stock M6805s, but I'm wondering if there's some kind of pre-install flashing or updating that people have done? Any thoughts? eMachines support, of course, says "Use XP Home and be happy."

    Thanks in advance!

I got my M6805 yesterday morning and I installed windows xp pro 64 beta build 18** right after. The installation went on very quickly and Windows loaded with no problem whatsoever.

It installed all drivers properly, except for video (I had to download 64 bit ati drivers) and wireless, which does not have drivers yet.

The computer froze sometimes when unplugging the lan cable. Other than that it run ok..

After noticing how undeveloped 64-bit drivers are, I decided to go xppro 32, which I'm running now with no problems.

However, when I installed SP2, the computer started freezing sporadically. I uninstalled it and left it with SP1. Now it is working like a charm and very fast.

I then concluded that since windows xp 64 appears to have SP2 built in, it's very crappy. I remember several cases where Windows betas would not work on some of my machines but then the final release would...

There's not much advantage to 64-bits yet due to lack of 64bits apps and drivers, so don't worry about it too much. XP 64 will apparently be released late december..

If you want to experience 64 bits, go for a linux 64bit compilation... which I will do some time next week.
