I'm not sure which HD you Amilo has...if it's WD try to use Data Lifeguard Diagnostic:
    http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3

Use the DOS version if the Win one freezes before the end of test...burn it on a CD and reboot

Every major hard disk manufacturer has similar software for diagnostics and so on...try find it on the homepage of your manufacturer.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply i have a seagate hard drive i loaded up the seagate seatools for dos and did the following tests:

Short Test (Dont ask me what it done or ment to do) lol
    Long Test,
    Zero Eraze,
Full Eraze (I think that was some kind of low level format)

    All Tests Passed.

I now have windows xp on here and it seems ok so far *touch wood*.

Would like to know a little more about xp and vista i found it odd that xp was playing up, but everything is working fine with vista installed?

you know whats funny? It was nothing to do with the hard drive at all.

It was the mini pci wifi card that was installed in the laptop it was the one that came with it :s i tryed another i had but that just did the same.

So i took it out altogether, im useing USB WiFi and now its fine cost me an unnecessary £44 as i had gone out and got a 120GB hard drive.

    Problem now sorted :D
