My logic is Windows XP likes 512 otherwise it does excessive paging (swapping) so I chose 768 to account for the shared video memory and leave me at least 512 meg left over. If there is a vid mem aperature setting in the bios I will choose the bigger of available options. Even though I won't be gaming with this thing, surfing itself can be graphically intensive.

The thing stopping me from going higher was price. I could swing an extra $85, yet an additional $200 to 1 gig seemed excessive. Plus how usefull is that extra ram except for bragging rights if you will generally have no more than 3 programs running concurrently.

Thanx, I had 512 w/ this rig, and i took 256 from my old rig. Now the old crawls, so I have to put it back :( which is sad. Let see, I spent quite a fortune with this notebook, will probably wait a while before i buy a 256 stick.

I am fine with 512, but sometimes I go into excessive swapping after using some heavy programs. But that happens few tims that I found it ridiculous to pay for the price of 2x512 (currently I have 2x256, and I need 2 identicle modules for dual channel operation).

My most usage is having some programming application open (usually MatLab) with some webpages (firefox), with a couple of PDFs, and ontop of that word, where I am typing a report or something, and winamp in the backgrnd playing some tunes. And I see no swapping when flipping between the different apps.

If my work becomes more RAM intenssive or the upgrade becomes too cheap to not get, then...

Hey qwester, get Opera, I've been using it for a while, it's better than Firefox.
