    No,

DVD drives are not unlocked, under system properties you have the option of switching the region setting a few times (depending on the manufacturer).

It is possible to unlock the DVD drive with unofficial firmware updates. Flashing your drive may damage it and you will certainly void your warranty.

I couldn’t find the DVD-RW brand for the S7010D; I assume that fujitsu will use different brands, depending on the deals they get for bulk orders.

Hope I could help you a little.

Most DVD drives and players are dvd regions locked(RPC2) to avoid the law suit. But many can be flashed w/ hacked firmware or running special software to allow reading cross-region DVD. sometime a hacked firmware will not be available for months/years, or forever. Not to memtion, flashing firmware can void your warranty, or worse, render your equipment useless. So running a special software is a safest way, but not the most convenience way. especially on laptop DVD burner, I wouldn't flash the firmware unneccessary, unless I have to.

I just rcvd my S7010D this week. It is supposed to have the Super Multi DVD+-/RW drive, but the drive is being identified by my Device Manager as a DVD-RAM drive, Matsushi(t)a UJ-820S. I pulled the drive out and it is labled Panasonic UJ-820B. I researched that and found it to be a Super Multi DVD+-/RW drive, so I tried burning a RW+ disk and it worked perfectly.

I was concerned about future driver/firmware upgrades and want it properly recognized by my system.

I wrote Fujitsu, and their answer was ... "I do not have an answer as to why our DVD Super-Multi drive shows as just a DVD Ram in the system. I can however, let you know that this is normal on our systems. All of our Lifebooks with the same Multi drive have it show with that heading. You should not run into any problems as a result of the title that is assigned to it in the system. When you use the drive it adjusts automatically to the format of the disk in the drive. The DVD+RW/-RW drive is released and produced by Panasonic but the internal programming and drivers are made by Matsushi(t)a."

So, if you are supposed to have the Super Multi drive - then it is the above noted "brand".

    Ohhh ~~~ I see now ~ Thanx guys! [ :)]

Hey ~88 ~ I'm getting a S7010D next week just like ur configuration! It's a good price getting it from New Zealand, the retail price for a S6130 is $3847 NZ dollar, it's about $2564 US dollar.. which I'm getting mine S7010D for $2119 US including the shipping, and it's about $3178 NZ dollar, which is alot cheaper than getting one in NZ. Hehehe ~~ I will place my order next week and tell you guys about it once I've got it ^^

Oh ~88, does your one has the "mushy" keyboard problem? And are there any dead pixels?

    Cheers man ~ [ :D]

um ... keyboard! Yes - you will most likely think it's mushy. Definitely a lot more flex and give, than most. I am determined to get used to it. For a lappy this light weight - most have a low voltage pentium 1.0 and a slow hard drive - so other than my desire for a 9600/9700 vid card - this lappy is feature rich for its size. I'm determined to keep it and just get used to the annoying things about it.

Most annoying -- there are no LEDS. I like status lights. There are none. There is a status bar, and icons appear in it to indicate hard drive access, caps on, etc. But, you can't see it unless you lean over the keyboard, so if it's dark - its not easily visible. Really bugs me. And of course the home and end keys have to be hit in conjuction w/the function key -- rediculous!

The first day the palm rest was always hot, and the fan came on a lot and had the strangest noise. I decided not to do any tweaking. I noticed the next day, and since, it runs a lot cooler and the fan hardly comes on. No dead pixels.

You paid a decent price. I paid $2490. I got the 3 year U/G + XP-Pro. 'Jus really wished it had some nice lights!

Mmm.... I wish there are nice leds too... don't know why fujitsu designed the status screen instead of the leds...

Despite those annoying things... it's light and slim with reasonable performance, I think I can live with those funny issues when I got them and get used to it, and hoping it will last me for the next 4 years without any upgrades (This is my ver FIRST laptop tho!!!).

Oh ~~ another thing ~ I have Win XP Pro Traditional Chinese Version, I'll install it once I got it. Will the system act differently or strange if I run XP in different language? Just wondering about it.

you may not need to reinstall XP for that reason, you could also just add the language to existing XP.

88, where did you get the Laptop from. The configuration you listed goes for a lot more on Laptopsinc.com. I didn't know there was a vendor that could beat their prices on Fujitsus....

I got it from Portable One, a.k.a. laptopsinc. You're right, nobody can beat their price. However, mine is a 1.7 banias - that's why it's a couple hundred bux less. The day after I ordered it - it was no longer offered. Only the dothans 1.7 are available. It took about 2 weeks to get it - shipped from Japan to San Jose, they upgraded my ram, hard drive, OS, and then shipped it to me. I'm still waiting on the port rep to arrive.

Oh.. umm... I need to use Traditional Chinese Xp pro becoz some software are in chinese and has to be run under same language system, otherwise the characters wont' show properly [V][V]... so I guess I'll have to reinstall and make my partitions again ~ but thats not a very big deal.. I just need to make sure it runs properly under diff language. In theory it would work just like desktops eh?! I'm not sure for the laptops tho...

um, weird. I'm Thai. But I use the XP English version, add Thai language and fonts(note that they are not one and the same). Then change the system fonts to match it. I would rather do that if that's the only thing I need. But, I'll be installing gentoo, plus repartition, so, might as well be format&reinstall windows too.
