After a delivery mishap yesterday (they dropped the middle number of my address) I finally got my P7010D. I went with 1.2ghz / 768MB / 7200 rpm / DVD-RAM and the scroll button (no fingerprint). Here are a few initial impressions from doodling around with it for 45 minutes.
- It's not as light as I had hoped. I need to weigh it on a scale to find how it weighs in. My lack of experience with other recent laptops contributes to this impression, no doubt.
- Similarly, the screen hasn't blown me away. It looks fine -- but that's it. Text is perfectly legible for me.
- It's also distressingly dusty. I can move the dust around with tissues, but will need to find a real cleaning solution soon. Especially for future fingerprint accidents.
- Size is good, though again, could be smaller! (Guess I'm hard to blow away.)
- The physical build seems good. It feels solid. The lid closes very nice and securely -- the lack of clasp should not be a problem. Still, I will always be a bit worried about breakage when carrying this thing in my backpack. Guess it's the fact that it has a HDD.
- Good speed and responsiveness. No complaints at all so far. I want to install Unreal Tournament '99, Wizardry VIII and some doujin shooters later for benchmarks.
- Touchpad is great so far. I'm surprised at how well the built-in vertical scrolling works. The number of options in the software is excellent.
- On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of the placement of the touchpad buttons and scroll rocker. Unfortunately, my rocker seems a little defective -- up is no problem, but down requires a significant amount of pressure to activate. Given how well the pad-based scrolling works, I'm not sure I want to waste the energy having Portable One replace this. What do you think? If you have the rocker, does down work as well as up?
- The keyboard is fine! I can type quite fast on it right out of the box. Only annoying thing so far is the period key.
- I was fully resigned to having to format the HDD and install my own, barebones version of XP. But surprisingly, this thing doesn't have a whole lot of junk installed. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to go with the factory install, which is a first for me.
- Speaking of the HDD, it only comes up as 55 GB. Is that normal for a 60 GB drive, or is there a hidden partition I need to nuke?
That's about it for now. I've got a ton of work to do, so I won't get to play with it in earnest for a few days. Hopefully my wireless networking setup will have arrived from Newegg by then.

hey bent,
congrats on your purchase!
one of the things i really like about the fujitsus is that they don't come pre-loaded with a whole bunch of useless crap/software on them.[]
sorry to hear the unit isn't small enough for you tho []I've only seen a p7010 in person once, and i couldn't believe just how tiny it was.

A 60 gig should show as a 55.8 gig, courtesy of marketing definition of what 1 gig means ... 1G = 1,000,000,000 Bytes, while in reality 1G should be 1,073,741,824 Bytes!
So you lose 4+ gigs!

Oh, one more thing on the weight, I don't think it's bad at all, even with two batteries, but you can ditch the DVD drive to save a little.

My new P7 came today as well. I'll be posting a review and comparison with the prior model. I'm a big fan, already see a performance boost over the other one and I don't even have all the RAM in yet.

Thank you, michae42!
Brian, my expectations for the weight were probably too high. Or uh, low.
Anybody else have a sticky scroll rocker? I thought I'd simply use the working up-rocker for a middle-click, but it seems that is not an option in the pad software. You can make the L and R buttons middle-clicks, but not the rocker. -
I don't have the rocker, haven't since the old P5000 series. I actually really like the biometrics after getting used to them.

Oddly enough, the feel of the busted down button changed last week, and it's no longer near-impossible to push. It still requires too much effort to effect input, but I'll just chalk that up to poor design. It's really not very good in feel or placement. Luckily, the scrolling functionality of the touchpad more than picks up the slack. Alas, the software doesn't seem to let you assign special events (like program launches) to the rocker switch, so I guess it will go unused.
In other news, this laptop rocks. I think it's my new best friend. -
Glad to hear you're still happy with it. I should be getting one too sometime towards the end of summer. Hopefully I'll catch the price drop of the intel PMs scheduled for july!
How much battery life are you getting out of it? and on which brightness level? I am curious to know if I'll be needing the modular battery, I think I would need it to run 5-6 hrs per day (ie per one charge) and hopefully at something above min brightness. No way will I carry the power adapter with me between home, 2 university campuses, and a lab that I might be working at some 1+ hr out of the city on public transportation!

I think you'll want the extra battery. I kinda do. I don't have it and estimate I get something over four hours, but not much more. (Very unscientific.) Screen is usually around half-brightness. I run SpeedSwitchXP to keep the CPU speed variable and have as many power-saving settings enabled as I can find -- even toggled one in the BIOS.
One thing I noticed is that even when I'm on AC power I don't like to keep the CPU speed maxed at 1200mhz because that tends to make the system louder even when it idles. I guess I'll only crank it up to its full potential for 3D games. -
I like the extra better a lot...I'll post metrics when I do the full review of the P7000. I'm finishing the Panasonic W2 review first.
