The laptop is 2 and a half years old. Recently the following thing started happening.

When I power up the laptop I get a black screen or I see the initial screen with the hardware listing, but then the screen goes black and I see nothing. The system is apparently still booting since the hard drive is working and I have to press and hold the on/off button to turn it off.

After 2-3 attempts is gives me the warning message that Windows didn't start normally (safe mode, start normally etc). When I "start normally" the windows loads and I don't have any further problems.

Could this be a software issue, BIOS or is the screen dying out on me?

if you have an external monitor, i would suggest plugging it up your notebook. if you can see images on your external monitor, it means that there is something wrong with your lcd. if there is nothing on your external monitor, it might be indicative that something is wrong with your video card. since it is integrated, it may mean you need to replace your motherboard.

it doesn't really seem like a software issue.

My guess is the inverter for the backlight. The sick ones sometime run for a shortwhile when you boot but then go off.

Is the screen completely blank or can you see faint images?

The error messages on boot-up are because you did not shut down properly.

If the computer boots up (i.e. if I see it booting) then there are no problems whatsoever, even if I leave it running for a day or two. Its only when I'm turning it on that I either get a blank screen or I just see the hardware list for a second before it turns blank (and stays blank).

I'll try out the external monitor once I get my hands on one (shouldn't be hard)

I read about inverters, but, as you suggested John, but it puzzled me that its either completely blank or fully functional..
