Hi folks,
I'm wondering if it's possible to output video from my laptop to my tv via S-VIDEO. Software or driver?

The answer is yes. You may want to fool around with a few MPEG decoders (Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc.) which are software applications that send a decompressed digital signal to the DAC (digital to analog converter) located on the video card for output to the analog S-Video port.
If you want to get real serious, you can use something like a Hauppauge MediaMPV (http://www.hauppauge.com/html/mediamvp_datasheet.htm) which has its own MPEG decoder (hardware based) plus the benefit of running Cat5 vs. S-Video cable between laptop and TV (think longer runs, less signal loss). The other option would be to use the N6010's VGA port if your TV has monitor capabilities (VGA in).
One of the above - you need to experiment - will likely work better on your particular TV than the others.
Frankly this is one area where the Toshiba Qosmio outshines the N6010. Not only does it have DVI (for digital TVs) but since it runs Windows Media Center 2005, a Qosmio owner can use the Media Center Extender which is similar to the MediaMPV except it also works (not well) over a wireless network (of course you could also try to attach the MediaMPV to a Wi-Fi radio adapter). On the other hand, keeping a laptop constantly connected to a TV (toward which the Qosmio's feature set seems inclined) is a little retarded since this completely negates the form factor. -
what would be the real difference with having Windows Media Center as opposed to just having Windows XP Pro when it comes to tv recording and transferring to DVD. I do make backup copies of my DVD's now using DVDecrypter and DVDShrink and Nero?
Any tips or feedback on this beauty as far as the above is concerned? -
to answer your question gee, media center offers no worthwhile advantages. just install sagetv and you'll be better off. i'd MUCH perfer an install of SageTV in regular XP to media center. both add a front end & PVR functions but Sage is more customizable and can do much more.
with it you can launch dvd decrypter & rip dvds, burn your shows to dvd or even batch encode to divx without getting out of your chair. auto commercial advance too
