I just got my S6210, it looks real good, but it was sent with the wrong memory configuration (came with 2x256 instead of 1x512). Anyways, I called P1 and they are going to send the 512 out today. A few questions:
    (1) Do any programs come installed and take up some of the memory it currently has?
    (2) If it does take up some of the current memory, which I am going to send back to P1 (both sticks of 256), what should I do about getting the already installed programs onto the new stick of 512?
    (3) When I take out the 2 sticks of 256 RAM and put in the 1 stick of 512, is there a certain slot of the two available that you should put the 1 stick in, like if you aren't going to have two sticks (however I plan on ordering another stick of 512 from Crucial pretty soon to put the notebook at 1 Gig)?
    (4) Should I wait til the 512 stick comes and I put that in the computer before I do anything on the system? *Note* I turned the notebook on when I got it and went through a couple screens with the XP Home thing and then it signed on or whatever and put me on the desktop- I don't know if that ruined my only chance for the initial XP Home start up. When I replace the two current stick with the 512, will it go back to the XP Home initialization thing?
    (5) Can someone give me a link to the "Things you should do once your laptop arrives" post, or something like that? Thanks
    (6) Is the Norton AV installed on the S6210 from P1 just a trial version? of how long? And, should I get rid of this and get another AV program instead? Which one is the best and where do you get it?

    Thanks

You may want to uninstall norton antivirus, as it can be a resource hog.

RAM does not permanantly hold data. The installed programs are on the harddrive, not the RAM. You just take out the old ram and put in the new and youre ready to go.

Try it in one of the slots, and if it doesnt work, then try it in the other slot. I think it will work in either slot though.

Again, all of your programs and settings are on the harddrive, not the RAM. The RAM does not save any of your data. No it will not go back to the xp home installation thing. Feel free to use the laptop as much as you want until the 512 stick comes, as it will not affect anything.

I think norton is a 90 day trial. I use AVG anti virus free edition, and it works great. If you want a good free firewall, I suggest you use sygate.

    Any more questions?

Ok, thanks. Now, what does the RAM actually do/store? I currently have McAffee (free year trial) on my desktop PC and it works great. I also run Spybot and Pop-up blocker, which are free. Where do you get AVG and is it as good as McAffee would be? Also, what does a firewall do?

unless it's a corporate edition, then you wants to keep it. If you doesn't know what it's, then you don't have it, uninstall it.

Simply put RAM is the amount of memory available to your computer to run programs. Some programs like Word do not require a lot of RAM; others like Photoshop require more.

If you want to run multiple programs at one time then you obviously will use more RAM. The more RAM you have the better your computer will perform when you run multiple programs or programs that require a lot of memory.

This is why, in the other thread, it was suggested that you upgrade the RAM as opposed to upgrading the processor.

Here is a more in depth description of RAM: RAM Guide

Here is AVG anti virus free edition:
    http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

    It works great for me.

A firewall prevents unwanted intrusions from the internet.
    Sygate firewall (free):

How does the AVG compare to McAffee? What is Panda Antivirus? Is that free/good? Does AVG stay on the desktop like McAffee or Norton would?

Never used mcaffee. I like AVG better than norton. AVG sits in the system tray. There are free updates, and it has an email scanner. Panda might be free for one year, but Im not sure.

Ok, thanks a lot, I'll stack up the AVG and Sygate :) What is AdAware? Is it the same kind of thing as Spybot? Also, how do you get the Norton trial off of the S6210?

Spyware is junk software that comes bundled with other software you download.

Yeah, Adaware is the same kind of thing as spybot. I use both.

To get rid of Norton, go to "Start" then "Control Panel" then "Add or Remove Programs" then find Norton on the list and click "Change/Remove" and it will be uninstalled.

    Anything else?

Or maybe because I patched my dream w/ Service Pack2 and that's why it doesn't work.
