First, pardon my use or misuse of some of the terms, but I think you will get my meaning.

I am nearly sold on the Fujitsu S7010. Seems great in a lot of ways, but the integrated graphics issue keeps nagging at me. Frankly, I don’t know if I would notice the difference. I believe I understand the concept that the memory needs of the graphics card are taken from the system RAM. I guess this means less RAM for the rest of the computing needs, but seems like I can compensate by adding more RAM. What issue am I missing here?

I will not be gaming (at least I don’t now), but will certainly use it to watch DVDs in bed, and tweak the occasional photo in Photoshop. Will I appreciate the difference between dedicated and non-dedicated graphics RAM?

If you wait for the new line coming out in about a month, those will use the sonoma platform and hence the i915 chipset, which has better built in graphics, but don't expect something phenomenal or anything of that sort!
coriolis, no the difference between the intel extreme graphics 2 (the one found in the i855 chipset) and the x300 is pretty large.
But for gaming (at least a game that is remotely new) you would have to look at x600/9700 and above (I am mentioning ati chips cause they control the market now)
But to answer you question, for the needs that you described, built in is more than adequate, and only difference you will notice is the reduced system memory.
I somtimes tend to prefer dedicated over built in when I am using an external display, but I am too picky [ :D]!

In your case the dedicated video card wont really be needed.

Comparing Intel's Extreme Graphics, or any other onboard video that is 64mb, to any 64mb dedicated video, X300,etc. there is a slight difference.

But in your case you prolly wont need it.

So are current Fujitsu models direct 8.1 then? Or do you mean current are 9?

Integrated graphics is why I plan to get 768 meg ram instead of 512.
