Yep, I should have it in the next week or two. My P5020D is just so old, I've had it for 6 months, LOL. Anyway, I'm really excited about the upgrades and hope I don't hate the CV screen. I ordered it with the 7k60GB drive and 512 RAM on a single chip. I plan on adding another 512 later. I'll take some side-by-sdie pics when it arrives and post a review.

oh, EBay is the way to go for people that can't stand to hold onto technology for more than 6 months...or less [
]
Either that or setup your own used electronics store to fund the purchase of new electronics. -
Yeah, you dont wanna hang on to a laptop for too long...[
].
How can you afford to buy a new laptop so often?
Do you sell your old one on ebay?
What percent of the price you paid do you get back?
So the new machine will have the CV screen and the 7200rpm HDD...what else is different?

Yeah, we'll punt this one on eBay. I suspect we'll end up with a loss of only a few hundred dollars.
Aside from the CV screen, there is the addition of a fingerprint reader, black case, added RAM slot, half a pound lighter, moved CD drive to the other side, supports DVD burner option and gets a slightly faster PM 1.1. I'm sure I'm missing something, but those are the highlights.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
I saw that on both website, just tryout the configuration, similar to my S6210, but w/o the DVD burner, cuz P7K doesn't have one, and still $300 more. Ouch, stylish cost a lot of money.

That fingerprint reader sounds nice. Do you think you will buy Fujitsu for the rest of your life (assuming they keep up the good work)?

LOL. Yep, I'll be with Fujitsu until there's something better to jump to. At this point I don't feel Sony or Panasonic offer anything as good, for the price.

Dumb question of the day... what does the 'D' signify on Fujitsu models. i.e. what is the difference between the S7000 and the S7000D?
-
Not dumb at all. You'll find that very few resellers do a very good job of labelling their machines...Dell's probably the best. IBM isn't bad. Anyway, the D means they used a non-Intel wireless card. Before Intel supported g, that was the only way to get b and g. Now it means you get abg where the Intel card is only bg.

Cant wait to see the review brian, i am very intersted in the p7000. For the past month or so I was almost set on purchasing an ASUS S5NE, due to its ultraportability and 'fashion.' Although the battery life seems to lack on the S5NE, it looks to overall be a great notebook, and for the price, its a great deal(have you seen all the extras you get, including the 2 notebook cases).
Nevertheless, the p7000 looks amazing. I noticed on the main website that it was going for the price of 1500$ or so. However when i checked fujitsu's website, i realized that even the basic configurations were going for 1700$+
How much did your final configuration cost you, im hoping it was under $2000. Thanks -
Be sure to check www.laptopsinc.com for the best price. I ended up with a nice config, but it will cost over $2k.

Brian, will you be able to compare the p7010d with the asus s5ne, i thnk i remember there being a s5ne review on bargainpda.com, but im not sure. I know the s5ne is signifigantly cheaper, so i cant wait to hear the p7000's review
-
I won't be. While I've seen the Asus, I didn't seriously consider it because the specs didn't align with what I wanted.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
The p7000 is slightly smaller than the s5ne as well right? I think i remember the dimensions smaller aside from width?

Alright, I'm taking the plunge and ordering today. Going for the 7000D with 80gb, 512mb, and the finger print sensor. I really wanted to pick up the Sony U70, but this machine has so much more potential. Can't wait for that super multi-drive either!!!!
Afterthought: Really a question, does anyone know if the 7000 series is using the Dothan processors?? -
Nope, it's Banias. Intel just announced the low voltage Dothans this week.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
Is the 7K60 drive a fujitsu option or only available from laptops inc? I didn't see anywhere on fujitsu's site specs of the drive options.
Thanks! -
Only from resellers.

