I received Fujitsu Amilo D7830 for free. This laptop is made in 2004 I think so it is not a speed demon, it uses desktop 478 processors (Pentium 4-M should also be OK but it does not support Speedstep) and currently has Celeron 2GHz.
As far as I know, this laptop should support Northwood processors running at 400 and 533 FSB. I tried to put Pentium 4 2.66GHz which runs at 533MHz and it was difficult to get the machine to boot with it, only after several installation attempts I managed to get the machine to boot, and even then, only every second time. The machine seems to start but it resets after it has loaded to bios first time and then loads successfully to XP and works normally. If I restart the machine from XP, no problem. Only after power has been down it needs two attempts. I did put the old Celeron back and problem disappeared.
After that I found a pin mod for 400MHz FSB processors, by removing pin AD6 I should be able to overclock this Celeron 2GHz to 2.66GHz. I did clip the pin but the machine still boots with 400MHz FSB and 2GHz even though it should not be possible? Has this particular model some limitation for 533MHz since even genuine 533MHz CPU causes problems? One thing which came in mind is to change bios battery, I bet it is the original battery from 2004, maybe that is causing problems? The main battery is also completedly dead, when Googling I found out threads where someone said this laptop should not even boot without working batteyr.. weird.
