After a lot of searching :decision:, I think I've decided to get the Fujitsu S2110, mainly because of its weight, size, and battery life. :fujitsu:

    I had some questions:

    1) One of the reviews mentioned that the fan runs 80% of the time--is this fan quiet or loud (subjectively speaking)? I can't stand noisy fans. :noisyfan:

    2) Considering buying options, I saw in this forum that Fujitsu would offer a student discount (5%)--even with this price, however, newegg is about $100 cheaper. Still, I would prefer to order from P1 because I've heard good things about their customer service and the dead pixel guarantee is something I really consider a must. Does P1 offer any student (or other) discounts?

    3) I'm thinking about the three-year warranty option. I wanted to know what is considered user upgradeable inside the warranty--specifically, the hard drive and memory.

    4) Can anyone recommend a good leather case (with shoulder strap) that would be just right for a 13.3" screen?

    Thanks for the input.

I took the dive into a new s2110 from P1 not long ago. You are getting a very nice computer. Specific responses to your questions:

    1. Quiet. I too am a big fan of the quiet fan (bad pun intended). While it does run a lot, it is very quiet. The only time I really notice it is in a silent room, and even then it is fine. For perspective - if I am encoding video, my fan is barely louder than my hard drive, and that is as loud as I've ever heard it.

    2. No student discount, but P1 is still the way to go. No dead pixel guarantee is nice, and P1 is just great service. Plus, P1 gives you $50 off, because of the free hard drive upgrade (you can change it to a 40 gb and the price will only be 1249). And free shipping + no tax outside CA really levels the playing field against NewEgg.

    3. I know the memory is upgradeable, and the hard drive is too as far as I know, though I'd keep the old one around just in case. I really doubt P1 would care though. And definitely go for the warranty - $100 is worth a couple years piece of mind.

    4. If you want a sleeve, go with sfbags.com. They can do any size you can ask for, they make it right in the USA, and the sleeve itself is great (shoulder strap and pouch are available). Mine fits like a glove and is light but durable. They are a little more expensive than something you will find at Walmart, but that's what American made quality is worth. I figure that a $1300 computer deserves more than a $20 bag.

I too am very interested in the S2110, and in response to your post, did some more searching and comparing of P1\Fujitsu page. P1 is by far the way to go price wise, hands down. Even with a student discount (which would apply to me as well), P1 is still cheaper.

And to compliment what CM said above me, the Waterfield bags are really, really nice. My teacher has one, and it protects his laptop (a 14 incher) really well, and it just looks really nice...which is nice since the 2110 looks nice as well :)

Fujitsu is very picky about hard drive upgrades. It is completely doable, but I would hold onto the old one in case you have to throw it back for service. You can throw in a acase for extra storage or backups. P1 is the way to go in my opinion. It is cheaper at NewEgg, but they require seven dead pixels for an exchange. Plus you can customize at P1. Good Luck.

actually you can get a student discount thru P1 but you will have to give up on any other offers which P1 is giving at the time. Which usually ends up not such a good deal.

and about the warranty. With fujitsu you don't have to purchase the warranty directly. you can upgrade to 3 years anytime within your first year for the same price, just thought you might like to know

From multiple sources....upgrading the HD on your own does void you warranty, Fujitsu does not consider the HD "user upgradeable". Therefore, make sure to keep the old one and put it back in if you ever need to ship it to Fujitsu.
