I was really excited about this new notebook and installing my new Mtron Mobi 3000 SSD in it. The notebook set me back $18,800 HKD in Hong-Kong with 3Gb of RAM  Not a cheap laptop. After buying it I pretty much regret buying this laptop. As they opened up the laptop to install the new Mtron SSD flash in it I noticed that the majority of the components inside were made every where but Japan  The Battery was made in Taiwan, The wifi was made in China, the HDD was made in Thailand by Hitachi where before the whole laptop was made in Japan using Fujitsu's own components. What I have now bought was a Japanese laptop with sourced components from other manufacturers in Asia.

After nearly removing everything from the Windows Start panel I got it to turn on in around 40 seconds which pretty mush left me unhappy. The new Thinpad X300 was doing it in around 30 seconds or so with the basic items in the start panel and it uses a slower 64gb Flash SSD. The speakers on this notebook leave a lot to be desired and the case also feels flimsy or not so solid. The screen is nice but that is about the only thing nice about it:cry:

After buying it I ge to the airport on my way back to Taiwan and start up my laptop to try out the wifi at the airport only to hear a weird and strange sound coming from the rear of the computer. I looked more carefully into the sound and it sounded like I had a defected fan or a fan about to go bad  :mad2: I called them back up and told them what was happening. They have a 7 day exchange policy and 2 days had already gone by as I was all ready to board my plane back to Taiwan. He said he would exchange the laptop for me 10 days later when I returned. Will see how it goes from there..

Today I turned on my laptop at home to see if the sound had gone and sure enough it was still there  :realmad:

This was one of my worst new laptop purchases ever considering the amount of money I spent on it. My Macbook that I had bought 2 months ago was a much better buy :)

The Battery is huge so the computer is not so balanced if you are carrying it. The back side will weigh a lot more then the front half of the laptop. If you replace the stock HDD with a flash SSD from Mtron like I did you will notice a huge difference in balance for weight between teh front and the back

The battery life has really surprised me. With a huge battery, low voltage CPU, small LED Screen and a Mtron Flash SSD using less power then the factory 5400 RPM HDD this computer barely manages over 2.5 hours of battery life :(

When you turn on the wifi button the Bluetooth also comes on. Basically the Bluetooth Button works with the Wifi button so if you need one then you have to use both  My older Fujitsu P7010 Lifebook had better battery life and better speaker quality then this laptop. That laptop also had a LED Screen. The older laptop had a SD card reader, Compact Flash card reader and a PCMCIA card reader. So here we lost the Compact Flash Card reader and got worse speakers but got a larger screen in return.

I stopped by the local Fujitsu dealer here in taipei today to look at all the other new laptops and compare fan noises. I picked up many newer released models to see if they had the same problem with noise. Pretty much all the new notebooks had this fan noise problem. I think Fujitsu bought some faulty fans from some maufacturer (Probably China). I wonder when they will announce a recall for these bloody fans that they put in their recent new notebooks.

I tried out my notebook last night and that fan noise sure got to me. Not only that but the fan never seemed to stop. I wasn't running any major 3D applications or anything and the Fujitsu now has a SSD Flas drive in it so I see no reason why that fan had to remain on as the laptop was running cool now.

Wow, it looks like you aren't happy at all. That's US $2413. A lot of money, plus the SSD. Enough to buy an X300 with the SSD.

Tell us more about the build quality, is it really that flimsy? Does it get hot?

The Keyboard has quite a bit of flex to it so it is not solid. The battery in the back is not that solid either as it seems to move around a bit as well. The computer does not heat up at all. Runs very cool. If you are in a noisy area then you won't have to worry about the squeaks coming from the fan like a fan that needs oil or something

Computer runs good but not worth the money spent on it. An Acer 2920 with the new Penryn 2.5 and 6mb of cache would have been much better. The acer is better built then this Fujitsu. The fujitsu probably looks a bit better then the Acer but if I were to buy a new computer again I would eithe rget the Asus or Acer as both are cheaper and better built then the new Fujitsu.

I'm in Dubai this week and noticed the the Fujitsu-Siemens laptops here were built better then the one I got  I guess the Germans keep an eye out for quality
