just wanted to let the group know about the q2010 in case you were considering it.

after owning it for a few days my first impressions are generally positive but it's far from a perfect laptop. the primary reason i bought this computer (and i'm assuming most everyone else who is or is thinking about it) is the weight. i really don't get how others play up the "executive jewelry" angle other than cost. it's not an unattractive piece of hardware but i wouldn't call it extraordinary in any sense of the word. sure, it's thin and thin is always in but imo these line items speak against it being a boutique product:

    - the screen is 12.1 inches which is fine but the actual physical dimensions of the top lid could easily have accommodated a 13.3 or perhaps even a 14.1 lcd. instead, the 12.1 looks too much like a picture in a frame with overly wide "margins" that don't serve any purpose and are a minus on the aesthetics column.

    - the screen itself has a very small sweet spot area. unless viewed dead on whether horizontally or vertically the colors look too bright and washed out. when i first turned it on i fumbled to look for a contrast setting that does not exist.

    - the material of the whole unit is your standard dark gray plastic. i would expect the rolls royce of laptops to have been made from higher grade stuff. the panel hinges are supposedly from titanium - why didn't they go the extra step and really stand out by making the whole thing out of titanium? sure, it might have added a few bucks to the cost of the materials and machining but anyone who can spend three grand on a laptop with mediocre technical specs would likely spring for another couple hundred for this. wouldn't you?

    - the much-touted piano lacquer finish and wwan available in the european models were dropped from the u.s. version. smells like we get sloppy seconds. there is instead a cheap-looking plastic insert at the top of the screen and if you really want wwan you can use the solitary pc card slot like all other laptops.

    - the keyboard stinks. the keys are too small and, worse, too stiff making for tired fingers and an annoyingly loud clickety-click. this might just be a personal preference thing as i loved the much-maligned keyboard of the sony sz series which this q2010 replaces.

    - more ragging on the keyboard: the power button has a classy touch by being backlit with a white led. why couldn't they have made the entire keyboard backlit thus enabling one to be able to use it and type in the dark? there are four proprietary keys to the left meant to be add-ons in case your twelve standard function keys are not enough. considering for a moment their dubious value the fact remains that had they simply been arranged to the top of the keyboard area which sports a non-functional grille (only a tiny percentage of which covers the two tiny speakers) we would be left with a full-sized keboard. the touchpad can't be used afaik to scroll up and down the screen by dragging on the right hand side. the "mouse" buttons under the touchpad are too small.

other things i don't like but which the ceo-level segment which supposedly this laptop is marketed to probably doesn't care about:

    - use of a slooooow 4,200rpm 1.8 inch drive. i'm not sure i can blame fujitsu for this as it may have more to do with space requirements than the extra ounce it would have save had they opted for a standard 2.5 drive. happily, when higher rpm 1.8 drives come out i can replace it.

    - the ram is soldered on board. how lame. can't upgrade. good thing i chose the 1 gig model which is merely serviceable imo.

with all the above you might think i'm really down on the laptop. i'm not. i needed the lightest laptop out there that was still a true, functional computer. twelve inches and 1280x800 was the lowest i was comfortable working on and this fujitsu is the only one on the market with those specs. the gateway nx100x is just as lame tech-spec wise and is heavier by a pound while the sz is much better all around but is twice the weight and feels cheap. other models sacrificed either the screen size or had some other deal breaker.

also, reviewers are negative about the lack of an integrated burner. i think it's a fair trade off for something you don't use that much once all your apps are installed. i bought a usb external for $65 from newegg for that purpose and the dvd's i watch are the kind i download from emule ;-)

I bought a q2010 for basically the same reason...I wanted something to take with me every day, so I wanted the lightest 12" I could find...the x60s is nice too, bit I wanted a wide screen and a touch pad. The Panasonic ?5 series notebooks are coming to the US soon, and I might have bought one of them instead if they had been available at the time.

I got the low end model with 512MB, on sale, and my original plan was to replace the hard disk with a larger one sometime down the road.

I'm happy with the q2010 for my purposes, the price is a little too high, but what the heck, I still bought it anyway....

You're sure it's plastic? Fujitsu claims an all magnesium alloy build.

Personally, I'm more attracted to the matte black than the high gloss piano black laquer.

my bad, maybe i'm wrong and it is in fact a mag alloy. still LOOKS plastic imo but i'm happier to know it's not something that might break if i look at it the wrong way. like you, i care less about the piano finish except to note that fujitsu has evidently chosen to cut corners on what is essentially a designer item. so my qualm is more of the sort "why not get off the fence and either make something fully practical or go for broke and make a laptop that will be a to-drool-for flagship?" that the company has arbitrarily nixed the high end finish and wwan from its european counterpart is a head scratcher to me. to on top of that put in a cheapie plastic black strip to simulate what it took out in the first place smells like sloppy seconds and a gratuitous insult.

but me, personally, yeah.... don't much care for the wow factor of the piano lid considering that 99.9% of the time the machine is going to be out of public view anyway. now if it were to attract an impressionable chick.... hmmmm... :)

ps. i would have gone for the lenovo if it wasn't for that 1024x768 native res.

I agree, it's unfortunate that they don't offer wwan. I can see why they didn't include wwan standard, because there are two competing standards in the states. Still though, they should have offered the upgrade to either of the two standards. Personally I wouldn't get it, so I'm kind of glad I won't have to pay for it if I go for the Q.

Regarding piano black finishes, they're so easy to scratch. I wouldn't even consider the notebook if it had the lacquer. I think the size is what makes it the chief exec candy that it is.

But everyone's opinions are different, that's the joy of life.

There is a cover on the bottom that exposes an open mini pci express slot, which would be be good for a wwan upgrade....
