After searching for the perfect laptop for almost a year, I stumbled upon the S6210 and thought I was THE thing. But after reading this board for a while I discovered one thing, the S6210 we have in Canada is a downgraded version of the US one, it has DDR 266 memory instead of 333 and you can only get 4200RPM HDD.

Sure I could buy from the states, but it'll cost me an arm and a leg since I won't benefit from the nice discount I have at my work place (which only buy from a distributor who buys from fujitsu canada).

I know you guys can<t do anything about it, but I just wanted to share my frustration with you.

    Thanks
    Rig

Ya, for some reason Fujitsu screws Canadians. I have no idea why, but will make sure to ask them next time we have a talk. Hopfully you guys will find a good source up there.

Last month, I bought a S6210 from Notebook Outlet (notebookoutlet.ca) in Markham. I got 768MB RAM, 5K40 HD, XPPro, 3 yr Warranty, with MS Office SBE 2003 OEM. I had to ask for it specially, but they quoted me a competitive package price. The folks there are helpful, technically competent, and clearly well-meaning; but not used to handling special orders. It took phone calls and visits to work through issues getting the right version of MS Office. In the end, I'm happy with the purchase.

Im sure they have the same mobo in there as in the US version just cheaper ram. Why dont you get some nice Corsair XMS ddr333 512mb ram ($120). Or just get some regular ddr333 ram($80). Its cheap and will give you a good performance boost.

That is pretty messed up for Fujitsu to screw over another country who has customers all over the world. For harddrives you can always change it on your own, but for the memory, that kinda sucks since you can't support DDR333. How much are they selling the S6210 over there in Canada anyways?

Would the slower RAM and HD really hurt this notebook? ie, would there be a noticeable difference?

Also, let's say that a Canadian did buy the American version from an American vendor--would the warranty still be valid for the Canadian?

The RAM speed is minor, the HDD more noticable when loading large programs or during boot up. But neither will really be noticed day to day, like email reading, browsing, etc.

As for the warranty, I don't know and don't want to guess and be wrong. Go ahead and call Fujitsu sales to ask them.
