    I've got a 1.6GHz Pentium-M E4010D (which I think is basically the same as the C Series C1110D - but I could be wrong).

I believe that the Lifebook is overheating in that it displays the typical characteristics of an overheating laptop - XP locking up (nothing happens - not even the mouse pointer, can't reboot, etc.) and random shutting down.

When I boot the laptop, I can hear the CPU heatsink fan starting up but it stops straight after the BIOS screen and does not swicth on again (until the next restart/boot). After opening the E4010D, I confirmed that the does not even run at low speed after the initial boot. Therefore, I think this is the problem of the overheating issue.

Obviously I appreciate that having the fan on all the time can be a bit distracting/annoying but for me I've much prefer that than the laptop locking up/shutting down. So, does anyone who if there's a way to set the fan to be permanently running? Perhaps, some BIOS hack, physically wiring it elsewhere internally, software running in XP (can't really work out if SpeedFan could do this).

On the other hand, a permanent solution would be more preferable (i.e. fix the problem rather than going around it). Any advice, could it be the:

    Heatsink unit

    replace with one off Ebay
    CPU

I believe that the Pentium-M has an inbuilt thermal sensor, could this be faulty
    Motherboard

I do hope that this isn't the problem due to it (I guess) being a proprietary Fujitsu item and so my only hope would be to find a working one on Ebay (if so, I wouldn't expect it to be cheap) or a 'Spares/Repair' laptop on Ebay with a fully functional motherboard/mainboard/systemboard (you know, the ones with a busted screen, missing HD and the like but otherwise serviceable).

Obviously, any advice/help would be most appreciated.

    Thannks

Apologies for some of the poor typing there ^^^

I have tried unplugging the fan (not sure what I thought it'd solve) and got the thermal error thing at BIOS booting stage.

I have tried cleaning the fan, cleaning the sink fins, WD40'ing the fan....all to no avail.

I Own A T4020d, and i had similar problems. my solution was a toggle switch mounted on the rear of the case, so that i could turn the fan on and off as needed. Then Mounted a thermometer probe on the heat sync. with a wireless lcd screen. (which i velcro'ed on the back of the lid.
The Downfall was that it was either full speed, or no speed. it serves it's purpose though
