i have installed the final release of xp sp2.the problem is when i remove the ac power, the laptop freezes. this has only happened in sp2 and hasn't happened before when i had sp1 installed. this has happened to me and someone else with the exact same laptop as me. i have an emachines m6805. i'm not sure if it's strictly a mobile athlon64 bit processor problem or an emachines problem. does anyone else have this problem? also, who should i contact about this? microsoft? emachines?

    Hi wenhan,
I would let both microsoft & eMachines know about the problem.
I have been reading about SP2 and even downloaded it, but I think it may be a week or two until I try it as I want to see what issues arise like yours( there seems to be lots of notebook related problems with SP2 and I think most beta testers were on desktop machines)I've read that you can uninstall SP2, if I were you I would uninstall it until they figure out your problem as well as the other notebook isues that are popping up each day.

Should be pretty good where they get it right though[ ;)]

I had the same problems as you originally, but I was able to fix it by flashing the original BIOS on my M6807 to the new M6811 BIOS posted on http://www.rmecc.com/~v2/em/index.html (0F07.P00 dated 5-20-04) and now it works great!

I installed SP2 on my m6811 and have no problems. Everything seems to be working like it should.

The m6805 is affected by the same problems. Upgrading the BIOS does fix it.

The only system that seems to be affected with this problem is the M6807. eMachines offers a BIOS download if you contact them to rectify the problem.

The M6809 is definitely not affected (I can personally vouch for that!), and I have heard that there are no issues with the M6805 either.

That wasn't me that was having the problems in that thread. I am an m6809 owner. FWIW, I did run RC1 and RC2 of SP2 with no problems. I feel plenty secure running beta software as I have the knowledge to fix any problems that may arise. I also make a ghost image before installing such a large beta.

The newer posts were all from users using the final release that still had the same problem. All of the problems were resolved by flashing to the m6809 or m6811 BIOS.

And yes, the ones that were working in the second thread were those that had already upgraded to the m6809 BIOS. The BIOS was "available" before SP2, but not officially from eMachines. They do not make their BIOS releases publicly available. FWIW, I personally choose to run the m6811 BIOS so I can access the PowerNow! tab in my power properties.

Just to confirm from direct experience with the M6805. I upgraded the bios to the M6811, installed the Omega video drivers, took a ghost image, and then upgraded with final version. Everything worked smoothly. Have also had great success with the download of the PowerNow version from AMD (see sticky thread if you haven't read it), in order to keep the machine running >= 1800 clockspeed before tweaks.

    good luck!

    Hello all,

I have an m6805 (one of the first off the line) I have flashed it with the m6811 (0f07.p00) bios but it still reboots continuously after installing SP2. Thanks to The Inquirer (and them pointing out this KB article I found that I could boot to safe mode and put mpegport.sys in the exceptions list for DEP (NX bit) and solve the problem.

I have not seen anyone else with this issue. Is there something else (besides flashing the bios) that I am missing?

Any and all help would be appreciated -- I hate work arounds.

You could disable DEP. There is one problem with DEP that software makers need to patch for. This is not an MS or DEP problem, but a software problem. Certain programs are specifically written to write directly to certain memory areas. This can cause havoc with DEP. I personally haven't ran into any problems yet, but this is the source of many of the problems.

It seems that AMD's Powernow hack for XP was what was causing me grief (continueous reboots after installing SP2). I had to add the Powernow! service (can't remember the filename -- but you can find it by pulling up the service's properties) to the DEP exceptions list.

I _KNOW_ I can't be the only one that had this problem. Anyone, anyone, Buhler, Buhler?

My Powernow tab has disappeared after I installed SP2. M6811 is still switching speeds correctly based on CPU load, AC and DC, but I can't force it fast or slow. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled PowerNow, to no avail. Any suggestions?

Well, eMachines tech support has been the bane of many a forum writer. Doesn't look like that will change any time soon.

I don't recall when, but I *did* call eMachines shortly after Service Pack 2 went RTM (I believe it was the following week) and I don't recall who I talked to (*shoots self for not writing down badge number*)

He said that the standard practice was to uninstall Service Pack 2. I explained to him that I was a techie, and had played with it, and many people online had flashed their BIOS to a newer version, and that fixed the problem. Previously eMachines tech support had believed it to be a software problem within SP2. I told him, "No, you guys have the fix...its on the new machines, just release the BIOS update for the older machines with the machine tag (each model has the M6805/07/09/10/11 tag in it...hence the restore disks will only work with your model's tag on it) and the problem would go away.

He did tell me that that was an unrecommended solution, and I agreed with him, as I didn't want to void my 3-year warranty, so I was passing the information discovered by those that did, so that eMachines could make it a normal update for everyone, thus fixing the problem.

He said that he was intruged by this, and would pass it on to his supervisors for review. So *hopefully* they listened, and fix this.

I should call in now, it's been well over a month...
