Is the 40 GB 5400 RPM suitable for a college student using the computer (S6210) for email, internet, downloading music, instant messenger, office stuff, some photos, and watching DVDs?
Also- is 512 on the RAM suitable as well?

Yes 512mb ram if fine. You can always upgrade in the future if you want to.

With a 40gig harddrive, you will have about 30gigs usable one the operating system and some programs are loaded. If you get the forty gig hard drive, and find its too small, you could always upgrade to a bigger one when the time comes.

It also depends how long you plan to have this notebook before upgrading to a new one in the future.

If you're not going to put a ton of music or large files on it, the 40 is fine.

I'm receiving my laptop today in the mail *finally*.

I'm also going to college and using the laptop for the main purposes as you, and I got 60 gig 72k hard drive-- I have a 56k modem at home, but once I get to college I will definitely be downloading a lot more music with their ethernet. So I figured since I already have about 10 gig of music already, I will need 60 gigs, maybe even 80, for the next four years.

I also got 1 Gig RAM for the hell of it. The laptop is a present for the next four years, so I figured I better soup it up as much as possible in order to get the most out of it, and not feel like it's completely outdated in 2008.

Just watch out, right now, RIAA and MPAA are targetting college kids. And yes, chance of they caught on sharing music on campus is actually higher than downloading at home.
The good news is that the record industry are required(by law) to get supena from court, and they cannot go directly to your ISP(including your university), the downside is, because they have to work a lot harder to get to you, their settlement also higher. note that I use the words "sharing music" and not "downloading music", this is because, that's how they catch you, you will be a lot safer downloading and not sharing. And for some reason, I feel wardriving is the safest way to download music.[} :)]

What is wardriving? I will be going to UCF in the Fall- at orientation they told us that they would kick us off the network if we download music or look at porn, and that they can tell if we are doing this. That sounded pretty stiff. However, I talked to some kids and they said you'd be fine if you share minimally and not upload a bunch. Does anyone on here go to UCF? Can they really spot you out on porn through the network?

I don't go to UCF, but depending on how their server is setup, they can track not only whether you went to a porn site or not, but also what site you goes to at what time, who you IM with, every message you type and even a credit card number you use to sign up with that porn site. Hell, going to the girls dorm is probably safer. j/k[ :D]

Haha, man, so they have supreme access over everything it sounds like. They can seriously see every message you type on AIM and stuff?

I remember seeing a program you could download on TechTV that would make your IM's more secure. I dont remember anything else about it though.

you could use plugin, or 3rd party IM, like trillian. the problem w/ 3th party is that it required you to upgrade very often, hence every IM software keep changing their software to avoid compatibility w/ the 3rd party software[ :(!] WTF is wrong w/ all these people, can't we all just live together in harmony(btw I don't mean the REAL stuff). Also the encryption that you use also depend upon the people you chat w/ also, if they don't have the same plugin, it simply won't work.
