Okay gang, for those of you that own a S6231, how often would you say your fan turns on while using the notebook? And when it does turn on, what kinds of activities/programs are you running?

Ever since I sent my notebook in for repair, I'm getting the sense that my fan is turning on more than usual. For instance, I could have sworn when I first bought the notebook the fan never turned on when I was surfing the net, but now after a few mintues of surfing it seems to kick on. Normal or not? I was hoping to get some feedback from you guys before I give tech support a call.

    Thanks in advance!

Mine is on frequently, but it's going at such a slow rate, I can barely hear it.

It is hard to say that it is a problem since I don't know what kind of website you went. Some website may cause you fan turn on if it requires a lot of hardware power to run. However, my fan never turn on when I go on internet. The only time my fans turn on is when I try to play high graphic games since the graphic card sucks in S6231.

I've got a 1.6 ghz, 1 GB RAM, 7200 RPM Hard Drive, Win XP Pro.....

when I first bought it, the fan never increased in speed, so hardly ever heard it...now it seems to bump up after about 10-15 mintues of internet use!!!

I have minimal programs running in the backgroud...do you guys think I should give tech support a call??

also, I have windows xp set to portable/laptop, if that makes a difference.

I have almost the same specs as your S6231, nesbo. Just running win2k instead. :) I've also noticed that the fans in my S6231 were coming on more frequently than when I purchased it, but I'm primarily attributing the increase to changes in ambient temperatures. Summer is quite hot here :) The other slight increase occurred when I changed the standard 4200 rpm hd with the 7k60.

Anyways, one thing I've found helpful in reducing the times that the fan comes on involves undervolting the cpu. The forum post I originally looked at how to do this is located at:

    http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=70943

This is a software controlled change to your computer, but as always everything is done at your own risk. Instead of using RMClock as suggested by the original poster, I'm using Centrino Hardware Control. That program can be found at:

    http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm

So far, I have my S6231 running stable on battery at 600 mhz at 0.700V and on AC at 1600 mhz at 0.972V.

Often a computer gets dirty software wise, as windows accumulate crap over time. It's not always a hardware problem. Try to format your comp.

That's the truth. Even though I got an S6231 to replace a Toshiba Satellite 1005-S157 I'm using the toshiba just as much simply for testing. And now I've raised the bar even higher before installing something on my S6231. It's not good enough for something to work, I have to find myself actually using a piece of software for it to get approval for installation on the fujitsu. Often times there are good programs out there worth a look, but only get used once. Last night I was testing out codecs trying to get audio to work on dvd rips that use ac3 for audio. There are so many beta versions, release candidates, codec packs, that a testing computer really comes in handy to figure out which is actually going to work.
