I normally get 3-4 hours with screen on full brightness and wireless on and active. If you turned off wireless and reduced screen brightness, you could probably get twice as much life.

I also get 3-4 hours on the main battery, and over 7 with the modular bay battery. And I'm running the screen at max brightness, wireless on, running Word, Mozilla, and playing music.

Hey, ya know battery life is one of my prime considerations. But I came across this Toshiba Centrino 15" "W"-XGA with Centrino 1.4M and you get 3+hrs with reg batt, adn 7hrs+ with $150 batt = 10hrs! Pretty compact for how much realestate you get, and 6.2lbs. See my recent post in "Toshiba" section.

I too love Netflix and I know a number of people that I work with do too. I've not yet copied a DVD to the notebook, but have been contemplating the move for the same reasons you note. I think it will take les battery to spin the HDD than the DVD and the quality should be the same.

    speaking of battery life:

im considering getting a p5000 series, and i will eventually use the dvd for a trip or two, but on a trip i think the modular bay will get filled with a second battery.

so, heres the question. lets say you dont want to tote along both the dvd player and a modular battery. have any of you had ripped a dvd and played it back from the hard disk? would this also improve battery life? is reading a hard disk more efficient than reading a dvd?

i subscribe to netfix so i could actually take a dvd along for a trip, but is this ripping idea any good? as an aside, netflix i found is the best thing in film addiction. i bought a tivo and record the dvds at the end of the week if i havent had time to watch them. in nyc i get my new selections within three days of mailing. its been a fast turn-around in this locale.

Anybody have any recommendations on a simple (cheap) way to rip DVDs to the HD? I've tried several and haven't found one I really liked.

Maybe this should be another thread, eh?[ :p]

yeah you should make it into another thread, because I'm looking for the same thing! Something I could just pop a DVD in, open the program, click RIP and have it rip a nice file with ease.
