Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum and I've jumped into the deep end. Here it goes...

Yesterday evening, I tried to start up my laptop but it got stuck on the "Fujitsu Siemens" start screen (with the option of changing boot devices or priorities). I restarted about 5 or 6 times, but to no avail. I then changed the boot priorities to CD/DVD and used the Bootable System Restoration disc for booting up, again, to no avail.

On listening carefully, I heard the HDD buzzing. I decided to remove the HD and see if the system booted up on the CD. It did.

Now my questions. Do I go out and buy a hard disk outright? Or do I buy a SATA/USB convertor cable and verify the Hard Disk? Or there is another way of solving this problem? Could it be the SATA controller? I sincerely think (and hope) not?

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks,
    Sami

Edit: I've had the laptop for about a year and a half now. I bought it in February 2006.

It seems like your hard drive is dead. You can try it in an external hard drive case to be sure. But I would go out and buy a new one actually.

Replies appreciated. I'm using Windows XP Home that was supplied with the laptop. It has been about 2 months since I re-installed Windows. I think I'll be ordering a new hard drive today.

    Thanks!
    Sami.

No problem. Make sure you buy the right hard drive: 2.5" SATA hard drive for notebooks. Not 3.5" or IDE.

    Good luck. :)

LOL! Yes yes! I bought a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 100 GB SATA drive . The original was a Momentus 5400.2. So I decided to upgrade a bit in terms of drive technology. Also that this drive has PMR. Will see if it makes a difference in terms of speed. I thought about going for a Momentus 7200.1 120 GB, but it was a bit more expensive and I decided to stay near original. Battery life is not very strong as it is, so I didn't want to compromise it further either.

Installations done, adding softwares one by one as needed.

    Again, thanks for the help

    Cheers!
