I've been searching for a good portable notebook PC for weeks putting off the purchase because I haven't found any that truly hit me. Some that I've considered are the Dell Inspiron 700m, Thinkpad X series and the Sony S580. Since I stumbled across the S6240 I think I just might have found what I'm lookng for. From what I see it's exactly the size I want and the possibility of having two batteries at the same time for all day computing is great (I had the same on my Thinkpad T42 which I've sold). It looks really nice in the photos with a display that is at least as nice as Sony's (I see a guy at Borders all the time who has a 17" Fujitsu notebook and the display is phenomenal). My one question, is it as strong and durable as a Thinkpad X series? If it is I think I'm sold.

I wouldn't consider it as strong and durable as IBM (Lenovo) notebooks but to compensate that, Fujitsu's screen (in my opinion) is far superior. I saw an S6240 at my University campus computer store and I'm amazed at its understated design. It's stylish in a professional manner (like a good looking man/woman in a business suit) ;-)
Maybe someone could confirm this, but I heard that there is a light leakage problem in the S7000 series. Does the S6000 have the same problem? The problem is most apparent when the screen is black. That might be something to consider before buying the Fujitsu. Nevertheless, the screen is still better than IBM. -
Fujitsus have the best glossy screens in my opinion, but I would still take the ThinkPad FlexView.

The Fujitsu S6240 is a great computer... build wise, probably not quite as sturdy as the IBM...but what is? It's a very well built machine though, that's for sure.
The glossy screen is superior to any other glossy screen out in the market though...even surpassing Sony, in my opinion. -
I've compared my friend's S6240 side by side to my personal S58GP(Asia ver of S580)
In no way is the fujitsu screen superior. And before u start, we were on even ground - full brightness. The fujitsu has a slight blue cast, whereas sony screen is a slightly warmer. Both tie here. However, the Sony is more contrasty than the Fujitsu and somehow it's somewhat sharper. Could be due to the graphic card though, but all things compared - the S580 is a better machine.
One thing I hate about the FUjitsu is the inconvenient wireless switch at the back. For most people who need wireless connection, having Sony where u can just switch it at the front is so much more convenient. I hate trying to reach my hands out trying to fiddle with that mini switch :/
Just take my post as a grain of salt.. do try both if u have the means to.
And abt the fujitsu screen - yes the higher end one 15" has v nice glossy screen, but so are the SOny A and FJ series. I have not compared these side by side but they should be equal or Sony might be better(based on the S580 vs S6240 comparison). Afterall let me ask u one question - how will a TV/LCD making companies have inferior screen to one who does not deal with screen panels? It doesn't quite make any sense. I even suspect the Fujitsu source their screen from toshiba or Sony or something..
and to ans ur queries.. I have seen many fujitsu laptop. They are built pretty solidly. Almost as solid as IBM. I believe many fujitsu users can testament to that -
I love my S6231- though I wouldn't consider it an overly sturdy machine.
I think the Thinkpads are stiffer than the Fujitsu, but all notebooks should be handled carefully. And a Panasonic Toughbook is as heavy duty as you can get. -
my girlfriend has a Sony Notebook, I have a N6210, the Sony screen is definitely not superior, the colors don't compare to the Fujitsu screen, it is much more vibrant and the brightness is the same. You definitely can't go wrong with a Fujitsu screen. and i think a very large majority of people on this site would agree

Can't say that I've seen a recent Sony display but I received my S6240 yesterday and the display is beautiful. The build is probably not quite as sturdy as a Thinkpad but it's pretty darn good. I was a little concerned at first because the fan seemed very loud while I was installing Linux but once the installation was complete and the CPU and fan controllers kicked in, you could barely hear the fan. I assume the controllers that come with M$ will do the same.

your model is a full desktop replacement 17" home media laptop, u would expect to have the best display fujitsu can have. Your girlfriend's need to be sony A series to compare, nothing less(xbrite dual lamp) for even ground comparison.
That is why I say fujitsu screen is overrated. Once u compare to the same class, same price difference .Obviously u can't compare to just any Sony screens. the smallish TX series has awful screen so is the Fujitsu P series comparatively to your series . heh -
The only Fujitsu notebook I've ever seen is the 17" I mentioned at Borders. The display is so amazingly bright and sharp, nicer than the Sony displays I've seen which I thought were the best available. I've seen the display on the Vaio FS series which is also great, just not quite as great as the Fujitsu.

i have seen the A series in person next to mine, it is very good as well, very brite but the colors weren't quite as groovy as mine
you really can't go wrong with sony or fujitsu screens thought you just can't

But hey at least u've made an even ground comparison and conclude.. that's good. Many people do not know the model difference and just lambast the other makers' screen
cheers man
Is the S6240 as good as it looks?
