Whew! My Fujitsu Lifebook N3510 is acting up on me again. It refuses to go through POST when I switch it on. I don't see anything on screen anyway. I'm wondering whether the CMOS battery is dead or something. Can I replace it myself?

I don't believe that a dead CMOS battery prevent BIOS from completing its routine, and then booting into whatever OS you have.

CMOS is only really for storing system clock info. IF you cannot complete the POST properly. you might have a more serious problem. Is your primary partition OK?

Thanks for the response. But What will be the reason for it's refusal to load anything? When I switch it on, it just sits there. Nothing happens. I only see the LEDS. Thats all and a swirling sound. My warranty is dead and Fujitsu wants me to send it in for repairs. It's gonna cost like $550. I need help guys. Thanks.

Seems you're out of luck. Reseating RAM and processor would seem like your only remote chance on success.

I had a notebook do that exact thing in 2005.

I don't think there's much chance of fixing it easily, though. Since usually that indicates a motherboard problem.

My Lifebook s6120 did the exact same thing, no POST, no screen, nothing, just the fan going at full speed. I first thought that the BIOS was screwed up and needed resetting, and after taking it completely apart and un- and replugging the CMOS battery it woke up and worked just fine. But then the same thing happened after a couple of days, after being asleep off AC power for some hours. I put the plug in and after a couple of minutes it started up just fine. This has happened again a couple of times, so now I'm asking
    1. if someone knows if the CMOS battery can run out, and
    2. if it can be replaced?

    Thanks!

    1) Sure, it is a battery. It won't last forever.
    2) Yup.

To the OP. At the point where you have no warranty and it costs $550 to repair, I'd try replacing the CMOS battery, clearing the CMOS, even seeing if you can update the BIOS, or reinstall the BIOS. Also reseating things is a great idea as mentioned above. I'd try what you can first before sending it in.
