Hello.
I'm thinking of getting an S6210, but key for me is how loud the fan is.
Basically, with the music work I do, I would need for the fan to either not run very often, or just to not be noisy.
I've read mixed things on the noise emitted by the fan in this computer.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

I think the fan in the S6210 is a permanent magnet motor, and is pretty heavy duty. The fan can defiantly make some noise, however is hardly on, if on at all. When you first power on the computer the fan spins up all the way and is pretty loud. I think you might run into a problem, because when you get the CPU just a little hot and the fan spins at a real low RPM it has a little tic (you can only hear it if you listen for it and the surrounding environment is not loud). I even exchanged my first one when I herd it because I thought the bearing was bad in my fan. I then found out that it is normal for a permanent magnet motor to click at low RPM's. I thought at first this would bug me, but with some use I saw that the laptop hardly ever powers the fan on.
Who knows, I might just be really picky, anyone else hear this noise?

on my S7010D the fan comes on whenever cpu usage is 80%. Even if it only jumps to 80% for 1 second the fan cranks up for 1-2 seconds and then slows back down. Only complaint is it woud wait a second or two but it doesn;t hapen often.
If you are processing video or audio where the system runs at 80% then perhaps it would be a problem. I would not consider this a desktop replacement so it is really not designed to be rendering or doing heavy processing for extended periods of time anyway. -
What kind of music work do you do?
How CPU intense is it?
The only time I have even heard the fan is when I ran Norton virus scan. I guess it also comes on for a second when powering up.

Thanks for the responses.
Right now, I'm a Mac user for music, using an ibook/900 MHz. But I can easily make the things slow to a crawl with the audio software I use, which judging by the builg in CPU meter can get to 75%. The fan in the iBook, normally off, kicks in after extended use.
By all accounts, the same processes would make a Centrino go to about 25% CPU, though hard drive activity is fairly intense.
The piece of software I use is Ableton Live (www.ableton.com). If anyone is interested you can download a free demo from the site. It is very very fun software.
You could also play around with the demo and let me know if the fan ever kicks in!
You would be a saint.

Hi.
I'm just wondering if anyone could add anything to the thread that was active a little while back.
Thanks,
Avi -
The fan is quiet and rarely on unless the machine is under load...what else do you need to know?

hey aviavi,
If you're already using an iBook, i'd say get a G4 Powerbook -- they don't have a fan at all. I don't know much about music, but Mac is industry standard for video work and most graphic designers use them as well. I think music is the same.

To Jadefish: Yes Macs are more standard, but they have fallen behind and for running newer audio programs and software synths, the difference between even the newest model powerbook and a mid-level Windows machine is often gaping. (See, for example, the forums for Ableton Live). Anyway, G4 powerbooks do have fans and can be a tad noisy, and generally come on when running audio applications. Too bad no windows machine comes close to looking as good, in my opinion anyway.
To Brian: I just wanted to see if anyone had any updated observations. I think, though, that I probably know all I need to. Just thought I'd make another stab at info before buying.
Thanks. -
huh, i had a 17" G4PB for 1.5 years (just sold to order a 6220) and always thought it didn't have a fan [
] Mine never made any noise other than HD and tended to get very warm. Maybe it was busted -- good thing i sold it [}

didn't know the performance gap was that big, either. in any case, i can't waaaaait to see my new baby....

Hi,
I brought my S6210 back to Fry's today. The fan is really loud and I just can't stand it. I saw two other guys return their s6210 while I was waiting. I asked them why they return it, same story "noise fans".
The loud fan noise whlie you turn on s6210 is just ok. It just couple seconds. But the small ticking sound really kill me. It sound like pin ball rolling inside my laptop and it never stop!
How loud is my S6210? While my air conditiioneris on,I can hear my S6210 ticking 10 feets away.
Sorry about my bad English.
How loud is S6210 fan?
