So, I just got this notebook from Newegg. It's really sleek and polished looking. I'm not very happy with the HDD that came with this notebook. It's 160gb 5400rpm by Western Digital which are junk.

I want to swap to a SSD. Is this a direct plug and play? I'm assuming that it would be a 2.5" form factor but I'm confused on whether its SATA II or SATA III. Fujitsu offers SSD on the P771 but only for custom built systems.

The Fujitsu Canada website only lists the hard drives as SATA. It does not say which version.

NCIX's website (a Canadian vendor) lists them as SATA1 150Mbps.

In any case, SATAII and SATAIII devices should be backward compatible.

A question about your new toy - how it the keyboard? I have the P770, and the keyboard is springy in the middle, flexes more than it should. Is yours the same?

FYI - I am currently running mine with a WD Black 750Gb 7200rpm drive, and that is nice. I am considering getting a 256Gb SSD, using it for the boot device, and using the 750Gb drive as a second drive. This is possible since I removed the optical drive and replaced it with a hard drive holder. This was used with a 750Gb 5400 drive for a while, giving the little laptop an installed drive capacity of 1.5Tb. Neat, and really good for bragging rights! :)

Also - I have a Sony A55 camera. On the weekend, I capture a video with it, in 1080p resolution. Tried to play it on my P770, and it will not play smoothly. That surprised me, since I have watch hidef 720p movies many times without issue.

The keyboard doesn't flex at all. This is my first Fujitsu and I'm impressed so far. I just wished it had a faster and better quality HDD. It's also unfortunate that it shipped with 32 bit Windows 7. I'll have to buy 64 bit if I want to go to 8gb of RAM.

The cheapest way to get Win7 is to join Microsoft's Technet. It is a yearly subscription, but it gives you access to almost all of Microsoft's PC software.

Glad to hear they made the unit more solid!

There's no need to buy Windows 7 x64. You can download a Windows 7 x64 disc in the Windows forum. Your COA key will work for either the x86 or x64 version. I have done this myself on my X220i. It worked like a charm.

I'm glad that you're really happy with your notebook Marukai. I read your post previously in the Sony forum about this.

You could look in the device manager to ascertain what HD you have. The chipset that they are using supports SATA III, but of course SATA II drives can also be used.

It's very easy to remove the HDD in the P771 so can remove it and take a look at the connectors if you have any doubts.

I'm totally stoked now after installing the new Samsung 830 SSD. I got the 128gb model. I know some are skeptical about this SSD because it's unlike any other SSD on the market. It uses an entirely different proprietary controller. My system now boots 16 seconds. I'm going to search Newegg for a RAM deal. This will be my new powerhouse toy :D

The only cons that I have about this system is the screen. I've been spoiled by the crisp Sony screens on my TZ and SR notebook. The Fujitsu is noticeably inferior.

Thanks so much for this info! I burned an ISO DVD and did a clean install of W7 Pro 64bit. I used the 32bit license code on the bottom of my notebook without any problems. I now just need to get a quality 8gb RAM kit

It is matte a real matte display as opposed to a duraview, sometimes for some people it can take some time to get used to or they may prefer glossy displays. I was pleased with the screen quality of the P770 but then i have a preference for matte displays. Hopefully the P771 display is not any worse than the P770 display.

I did a clean install and downloaded and used the Fujitsu ICC (International Color Consortium)-Profile and it seemed to make a difference. You might want to try to calibrate the display.
