I'm having a problem getting Norton Ghost 2003 to back up on my Fujitsu Xi 1546 (I've had no problems running this on my Dell D800). The program installs and runs fine in Windows XP, the problem begins running a backup.

Windows will restart as expected, and the DOS screen arrives giving you the choice to Run Norton Ghost or return to Windows. After choosing to run Norton Ghost... nothing happens. I have to manually reset the computer and return to Windows.

I am able to return to DOS then run the ghost.exe program which opens up the DOS version of Ghost. However, this can't see my external USB 2.0 harddrive. I have backed up to the second internal harddrive, but this isn't really a long-term solution.

Has anybody had similar problems or have any ideas. If not, finally can anybody suggest other drive imaging software? I've read in lots of places that Ghost 2003 is one of the best options, as it backs up in DOS whereas other programs and even later versions of Ghost try to back up in Windows, which understandably can cause problems trying to back up an operating system that is running at the same time.

Thanks for any help. I'll try to write a review of the Fujitsu Xi1546, I have the Core 2 Duo T7200 processor and it's an absolute beast !!

Okay, I'm putting up a new thread with benchmarks right now. Let me know if you want any other info for the moment. I was hoping to write a full review, but need to find the time.

If anyone has any ideas on the Ghost 2003 problem I'd love to hear them.

    Cheers

You probably have solved your problem by now but for the benefit of others viewing, Ghost 2003 will not work with SATA drives. You need a newer version.

    Hi Mookoo,

Thanks for your comments. In fact, I never managed to solve the problem and hadn't had too much time to look into another backup option, so thanks for the heads up about SATA drives.

Can you suggest something similar to Ghost 2003 ? My only concern is I've heard newer versions of Ghost may not be as good as they do "live" backups, ie. they backup Windows from Windows (as compared to Ghost 2003 which reboots into DOS to make the backup). Hopefully somebody here can recommend software that they've successfully used to backup and restore their new Fuji ?

    Cheers,
