I installed a wireless RF mouse driver (used mostly to check battery level) and as a result, the touchpad scroll buttons will not work. This happens with the USB RF reciever plugged in or not.

uninstalled the RF mouse driver-
ran the add hardware wizard-
updated the drivers for USB, mouse Alps pointing device-
everything works now-
Off to Logitech in search of a better driver... -