This wait is killing me. I have an expected ship by date of 7/29 and no patience. Even went so far as to call Fujitsu b/c on their site, they mention some orders can be expedited. Well, my silly behind just had to customize the machine so it's coming directly from Japan and in that scenario, no expedite is possible........ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH. The one good thing is that I found out I should have it two business days later which is a HUGE relief. I'm leaving for vacation that following week, but not until Thursday. So that'll give me time to drive over to FedEx or whoever and pick it up.The 5+ hour plane ride to San Diego will give me PLENTY of time to evaulate this machine. But the wait..................
-
Hey Brian, how are we liking the p7 so far? Any forewarnings before some us enter ultralight bliss?? Mine finally shipped out, but of course they don't keep track of tracking numbers. Once I get the InfoNotice, I'm going to use UPS's redirect service to have them deliver it to my office.......such a pain. Next time, I'm ordering from Portable One...I hate waiting and they had better upgrades!!
-
Love it...just talked someone else into one and his showed up today. You'll feel so strong toting it about.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
i just got my p7010d and have been pretty happy with it overall, especially when i get jealous looks from other big haulers in wireless coffeeshops...
anyway, just noticed today that i have 3 marks on the top along the rim from when i close the laptop and the top touches the 2 click buttons/fingerprint sensor. i don't have much hope for getting rid of the marks (even though it's about a week old). anyone else have any ideas/similar experiences? -
Yeah, I also have some marks along the top rim, above the LCD panel. These particular marks I haven't been able to get rid of, only soften a little. I usually keep a microfiber cloth between the keyboard and screen to help prevent scratching. I suspect the marks occured during one of the times I forgot the cloth.
-
You guys talking about the plastic above the display? I don't have that, I'm still using the pink styro as a buffer though. I thought about stopping that, but not after your feedback.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
I just received my P7010 and my initial reaction is very positive. However, I cannot seem to find the Power Panel that is supplied as part of the Intel Pentium M. On my other laptops, the Power Panel control panel enables me to select between Adaptive or Performance CPU processing, as well as fan speed settings, etc. So, what am I missing here that I cannot locate it in the control panel?
Also, can anyone tell me if the various drives affect how often the fan will spin? I went with the upgraded 80gb drive from P1, not the Fujitsu brand though.
Thanks,
Deron -
I don't know about adaptive, mine always runs at the same speed when on AC or battery, unless I manually override with something like SpeedSwitchXP.
As for clicking, I don't get any, so not sure what you're referring to. Loud clicking generally is not good though.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
Are you sure that's not a Centrino thing? I've never seen that on my Fujitu's, so they either don't install it by default or it's only available with Centrino.
As for heat, a faster drive will generally create more heat, but only marginally so.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
Hmmm, maybe it is a Centrino thing. I forgot my machine is technically not a Centrino since it has the Atheros Wi-fi. But, the ability to change from adaptive to performance CPU was huge because it saved battery power when you didn't need it, but could command full time processor speed otherwise. Does this mean the P7010D runs on adaptive CPU at all times, in which the processor speed automatically changes?
Also, anything that can be done to prevent a hard drive from "clicking" every few seconds even when not running any programs on the machine?
Thanks much. -
I'd love to try this form factor, but I'm concerned that my 40ish year old eyes won't like the small type. Can you guys read for a couple of hours on the display without any eye fatigue? Are any of you 40+?
What about noise? I heard somewhere that the fan is a bit noisy. -
The fan is not noisy. As for the display, it's very clear, but the text is small. If you have eye issues, it's probably not a good fit. Portable One has a 30 day return policy, so you could try it out and see if you like it. Fujitsu has a 15 day.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
Max,
I have been using my P7010D for the past four days, at least 8 hours per day, and have had no problems with eye fatigue. I am, however, only 32 years old.
As for fan noise, it is a factor in a quiet room, but not nearly as loud as other units I've tried. In fact, I ended up with the P7010D because I returned my Vaio S260 due to the fan being too loud. It's not as bad with this unit, especially when using it on battery.
I still, however, would like to know how to change the processor speed, which is easily done on Centrinos (see my earlier post).

Are you sure about the PortablOne return policy? I checked their site for the policy, but the only policy I see is a 30 Day DOA policy.

That's what it was last time I ordered. If I were them I wouldn't advertise it either. Give a call and ask Ivan about it. Feel free to reference this site, we send a lot of buyers his way.

So, when are we going to see a review. I can't wait to see it! I am thinking about getting one but, the screen is so small. That is the only problem that I worry about. How is the screen on yours?
Windows - The operating system that runs the world.
Toshiba - Quality, price, and features! -
The screen is phonominal. I posted a comparison with the P5 back when I bought this.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
The screen is indeed small, but resolution is very sharp.
When I first got the laptop, I feared it would be a problem because my eyes were hurting after about one hour of reading text on the screen. But I easily fixed that by adjusting the default font size, both on Windows and my browser. That solved the problem and I love the machine now. The biometric security is a cool touch.
Deron -
brian, do you have any comments on how this compares to the sony tr3a? i'm still in the middle of trying to get an S series but these subnotebooks really appeal to me.
-
My lord, I would never buy the TR3. Aside from being old, Sony uses non-standard everything, making it hard and expensive to service. Even the HDD is non-standard. They are also expensive and offer inferior build quality and support.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
Hi Brian -
Just read through this thread.
Do you have any plans to include a more comprehensive review of the P7000 series on NotebookReview.com?
Personally, I would love to have an in-depth write up, complete with lotsa photos!
Thanks! -
I think I procrastinated too long...I'll hit the next one when it comes out.
Editor in Chief http://www.bargainPDA.com and http://www.SPOTstop.com -
That's cool.
I'm HOPING that our local Frys has these in the store. I'm gonna go check it out this afternoon just for fun. MAYBE it will seem too small (which seems to be the #1 complaint about these babies!).
One thing that I find pretty amazing about the system is that on cnet there are ZERO negative user comments - it is 100% positive. (well, people have their complaints, but there have been ZERO thumbs-down selections).
So having 100% positive feedback is fairly remarkable, wouldn't you say? -
Absolutely. It's a phenominal machine if you ask me. The ONLY complaint I have is no integrated Bluetooth.
